  1. I re-gifted it to one of my granddaughters... I was happy to see that she liked it!
  2. Some holistic vets have recommended applying coconut oil to the cat's teeth and gums as a possible treatment for dental problems. Coconut oil fat is nearly 50% lauric acid, which is a compound with amazing health promoting properties. It contains antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral properties that boost the immune system. Lauric acid is converted by the body into monolaurin and makes coconut oil effective in treating many bacterial and fungal infections. I feel this may be worth a try. If you do decide to go with the vet's option of tooth removal, you might look into this. https://www.carecredit.com/
  3. If Powderblue doesn't, I do! Let me know.
  4. This may be helpful. http://marineplantbook.com/
  5. Why do I need a PAR/Quantum Meter? In-Depth Look at PAR/Quantum Meters
  6. In addition to not using a good quality RO/DI filter, there may also be other factors, such as over-feeding. Using a good quality Protein Skimmer, Granulated Activated Carbon, and a Phosphate Remover will all help keep excess nutrients down. Always start with, as Kim said, good quality water, the most popular is a RO/DI Unit (Reverse Osmosis/ De-Ionizing Resin Filter), or you may buy the water from your LFS (Local Fish Store). We have several PNWMAS Sponsors that sell these units. There are algae-grazing fish, such as Tangs and Rabbit Fish that will help keep that hair algae down better than the snail can.
  7. Here is a video about using the Apogee MQ-500 Full Spectrum Quantum PAR Meter, which was designed specifically to be used for aquariums with LED Lighting. Red Sea Reefer pt20: PAR Readings
  8. I know that everyone that goes to MACNA will have a great time! It is also a great opportunity to not only meet with vendors and speakers, but also members from other marine aquarium clubs! There also a lot of corals available to purchase at the booths! I have not planned on attending this year's conference, but I encourage everyone to go, if at all possible! The experience will last a lifetime! I also recommend to anyone wanting to know more about effects of lighting on coral growth and color, PAR, and the like... to attend the presentation by Dana Riddle http://macnaconference.org/2016/speakers/dana-riddle/ . Also, two of out most recent PNWMAS guest speakers, Bob Fenner http://macnaconference.org/2016/speakers/bob-fenner/, and Richard Ross http://macnaconference.org/2016/?p=904 will be there! Two-thirds of the speakers I have not met, so there is always something new for even old reef keepers like me! For $149.00, it is well worth it! I have always enjoyed the Banquet too, and the presentations given by the guest speakers. There are MASNA discount room rates, and a chance to win a trip to Fiji! I do know that Registration prices tend to increases, as Conference time approaches, so don't wait too long! Also, it is much better to stay at the hotel... reserve a room while there are vacancies! Like I said, it is well worth the price!
  9. Here are the Specs and Instructions for the new MQ-500 Quantum PAR Meter. A printed set of copies will accompany the meter. Please read the instructions before attempting to use the PAR Meter. There are various modes, and it is a bit more involved than the previous MQ-200 model. Remember that in borrowing the PAR Meter, you are responsible for any repairs resulting from damage that occurs while in your possession. The PAR Meter itself is not waterproof. Do not set it on the edge of your aquarium, as it may fall in! It is a precision instrument, and care must be taken to avoid dropping it on the floor or into water. The sensor is 100% waterproof however, and is made to be immersed in water. Loan of the MQ-500 Quantum PAR Meter is for PNWMAS Supporting Members only. A $50.00 refundable deposit is required, either at the time of pickup, or in advance to the PNWMAS account paypal@pnwmas.org at https://www.paypal.com/ It will be refunded when returned undamaged to the next person in line signed up for it's use. 10. We have received the PAR Meter, upgraded with a Full Spectrum Sensor, a month earlier than expected. However, the USB cord for computer use was not included with the upgrade. This will need to be ordered at a later date separately. I am going to deliver it to Miles on Saturday 6/25, as it had problems and he was unable to use it. It will then be available the following week to whoever is next in line... Gil&Fin, then you ChrisQ.
  11. So good to see you all had a great meeting like this! I missed seeing everyone. I don't think I have missed a meeting in a year and a half. The Physical Therapy is going ok, but I really wrecked my right knee while doing water changes.
  12. Thanks for giving this old thread a well-needed bump! If anyone has some favorite reef related links that they don't mind sharing, please post them here! Here are a few sites that have been around for many years. Before YouTube and Reef Forums. I hope you all enjoy this bit of reef tank history. Aquatic Book Shop http://www.seahorses.com/index.shtm FINS: The Fish Information Information Service t doesn't look like much at first, but it includes world-wide directories of clubs and stores. http://fins.actwin.com/about/index.php Aquabid http://www.aquabid.com/ The Krib - This is the oldest living aquarium web site, having been around since January 1994. Lot's of old, but very interesting and useful info. http://www.thekrib.com/Marine/ GARF http://www.garf.org/navagation.html This has been around over 30 years now, and is still a fun website. Leroy Headlee, the co-founder and director of the infamous Geothermal Aquaculture Research Foundation, (GARF) was the first person... to my knowledge, to actually frag corals in the Pacific Northwest. We were amazed when we had Leroy, and his wife, Sally Jo, at a have a Club Workshop with us back around the early 1990s. They were the first to show us how to frag corals... it just simply was not done! All coral sold in stores then were basically all collected in the wild, and there were no frags yet sold in stores! Leroy passed away in 2012, but Sally Jo continues his legacy with this fun website. They show how to maintain and propagate, without all the 'Hi-Tech.' Some good aquaculture ideas. http://www.garf.org/navagation.html
  13. One of our Sponsors, Reef Cleaners, has Fuzzy Chitons. Ask if you can get a price break for buying quantities. https://www.reefcleaners.org/aquarium-store/fuzzy-chiton
  14. Some other great videos. https://www.youtube.com/user/AmericanReefChannel
  15. You might want to look into the Aquarium Science Program http://oregoncoastcc.org/aquarium-science at Oregon Community College in Newport, Oregon. We have had behind-the-scenes tours there, along with tours of the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and The Oregon Coast Aquarium. Hopefully, this will continue as an annual PNWMAS event.
  16. The PAR Quantum Meter is currently being upgraded to a Full Spectrum Sensor, with a USB Cable for using with a computer. The upgraded meter should be back after July 14, 2016, as the sensors are back-ordered. Sorry for the inconvenience, but we feel it will be worth the wait!
  17. I agree Bert. There are many factors that contribute to acidification and temperature increase, which are both, in fact happening... no doubt some natural causes, and some caused by man. I am just posting actual facts here about what is actually happening, and not any causes.
  18. A general consensus that this is even happening is needed before anything is done. It looks like Australian Government is looking the other way. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/27/great-barrier-reef-axed-from-un-climate-change-report-after-aust/
  19. No problem. While some people will deny Global Warming, we have lost over 90% of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, due to coral bleaching from high temperatures. Some will argue that our pollution is not enough to impact the environment. Everyone needs to get involved, whether it is acting locally, sharing information like this, and signing petitions to create or stop certain bills and damage from corporations. It was good to know that some of the Hawaiian coral bleaching is recovering. Lets hope it is not temporary.
  20. Hey Terry Richard Ross enjoyed your shop, and meeting you and Woody! It looked like business was doing well while we were there a couple of weeks ago. Post some pics of your store and livestock when you get a chance!

  22. Thanks for sharing this video Shawn. This shows the effort involved with coral propagation in Indonesia, including Bali, along with some of the maintenance required for an operation of this size from fragging to exporting.
  23. Our June Meeting will be held Sunday the 12th at The Premium Aquarium - Wilsonville. It will begin at 2:00 PM. This is the newest location for The Premium Aquarium - Wilsonville 30789 SW Boones Ferry Rd Suite K, Wilsonville, OR 97070, USA Phone: 503-570-2781 We will be having a BBQ, and potluck... so bring along whatever you wish to share! The owner, Erin Powers does have a guest speaker planned, and he will post more about this very soon!
  24. For those that may have missed it, the presentation may be available on YouTube soon, and the link will be posted in our PNWMAS Forum when it is! Here are links to Rich's "Skeptical Reefkeeping!" At Reefs Magazine https://www.reefs.com/forum/reefs-magazine/77954-skeptical-reefkeeping-richard-ross.html ...and on his Homepage http://packedhead.net/category/skeptical-reefkeeping/
  25. As Richard Ross discussed at yesterday's PNWMAS Presentation, "The Secret of Reef Keeping", check your test results several times. We hardly ever re-test when the results are favorable.
