  1. Here's where I got mine: http://www.shopmedvet.com/product/soda-lime-3-lb-bag I guess it was 3lb bag...not 10. With shipping it was $15 and I used about half of it to fill up the 2liter. I also drilled pretty big holes and used the lower foot part of a pair of pantyhose to wrap around the bottle so none of the soda lime could fall out.
  2. You can also run it through a CO2 scrubber right in your sump. I did that for a while and it worked very well, but I just don't have the space anymore. I just took a 2liter soda bottle, poked a bunch of holes in it and then filled it with soda lime...BRS even sells a version but I'm sure they charge a lot more than the online place I found. I think I got like 10pounds for $8. Anyway - poke a hole in the lid and run your airline into the bottle. Make sure enough holes are poked to get enough air into your skimmer. I got my PH up about .2 with it.
  3. I have a pair of Blonde naso's but after a 72hr blackout a week or so ago the smaller one just wont tolerate this larger male. I moved him to my sump last week and he's all ready to go - eats nori out of your hand and loves NLS. He's never really liked frozen... Anyway - I am heading to C&C at about 1, so if you want this guy let me know ASAP. He's fat and happy...photo would be in a dark sump so not really worth it. $80. Just text me: 512-731-7609
  4. Do you have an apex? You can rig your own ato with float valves for the big tank. Someone on here is selling a tunze 3155 as well, which is a great ato. I run that on my biocube.
  5. I've got a spare jabao 12000 new in box if that will help you out...but I agree that as long as you've got circulation and heat in the tank you'll be fine with no sump for a few days.
  6. What is the pump that goes to?
  7. Portland just closed all the schools for tomorrow. So now I'm working from home regardless. maybe some time for some tank maintenance.
  8. Good thing we all bought those generators a couple months ago. I just got done reading up on how to get mine going.
  9. What does something like that cost? If you don't mind me asking.
  10. So - lights are back on (20% moonlight morning after a 5% all night warm up). Corals opened right up - as in, right before my eyes. They were ready. Fish are all good - hungry. Only issue is my pair of Naso tangs seem to have forgotten each other existed. The female is absolutely brutalizing the male. Started as chasing around and this morning the male is tucked up in his corner just beaten to hell. Hopefully they've worked out their domestic issues and he'll just need a day or two to feel right again. Otherwise - water is crystal clear....as in eerily clear. Now we just have to wait and see if the sand turns brown.
  11. Update for anybody who might be interested in black out: Just about 48 hours into it....and this is pretty unnerving. I've gone down each morning/night to just take a quick look at things with a small flash light and we're in total shutdown mode. Every fish is slipped in between some rocks and the corals are all closed up. But...this is what people suggest doing every few months so I'm just going to power through until tomorrow. PH has remained very steady at about 7.9 - which is the night time level I reach....a bit on the low side, I know, but I'm just glad it isn't continuing to drop down. Skimmer pulling some good gunk. Nothing crazy though. I'm going to put the moon lights back on at 10% tomorrow night...then run the full lights at 20% on Friday, 40% Saturday. 50% Sunday and we're done.
  12. Basement windows blacked out. Going to let them go through night cycle and cut off lights in the morning. I'll let y'all know how it goes.
  13. Yeah, there were a variety of issues stemming from a lot of travel that I was doing. My nitrates were very high, my phosphates were pretty high, my RODI filters hadn't been changed in a while and I had a huge bio load. So I'm thinking the cause was more or less just poor husbandry and high nutrient levels. I've tried to address each of those issues independently with new RO filters, a phosban reactor, dosing nopox, limited feeding schedule, and removing a good chunk of bio load. With those steps I've gotten nitrate down around 10 (tested after 7 days before a water change) and phosphates down to between .06-.08 (which is still high but much better than the .25 I was getting earlier). I figure I will try to blackout to just knock it all out and then work on keeping nutrients super low and just see what happens... Thanks.
  14. I've got a minor Dino issue on the sand bed. Just can't kick that light brown dusting and it's driving me nuts and it's killing all my snails. I was thinking about dosing hydrogen peroxide but obviously it's a bit scary to add anything to the tank. So next option is just a three day total blackout. The tank is in the basement so I just have to cover two windows and thats it. Pretty easy. Question - it's a fully loaded reef with sps and lps. Will they manage the three days? I got to the source of the issue and have changed old rodi filters and gotten nitrates and phosphates way down as well as lowering my overall bio load, so I feel like I just need something to kick them out one last time.
  15. Yup - to clarify - apparently the app doesn't work but once you download the Dolphin browser you can go full screen with the Fusion web site. There's also a way to stop the sleep mode so it never turns off. I probably wont do that since I have kids that would just love to push buttons on it, but pretty nice option if you have a secure place.
  16. Just ordered one of these 7inch Fire tablets for $33....to use as my apex display in the cabinet. That's pretty insanely cheap. All you have to do is plug it in and stick it to the side of your cabinet and load up the apex app....easy easy full color touch display, so much better than what they give you with the unit.
  17. What's the issue with the EHEIMs? Those are usually considered among the best.
  18. Hey - that for sure sucks. You might be interested in doing what I did - and I can get you photos later. But basically, I used egg crate with bird netting stretched very tight across it - all tied down with zip ties, and all painted black. I was worried about having so much egg crate up there (for blocking light etc) so I just sized the crate to the top sizes I wanted and then cut out the majority of the egg crate in the middle sections - leaving a 2in border and then 2in braces in the middle. Then, when you pull the netting, you can secure it to the four sides of the top and along the middle support brace - which creates a very tight surface. I wouldn't set stuff on it, but it won't dip down into the water. If you want smaller holes then order some of the screen material from BRS or something like that. I got a bunch for $10-$15 I think and the spaces are quarter inch, and it's made out of a higher quality plastic vs. the looser, 1/2in bird netting. I feel like a goby or firefish could get through the bird netting, so if you go that route then just wrap the netting twice so theres overlap, which reduces the spacing. Hope that helps.

  20. Maybe I just did it wrong - but I followed the general advice on installation and they've always been super sensitive to any kind of bump. I took my water change station apart yesterday to clean (first time in a year) and both the uniseals are dripping. I'm hoping that once the water warms up the pressure will finally get them settled but what a PITA. According to the internet, the Brute cans are strong enough for a bulkhead so I'm going that route.
  21. Sorry, no. He's currently enjoying his new home at C&C.
  22. Seriously - these things are the worst. If you breathe too hard on one of the pipes the uniseal starts dripping. And oh man, heaven forbid if you happen to lightly bump into your RODI station at all - better get the buckets out. I'm done with uniseals....I'm switching my BRUTE's to thick 1in bulkheads. When that doesn't work I'm going to throw them all in the trash and get Norwesco tanks.
