  1. Here are a few photos I took after lights out, but shining my UV flashlight on the corals. It gives a very different perspective than the daytime lighting.
  2. Live cam right now at @albertareef's house:
  3. It really helps when you find it at B&H Photo for $400 off because the box was opened!
  4. I check my nitrates fairly frequently, and it ranges from 4 ppm to 8 ppm (using Red Sea Nitrate Pro kit which isn't granular enough to be more precise).
  5. I agree, the contrasting colors are cool. Iā€™m just curious if others have seen this kind of color change.
  6. It came from Jason Fox, so I assume it was under his magical lights that made it look like this:
  7. Maybe it was harvested from the wild in one large chunk.
  8. Four months ago I added a RR Tropic Thunder Monti to my tank. Here's how it originally looked: And here's how it looks today, with a lot of new growth encrusting the rocks: Any idea why the original section changed from pink/orange to a dark purple? All the new growth appears to match how it looked when I got it. I wonder if the new growth will also darken to purple over time?
  9. Jeff, will you be returning to normal hours for spring/summer? Us retired folks need things to do and places to go on Mondays and Tuesdays! šŸ˜Š
  10. I got two dragonface pipefish to eat the red bugs (micro amphipods) that are attacking my acroporas. These pipefish feed exclusively on live copepods and amphipods. They are best kept in pairs and they tend to spend all day side by side hunting pods. They are visual hunters so they can only feed when the lights are on. The only problem is that if they run out of pods they will starve.
  11. I'm using a Nikon D610 camera with Nikon 200mm f/4 macro lens: I've posted many photos from this lens in the Gallery forum. Here's an example: I posted about my UV flashlight last week in this post: I'm bringing the camera to the March 30th meeting at Paradise Coral for the photography workshop, so stop by if you want to check it out in person.
  12. Has anyone ever seen this before? My tailspot blenny has suddenly taken an interest in my green goniopora! (@Lexinverts Andy, you'll recognize this one) My clowns still won't go near my anemone, but I'll take whatever I can get. šŸ˜ƒ It's pretty cute:
  13. In case it's not obvious to everyone, you can scroll through the photos in the post above and there's a small voting circle below each photo. The button to submit your vote is at the very bottom of the list. On my screen, I only see the 1st 3 photos until I hover my mouse over them and scroll.
  14. My report last month showed some damaged tips, no new growth, and the beginnings of a red bug infestation. This month, I'm glad to report the damaged tips have recovered and there are several new branches growing. Not much increase in overall height, but definitely getting wider and thicker: The red bugs are still there, but in fewer numbers. Hopefully that's a sign that my pipefish are doing their job! Below are some macro shots using my UV flashlight highlighting the red bugs:
  15. I saw a news report that the entire street will need to be excavated and rebuilt from scratch. I feel bad for those residents. That's going to be very disruptive for a long time.
  16. Last summer PGE did some scheduled maintenance in my neighborhood and had to shut down the power. I rented a small Honda 2000 generator from Home Depot in advance and it ran over 7 hours on a gallon of gas. I'm so glad my whole-house generator runs on natural gas and comes on automatically! It kicked on last month in the middle of the night and I didn't even realize we had a power outage until the morning when I saw the alert it sent my phone.
  17. Wow, that sucks. At least you have a generator! How long can it run before refilling?
  18. Wow! Instant sunburn!!! šŸ˜Ž
  19. The breakout box on Apex is read-only, so it can't directly control valves or other outputs. As @Jlpete stated in the original post, the trick is having enough 24v outputs on the Apex to actually control the valves is the biggest issue. It would be nice if Neptune offered a 24v multi-outlet module to connect multiple valves, solenoids, and other devices in one compact module.
  20. Just curious, how may watts is that UV light, and how many GPH flow through it?
  21. Admit it...deep down you're just dying to convert it into a reef tank! šŸ¤£ Cool equipment.
  22. I hope they have a quarantine tank. šŸ˜¬
