  1. Lots of positive trials of this stuff. I'm hoping that you see success with minimal effects. If so, we can all cross a super annoying algae off the list of 'reasons to break tank with bat.' I've got two tiny spots in my 180 and I've been hitting them each morning with a little H202. One is gone but the other remains. It's maybe a centimeter worth... I might just drop a bunch of super glue on it and call it even. But I'm trying to be super aggressive.
  2. Looks awesome. Two different light set ups is gonna be interesting. Put some of the same stuff in both to see the difference.
  3. Yeah And think about how much you like the Xenia. You're about to have a ton of it. If you don't want a ton of it then you might want to remove it.
  4. I'm no expert but you gotta think the vibrant could be causing an issue.
  5. ^^^Bingo bango - that has all the markings of a velvet outbreak. New fish, heavy breathing, dead in a few days. You don't have to see spots with velvet, as it works a number on the gills before it even needs to move on. Fallow is your only choice. Don't try to half step this one - just leave it be...feed the corals or drop food in a few times a week to keep your bacteria alive and well, and sit it out for the full 70-80 days. In the meantime, set up a QT. Let it cycle (without anything from main tank) and then in couple months you can put your first couple fish in there. They'll be through QT right when your tank is ready and you're back in business.
  6. Apex junior is really all you need - depending on what you are going to want to do in the future. If you just want some controls and temp monitoring, then it's great. If you think you'll want to add PH or more plugs then you need to start factoring that into your overall cost. The only downside to the junior used to be that they limited the number of additional modules you could add...so eventually you would reach a limit. But now you can expand all you want...it's just more expensive to do it piece by piece instead of all at once. Here's the thing - you can get a lot of control with just temp, PM1 and wxm (depending on your lights). You don't need the ORP or the salinity - which is a POS anyway. Get the APEX junior and go from there. That's what I did...although I eventually bought a full version, but only because I reached the maximum modules limit - which isn't an issue anymore.
  7. Off topic - but using screen door kits to make custom size tops is beyond easy. I made three top sections for my tank and it's great. Just don't put much weight on them!
  8. I'm sure the Nopox will help given enough time. It's just math at this point - only X amount of nitrates can be produced so adding stuff that eats up nitrates has to help some. Maybe the issue is what is causing the high nitrates in the first place? Over feeding? Not frequent enough water changes? Nopox should be used every night for a week then test and repeat. It only works if you keep it going - which is either true, or genius marketing on their part. From what I understand, each batch doesn't really eat up nitrates - it just helps build up the bacteria colony to where it will EVENTUALLY help. Like two weeks or so. I use it every night - have it hooked up to a doser. Well I did...just realized the doser stopped working. Probably for a week or so. For the first time in months I had brown on my glass, and that's why. So keep up the dosing!
  9. It's the same as hooking your heater up to the apex. Another level of security and the ability to get alarms etc. is priceless.
  10. Continuing my master restocking plan - got some more fish out: Medium+ Blonde Naso: 6in, eats nori by the sheet and NLS pellets. Love this fish but I want a pair and she isn't having that. $100. Harelquin Tusk: ate one too many snails. $80 Fox Face: $25. Need pick up before like 1pm today in NE portland or they're all going to C&C. Gotta make room for the wrasses to be moved!
  11. I was just about to post a 6in Blonde naso that eats like a beast. She turned aggressive towards my other naso, which I removed - but now I want to go back to a smaller pair together. I need her gone today though, so timing is the issue. $100.
  12. Hey this isn't ideal but if you're on fusion (meaning you can log on via the net) you can just give someone access to do the programming. Unless you want to learn, which is probably the best option! I'd be happy to help set up schedules for you this way.
  13. Hey where are you located? If i can get them Sat or Sun. I'll take the: 4p ASD Hyper Jubilees-$40 30+p gatorades-$35 7-8p sunny d's-$15
  14. yeah - I think i'll just keep it...I totally agree with you that at a certain point it's dumb to buy a used one and if they're going this cheap I'll hold onto it. I'll tell you this much though...if you're on the fence, buy it. It's the single best piece of equipment I've ever owned (fish related). It really changed everything and made keeping these tanks possible with my crazy schedule etc. Not to mention the email alarms that I hope to never receive. Good luck!
  15. I think this is it. There was a thread on R2R with a poll on who would spend that much.....and there are a lot of people who would I guess. http://reef2reef.com/threads/become-one-of-the-first-owners-of-the-kh-guardian.278622/#post-3376856
  16. They bought the technology so I'm assuming it's just going to take some time to make it actually feasible for a mass group of people. Right now those monitors are so complicated and expensive that it's not really feasible for 95% of hobbyists. My guess is they're shrinking and simplifying the entire process so more people can and will buy it. But it's a race - there are a few other options out there already. Of course those are like $1500 so who knows. Pretty big game changer though. Once you can 'set it and forget it' with KH it's going to be a ton easier for folks like me to keep things steady.
  17. ha - yeah, they're going to town on the buffet. I got a couple peppermint shrimp to deal with a tiny bit of aiptasia. As soon as that was gone they turned to my acans...took out two small colonies before I was able to catch them. They're opportunistic feeders. I wouldn't put them in the tank unless there's a need....and even then you should try Aiptaisa-X or something first.
  18. I gotta be honest - it doesn't sound like ich. Impossible for us to know...but if it's just one spot and it keeps coming back in the same place than that sounds like just a marking of some sort. My naso, for instance, goes through spells of dark spots when I'm messing inside the tank and stuff - then fades away. Could just be coloring. The ich spot will be raised off the scales while coloring will be flat against it. But to answer your previous question - the 80 day clock starts again the minute anything in your tank touches water from a tank with fish in it. So you gotta cycle the tank, move everything over (not fish), and then just chill for the full 80 days. If you add more rock or something from the infected tank (unless you're treating with hypo or something), then you gotta restart. And if you use copper, you don't want to use that rock in your display again ever.
  19. What did they ask for it? I have a jr with a pm1 probe on my qt. I'm curious what they sell for. I like having it but I barely use it and it's not connected to the net. Mainly it's a timer and heater failsafe for me.
  20. It's all so much personal taste that I don't know if anybody can really help you. Just do what people are suggesting - build it in the garage (also tape off height of tank and make sure you're leaving enough room for corals to grow).
  21. I also have a low PH issue. It hovers around 8 but dips down to 7.9 at night. Not horribly low, but I'd love to have it up about 8.1 all the time. There are so many contributing factors that I have no idea how to judge what the cause is. I have a 29 biocube in the same room which stays at 8.2-8.3. My guess is something with surface area to water volume. I used a Co2 scrubber and it worked great...gives you a little bump (maybe .1 or so). I just i didn't have the room and it kept getting knocked around. But it's a solid option. Or - kalk up your ATO reservoir. That takes a bit more fine tuning.
  22. I take my block of reef frenzy and cut it into squares about 3/4in x 3/4in. Then I can just grab one out of the bag (or two if I'm feeding corals). Never leaves the freezer!
  23. Sent. Let me know if you don't get it.
  24. You don't need the skimmer on the QT so just take whatever you want out of the set up before you nuke it with copper. Put the filter floss in now for sure....or, set up an old school sponge filter in the corner or something. Those work great but are not as fun to look at.
