  1. So this will be a very naive question, but which one would be the way to go? 1- build the wall then make the window inside and finally slide the tank inside the frame? or 2- Build the wall with the window frame and then slide the tank in? or 3- Build the wall around the tank? I have heard mostly people talking about 1 and 2. Is 3 just not a good idea/difficult/too risky/messy not practical (all of the above)? The family is debating the options, with a push for this taking as little time from me as possible..(wife) . A pop up could be pretty cool with the right carpentry indeed.
  2. Those are all interesting ideas. the wall to the left goes outside unfortunately. the pop up idea is intriguing. Do you happen to have a link to one of those tanks? It would definitely help to not be squeezed in the back! Of course the alternative would be to just get James to build it for me with the right dimensions...for that space.
  3. Thanks Jay, those are great suggestions. yes I agree with the door, the only reason for putting it on the left would have been to access directly the water control without having to go around tehe tank. But I like the tank more in the middle. Agree also with the shorter for more access in the back. One of the tank I am looking at (used) has the dimensions above so if I go for that one I won't have the choice. But I am still debating. My current tank is 30 high and I like that a lot but it takes more lights to get to the bottom. I agre with the stand height although I am planning on sitting down mostly and also this is a good height for my kids to look inside
  4. I am just about to make the plunge and move from my 200G to a bigger tank. I just outgrew that tank. Looks very likely that it will be a 270G Acrylic 72" long 24" tall and 36" wide. But I might have to make this a 30" wide given the tight fit in the back? For now I am at the planning stage since i'd like an in wall system. The main reasons for the inwall are (and I am sure I am teh only one who would come up with these reasons (laugh)): 1) a wife very sensitive to noise (I mean really sensitive DOH!) 2) A wife very sensitive to that deadly UV light creeping out of the back (very very sensitive (threaten)) 3) We survived an accidental flood (friend taking care of tanks forgot to turn off the DI water while replenishing the topoff tank (wife) Several $$ thousand $$ later) and have remodeled the play room giving space for an in wall project. A new wall will have to be built. I am trying to do this without having to demolish anything. 4) Always wanted an inwall and got inspired by Izzypop's beautiful set-up. 5) I am running out of space in my current tank. Here is the current idea on paper, it will be a tight squeeze in the back (leaving about 15 inches to navigate) but most maintenance will occur from the sides and under the tank. There is also already a sink with water access on the left side on the little nook. Since I have never done anything like that I am opened to suggestions in order to make this happening. Several members (reef165 , reefgeek84 , spectra) have already offered advices and help when the time comes. (scary) Two possibilities to access the tank first one, Door will be on the left or Door on the right (my prefered option since it centers the tank a little more to the left)
  5. The tank is officially for sale now and looking better than ever. Almost sad to break it down .
  6. Very impressive tank Garrett. It's really taking off! If you have frags from those blue zoos , let me know I'd love some
  7. That looks great. Are the picture on the right the room before you put the tank there?
  8. Moving forward Ok great. This was discussed at the Board Meeting and the Club meeting yesterday. We are moving forward with this. A list of donated items and needed items will be posted as well so that peole can check what they can contribute to make it happen. Our plan is to start teh first tank with DSOZ and make it work. Reefgeek are you still giving your complete system for that first trial? Could you remind us what is missing ? Thanks
  9. here are some info about Howard Frumkin coming to PSU November 8 to talk about what we can do to prepare ourselves against climate change.
  10. Here is who I have down for some Chaeto that I will bring at the Meeting Sunday. Dsoz Spectra defigart Jay Danlu-gt Barelycuda Kuda Rugbyfish El Salvador Hope I did not forget anyone. See you all Sunday if anyone is interested in Sand trade/mixing, bring a scoop from your tank we will mix it up and divid it back, so that biodiversity can be enriched. Goes without saying that this is assuming you have no crisis/pest in your tank currently.
  11. Thanks JayR, excellent thread. very interesting. Yes if/when I start on that project I will definitely start a thread. I am still in the contemplation mode, gathering the data, the resources, the experience from others and the knowledge.
  12. Thanks Brandon, I'll make sure I catch it! Sounds awesome!
  13. I am contemplating getting a new system and was wondering what people have done/used/ consulted with/ recommend when it comes to build/get a stand. Home made? Steel? Wood? the tank will be about 300 Gal 72x30x30, in wall , so no esthetic requirement here. I can use a saw and probably make a wooden stand but my wife does not trust my carpentry abilities. That's what you get for being a nerd. (sad) She wants something "professional" or from someone who has experience. One recommendation was to use a steel stand to get more access under the tank Suggestions? Thanks
  14. For the interested as well as the sceptic here is a chance to have a discussion in Oregon and learn more about this (notice it says Climate change, not Global warming) Howard Frumkin of CDC will give 2 talks in Portland Thursday, November 8 about "Climate Change: Implications for Public Health." 12n: GSA Auditorium, 911 NE 11 Ave [This event is in a secure location (Bonneville); people will have to go through security like at the airport.] 6pm: PSU, Smith Center, Room 327-329, 1825 SW Broadway
  15. Yes right on Twitt. I picked up one of his magic scraper last week. You are absolutely right it's dynamite, I can finally look through my tank again and see what's inside it's completely amazing and so easy ! I highly recommend it.
  16. Fair enough (well except for backing up Bush , but he really needs you so lets give that one a rest (clap) ) Hey you are on the right track Twitt. (clap) I do respect your views and I do agree with a fair part of what you said (not all though,). Thanks for clarifying !
  17. Love your brother! What a bunch of nonsense. But should I expect more from Trash Talk? But here is an idea. How about we change the way our taxes are spent so that we have a saying on what is being done/our $$ is being used since we disagree. So for instance you will give all your $$ to "support our troop" since you believe it is worth it, and you got that big fat tax break you don't know what to do with in your pocket right?. And I'll use mine to any worthy cause I believe in. Would you support such a resolution? better I challenge you to put a motion at the legislature level to pass such a proposal. Are you game? Do you have guts? In the mean time, if you want to do something meaningful while you are stationed at your computer: e-mail the house and senate in DC and ask to override Bush's veto on the S-Chip. Override the Veto on the NIH research Budget. I am sorry but I cannot suport the financing of a war against a phantom enemy that benefits many wealthy industrials, contractors, allows the government to abuse power, diminish civil liberties etc.. and has clearly no plan in any direction, we are just throwing away billions of $$ and compromising important programs here on US soil that are throwing us back into the dark age (if you don't believe that look at where we rate for health care in the world: #33). But Maybe you don't think health care is important, should we chose who deserve it, based on their wealth?. that would be an interesting idea would it? If you really love your country then open your eyes and see how it is perceived by the rest of the world while the rating is getting lower every day but most importantly we are doing more arms here in the US by neglecting the basics (healthcare, environment, pollution, water quality, food quality, social programs, freedom, civil liberties, and more..) of what a true "compassionate" leadership is about. Leadership is not about guts to do what you (as an oil thirsty millionaire ) think is important but about having the guts to recognize what is best for the people and LISTEN to what they want, and admit when you made a mistake and make the correction. We can't engage into a convenient war (that so far has benefited who ? You? The Iraqis? Or the terrorist? Balckwater, Holyburton? oil companies? certainly not me) while people don't have proper health care, 2.5 million children uninsured, and we are clearly seeing that the rich are getting richer while the middle class (maybe you and me) is just getting flushed down the drain. That is just irresponsiblel and pure arrogance. Bush was wrong on many instance with regard to the Ozone layer, Global warming etc... He ridiculed those ideas so badly that everyone saying Global warming was labeled as a "vegan tree hugger" (I know you like that one:D) short of being anti-patriot for not having the same point of view as the administration. Now that the world has recognized that those are issues we need to adress, what is he doing to adress those issues. HAs he recognized his mistakes and started to put wheels in motions? If he has please let me know of what great program I need to support (or what program you are currently supporting as a matter of fact)? Please, cut the trash talk and try to make a difference if you really care. Send me a progress report of your good deeds in 2 weeks I'll continue supporting awareness of global issues that won't result in more deaths but try to improve the world's harmony. I am counting on you. (laugh) Peace
  18. Welcome , and looking forward to meeting you at one of the next meetings, possibly teh December Xmas Party. Sounds like you did some sound planning.Very exciting! Post some pics , people love pics of about almost anything! Cheers(welcome)
  19. Brandon, how many fishes will you kep in there? I would base it on that. If not that many and not too big (i.e bioload might not be too high) I'd go for the cheaper model. If you expect your bioload to be high, go bigger. But knowing you, you'll be changing tank in 6 months. So you might want to get just what you need for this one, i.e. the smaller one that is efficient. For me I would probably get the bigger one, because I would probably be going bigger at some point. Good luck!
  20. Shawn, thanks for the sequence pump and the seaswirl. Shawn really gave me a great deal on those and then as if this was not generous enough he gave me 4 frags that he freshly cut from his mother colonies. All corals are growing happily and bring new colours to my tank. And Shawn, the birdnest is still pink! As always his tank is a real Gem! Great and nice guy to deal with!
  21. Daniel let me know if you still want some. I'll bring some for 7 people so far (I can add one more bag for you) at the meeting on Sunday. I even found some feather dusters growing in it but can't guarantee they will be as abundant as pods.
  22. Do more to better the planet So great, we are on the same page (daz). So how do you think we do that (watch ourselves ) ? How do we make all this happen and invest into a better future as you said for the future generations?
