While training divers on responsible and sustainable fish and coral collection in Tonga, we came across this octopus. As Tonga is mostly a substance culture, the divers we were training wanted to catch the octopus to help feed their families. One of them grabbed a claw hammer and proceeded to smash up several meters of coral while catching the octopus. One the boat I asked him ‘we just spent all day talking about how not to damage the reef, and there are easier ways to catch octopus, so why use a hammer?’. He answered ‘they bite’. ‘No they don’t’ I said, picking up the octopus and putting it on my head, where luckily it didn’t bite me, going on to discuss better ways to catch octopus. We then talked about how sustainable and responsible ideas applied to everything including fishing, and how respecting habitat means there will be creatures there for a long time to come.
  15. It would seem that would be the best way to do it. Everyone is welcome! Remember, it is ages 8 and up. A few times I have had my daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughters along. They have always enjoyed the tours!
  16. So far, only 2 people have paid. We really need to send money in now! We estimated at least 30 people were going. Please start sending in your payments to this link! http://www.pnwmas.org/page/oregon_coast_aquarium_behind_the_scenes_tour_payment_page.html
  17. I was considering going to Newport on Saturday. Hopefully people will carpool here! If you need a ride, or can share a ride, please post here! Thanks!
  18. I really don't know. Naptha is liquid lighter fluid., like Ronson. It is fairly inexpensive. A little white or apple cider vinegar added to some water, also works very well. I have repaired Hex tanks, using it for a cleaner. Hex tanks require a very strong bond.
  19. With inflation, we have done our best to keep costs down on this event. I know that everyone will have a great time, and the cost is really about the price of a nice frag or fish! ..and the experience will be a memory that you will not forget! Please join us in Newport! There is so much to see in there! I just might arrive a day early, and make a weekend out of it! https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g51992-Activities-Newport_Oregon.html
  20. One thing I can tell you is that prep work is very important, and will give you the best hold. Clean the glass surfaces to be joined with either naptha, or mild acetic acid solution (vinegar water). This will help clean the surfaces of any traces of oils, providing a much better seal. I have always been sure that all surfaces are completely dry, the allow at least the recommended curing time before refilling the tank. The original silicone aquarium sealer was made by Dow Corning (at one time, they used to have a guarantee on their product package). I have had no problems with this, or other brands , such as DAP, or GE #1. I can't really say what brand is better, but you may consider talking to these people about sealers. http://www.fullredguppy.com/silicone.html
