  1. Looking good Jeremy! Not sure if that should be considered supplementing T5 with LED or supplementing LED with T5 but nice either way!
  2. Ouch! Remind me not to get on your bad side my man! It was pretty funny though.... (sorry Jorge).
  3. That is probably a smart move. Especially if you don't know if your unit is effective for chloramine as well as chlorine. Different water providers use different sterilizing chemicals and not all filters are effective at removing both (used to have to specify chloramine capable cartridges when replacing). I think there are some folk on here that discovered this the hard way when chloramine started being used more broadly (insert sad face here).
  4. Ah, but this begs the question of polyp density vs. branching. I will have to check out the article when I get a chance but I get the impression that this stuff is not highly studied from a scientific perspective. Your comparison to plant biology begs the question - are there growth hormone equivalents in coral? Interestingly, there is a tradition of using growth hormone in the food mix "Pappone" that is part of the "Blu Coral" method but the popular interpretation of that seems to be that is broken down into amino acids that are utilized by the coral (has to be a cheaper way to achieve that!). Anyway, lots of odd anecdotal stuff out there but I haven't spent the time to dive into the actual scientific literature (or what there is of it). Homework Brian or Andy!
  5. Interesting question. From a purely observational perspective I would say yes - at least in some form but I haven't looked for a reference for this. As to how/why I would love to know if someone has studied this. I have noticed that mild iritation seems to prompt branching, at least on some corals - perhaps by inducing micro abrasion stimulated repair of some sort - so I could see how this might be one response. Also wonder if there is some stimulus that prompts a radial coralite to convert to an axial one (like apical meristem in plants?) - which could also produce branching. As far as branch thickness, lobular growth vs branching and all the other variations... haven't a clue. Anyone read up on this? Does seem like a fascinating topic (for those with the geek gene anyway).
  6. Welcome! Glad you are finding the site helpful. Lots of wisdom (and wise cracks) floating around in these threads so they are a great resource as you come across questions. I noticed you are another reefer from the Keizer area... seems to be a popular location these days so you should have some local expertise at hand as well. Good luck with the new tank!
  7. Making a mental note of this for emergency purposes
  8. You will find plenty of folk on here willing to take nice acros from you... for scientific purposes of course
  9. This seems like a neat trick - hadn't thought of it before.
  10. That is what I was going to guess but didn't want to ruin your fun
  11. Haha! Yeah, I can relate... Darcy knows when I get that look in my eye it's best to just steer clear and wait for the dust to settle. She's learned not to start me on a project unless she is willing to write off the whole day because once I get started, I pretty much can't put it down I am trying to retrain myself with the tank (since there is always "something" I could be doing) but it's hard. Anyway... her efforts seem to be paying off nicely so kudos to Sirena
  12. I would likewise be suspicious of flow. If you start poking around at images online, you can see some pretty significant differences in structure based on localized conditions so I would not view your growth patterns as anything outside the normal boundaries or indicative of anything wrong. They do look really healthy!
  13. So cool! Love both of those fish so it's particularly neat to see them together. Tank is looking great!
  14. Haha... sorry, guess I forgot to warn you about that part. Darcy usually clears out of the kitchen when I go to dump mine. Also try to avoid doing it near mealtime... for obvious reasons ?
  15. Thanks! I will check the tank out tonight and see if it will work where I am thinking...
  16. Hey Ninja - I am curious about that green/purple monti on the magnetic frag disk. What are approximate dimensions on that? BTW - your euphyillia specimens look fantastic. Clearly they are very happy in your tank!
  17. I was going to suggest that but you got there first. I have had pretty good luck getting random plumbing related parts from them. Seems like Woody kept a good amount of stock from the old operation - which is good for the "need it now" types like me.
  18. Always could use more room right? Saw this tank and it seems like it is in nice shape and has somewhat unique dimensions - which is kind of cool.
  19. Thanks! Yeah - it's the training them to fed at a convenient time that I struggled with but I have a feeling you and Sirena may be more patient than I. Good tips BTW!
  20. At least I would get to admire it for a while. Glad that worked out for you and Sirena was able to get her baby seahorse tanks ready. Sounds like we may have lots of them being raised around here soon between Bret, Andy and you. Hopefully Fred and Ginger cooperate ? Maybe the new suncoral will help put them in the mood!
  21. Yeah - he couldn't resist taunting me a bit with his new score but I still have that Tierra del Feugo here so he better be careful. What is that saying... possession is 9/10ths or something like that ? Speaking of which, that guy has grown since I brought him home!
  22. You scored some awesome pieces there Sirena! I didn't realize you snagged that suncoral - very nice. Glad to hear you have them eating. I will need to ask Cherany what her trick is. Also glad to see Cindy Lou is out and about enjoying her new digs. Such a beautiful fish. Can't wait to see the seahorse tank in all its glory! BTW - tell Kim i heard what she traded for those tanks and yes, I do have some monti envy!
  23. This is a cool little setup! What kind of light is that?
  24. Well deserved praise! Now that I have seen this on a full sized screen (instead of my dinky phone) it's even more impressive. Really spectacular sir!
  25. Sorry to hear you had that happen Jeremy but it does sort of prove the point that this can be a concern for anyone thinking about a peristaltic solution. I used to hate when I would come to work in the morning and find an overnight column run wrecked by a leaking piece of flex tubing! Weeks worth of work down the drain... or, in your case, lots of salt water on your floor! Would also be curious about the noise.
