Holly's Saltwater Haven - Part 1: The Room

Last year, I decided to go Big. I wasn't sure what that meant at the time, but I knew it involved something more than a larger tank. It began to take shape when I looked at whether or not I could do an in-wall tank. However, the room configurations just didn't pan out.

Close to throwing in the towel, I did some soul searching. It was important to me for other people to be able to enjoy a display tank, but also important was the enjoyment I get from watching corals grow, fragging, and just hanging out with my fish.

What grew was a consolidated reef room that included a 300-gallon display tank in the same room as two 60-gallon frag tanks, fish and coral quarantine tanks, and work area. Saltwater Haven!

So, this build thread. I'm splitting it into three parts, because that is how it roughly panned out for me. First, the remodel of the room, then the equipment, and finally, livestock. None of these things are completely done, but because I don't expect they ever will be, I thought I'd start on the threads.

PART 1 - The Room

I thought the room construction would be pretty easy--knock down the wall between two rooms and voila! However, what followed were carpenters (Did you know there is more to knocking down a wall than a sledge hammer? Plus, it isn't as fun as it looks. And you really do need a carpenter to turn a window into an exterior double door and to turn an interior door into a double door), sheet rockers (Did you know carpenters don't sheetrock? Who knew?), electricians (I needed two new breakers and outlets all over the frickin' place), plumbers (Must. Have. Sink.), concrete installers (a new door needs a new walkway), concrete dyers (when you pull up carpet, the concrete underneath is Ugly). All this and many hours of slave labor my husband and I put in. I expect that now I will be getting Christmas cards from both Lowe's and Home Depot.

From start to (almost) finish:
