  1. I just discovered the first bristle worm in my tank tonight while looking around with a flashlight. It's at least 5" long, possible longer since I couldn't see the other end under the rocks. A little creepy, but pretty cool to watch. I wonder how long it's been there without me knowing???
  2. Bump... There are several new members on the forum. Maybe some of them want to chime in on their life outside of reefing?
  3. I can’t give you any definitive answer, but are you aware of last week’s Apex Fusion outage that caused all sorts of problems for Apex Classic/Lite devices? Here’s the official statement from Neptune: ”NOTICE: Yesterday, at approximately 19:45 PST we had a hardware failure to a key Apex Fusion server located with AWS. Our normal operating procedure for such an event went into effect and Apex Fusion was back to normal operation for all customers in less than 25 minutes. During this outage, a percentage of Apex Classic customers (ApexClassic, Apex Gold, Apex Lite, and Apex Jr) were affected in that upon not receiving proper communication from this server, they reached a never-before-seen unstable state, and then subsequently rebooted as a recovery method. We have reports that some rebooted several times. We are currently investigating this issue in an attempt to recreate it in our lab, and if we can do that, put in place a software fix to prevent it from happening in the future. Second generation Apex owners (the “2016” model) were not affected in this way because they maintain connection and communicate to Apex Fusion in a slightly different manner. They simply lost connection with the Apex Fusion servers for that time while we were performing the recovery. By 20:15 PST our server was back online and all Apex should have been back to normal operation. If your Apex remains disconnected from Apex Fusion, please contact our support team here: https://www.neptunesystems.com/support/contact-support/ No data was lost and no programming or configuration on your Apex was changed due to this downtime event. Your Apex should be operating normally at this time. We apologize for this service interruption.”
  4. Ha! It’s pretty bad when your screen name gets blocked by the language filter. 🤣
  5. Last week I posted a video showing my diamond goby preparing his burrow for bedtime and then diving in. This time, I captured it in 240 fps slow motion: I think the blue chromis were thinking, "Whoa...what the f*ck just happened? Where did he go?". 🤣
  6. I do that sometimes too. I try to mix it up a bit rather than feeding the same thing every time.
  7. Here's a time-lapse video after feeding Reef Roids to my scoly at night. I shined a UV flashlight on it to capture the colors. The elapsed time of filming was 18 minutes, but compressed down to a 1 minute clip:
  8. I've had two anthias in my 88 gallon display tank for over 6 months and they've been healthy and active. Yesterday, the larger anthias began acting oddly, swimming vertically and twitching side to side. Today, he's just laying nearly motionless on the sand at the back of the tank. Still breathing normally, and no visible spots or other symptoms. During feeding he did eat, but just swimming very slowly and erratically. All my other fish including the smaller anthias seem fine. All water parameters are normal, and I test frequently. Any ideas what would cause this, and any suggestions for treatment? Video from yesterday: Photo today:
  9. It took a lot of convincing to get my wife to agree to me drilling a hole through the wall for my garage mixing station. Unfortunately that hole is only big enough for the 1/4" poly tubing, so I'd need to drill larger holes for a remote sump. Since I'm already working on her to agree to building a large addition on the house with a dedicated fish room, I'm going to keep working that angle. The last thing I want is to compromise on a remote sump and lose the fish room battle. 🤣
  10. I'm seriously considering re-doing my whole sump and plumbing to make this fit my Reefer XL 425. I've tried mesh socks, felt socks, and now filter cups with fiber. I don't like any of them. But the way my sump is currently set up there's no way to make a roller fit, so I'm going to need to spend some time at the drawing board. In particular, my refugium sits above the sock chamber, and then my UV sterilizer is directly above that. I'll need to relocate both.
  11. Welcome Simon! Yes, this local forum is a great resource. I’ve only been reefing for one year, but I’ve learned so much and received great advice from people here. If you have a chance, attend the monthly meetings. It’s great to put faces to the names, and the conversations are always informative if not entertaining. And if you haven’t noticed, we really enjoy seeing photos posted! Good or bad. Looking forward to seeing your tank.
  12. @What_The_Frag Can you tell me the dimensions (L x W) of the lower section that sits down in the sump? I've searched online and can only find overall dimensions for the unit including the motor and roller. I'm just curious if the bottom section would even fit in my Reefer XL 425 sump's sock chamber or if I'd need to modify or replace the sump.
  13. This might be a dumb question, but why are they called powerheads? Most other aquarium equipment is named for what they do; Skimmers skim. Heaters heat. Lights light. Was Powerhead originally a brand name, like Xerox is known for copy machines and Kleenex is known for tissue? It's just one of those nagging questions that keeps me up at night. 🤣
  14. I really wish I had more room in my sump for a roller filter, but my current setup just won’t fit one. My next tank will have one for sure!
  15. I just picked up an AquaMaxx Coral Eye flashlight for night time coral viewing: Here are some photos I shot tonight after lights out. The flashlight does a pretty good job of bringing out a lot of colors:
  16. I’m guessing you meant to quote @Blue Z Reef in this reply.
  17. I have two 300w heaters controlled by my Apex, so you doubling up your 150w heaters on a single outlet should be no problem.
  18. Based on your question, I assume you have the older EB8 power strip, not the newer EB832, correct? If so, the relay outlets (#4 & #8) are best reserved for very low power draw devices because the TRIAC outlets (#1-3 & #5-7) can sometimes fail to turn off when the power draw is very low, failing in an Open state. As long as your heater doesn’t pull more than 5 amps it will be fine in any of the TRIAC outlets. The newer EB832 uses relays for all outlets and they’re all 7 amp.
  19. Here's an updated version of the macro video I posted yesterday. I added several additional corals (28 in total) and listed names for each. (please excuse any mis-named corals as a couple are unknown)
  20. So is the bidding for a package of all 3 corals, or are these two being auctioned individually?
  21. I finally took the time to read up on the video settings for my Nikon D610 camera, and shot some coral macro video:
  22. You should buy it and attach it to Jaggy’s tank...maybe the extra calcium will strengthen his fins and grow some huge teeth! 🤣
  23. That's weird, it looks back to normal for me now. Earlier today it looked totally different with tiny black icons representing member locations rather than the larger blue drop pins, and no shops shown. All fine now.
