  1. I have one and love it. My Apex runs it for 1 minute every 6 hours. Works great. I also added a skimmate locker and set my Apex to turn off the skimmer when full. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Please post some photos of corals you picked up at Frag Fest so I can see what I (unfortunately) missed out on.
  3. Who will be live streaming from FragFest? 🤓
  4. If a random person came across this post and didn't know what reefing is, they'd assume you're on your way to a drug deal...
  5. Here's the list for today: @pdxmonkeyboy - In @CrabbyCrabs - In +1 @Jfruity24 - In @SuncrestReef - In @NateDawg - In @Gumby - In @Jeremevans - In @youcallmenny - In @jtarmitage - In @xmas_one - In @Krux - In @Mchums - In @sroberts - In if starting before Nov 5 or after Nov 18 @lewisriverfisherman - In if starting after Nov 11 Current count = 15 Undecided: @Salted_Waffles - possibly interested depending on date Still waiting to hear from: @503reefland - unclear (if anyone is tired of getting alerts about this thread, let me know and I can un-tag your screen name)
  6. I vote to hand the role of herding the cats back over to @pdxmonkeyboy since he obviously has a lot of spare time.
  7. I propose a vote by all participants on coral measurement technique. I don't know how to create a poll on this forum. Perhaps someone else can assist with that? Measure with a ruler Measure by weight Measure by water displacement Obviously this will need to be determined prior to the competition start because initial measurements will need to be taken, and we can't change the process later without the proper initial measurements.
  8. I don't want to complicate things, but I doubt using a ruler would be effective with the irregular growth patterns possible on a SPS frag. I've been tracking the growth of my green slimer every month since I got it, and it has developed so many small branches in every direction that it would be impossible to get a ruler into every position needed to measure them. Not only has it grown longer branches, it has also gotten thicker. I think the only practical ways to measure would be either weight or water displacement, as was discussed earlier in this thread.
  9. I'm new to this whole grow out contest thing, but I'm happy to help and just jumped in on compiling the participant list since it seemed like someone needed to do it. In addition to what @Jeremevans outlined above, I think there is still the undecided method of measuring growth and/or coloration to determine the winner. There was a lively debate on this earlier in the thread, but then died down. Any suggestions on coming up with the final rules? For now I'll just stick to tracking the list of participants, but I'm willing to help in other aspects if needed. I'm noting those who also mentioned specific date conflicts due to vacations and will include that in the next list update.
  10. @CuttleFishandCoral Jeff, what would be a realistic start date for people to pick up the frags?
  11. I'll update the list once per day until the competition starts (since pdxmonkeyboy doesn't like "herding cats" 😂). Should there be a cutoff date to sign up? @pdxmonkeyboy - In @CrabbyCrabs - In +1 @Jfruity24 - In @SuncrestReef - In @NateDawg - In @Gumby - In @sroberts - In @Jeremevans - In @youcallmenny - In @jtarmitage - In @xmas_one - In Current count = 12 Can the following please confirm in or out? @lewisriverfisherman - possibly interested @Mchums - possibly interested @Ron - unclear @503reefland - unclear
  12. I'll update the list and note you for two. Competing against your girlfriend? Sounds like a bad idea to me...😂
  13. Jeff, is it the piece in the photo you posted here yesterday?
  14. OK, here's the updated list: @pdxmonkeyboy - In @CrabbyCrabs - In @Jfruity24 - In @SuncrestReef - In @NateDawg - In @Gumby - In @sroberts - In @Jeremevans - In @lewisriverfisherman - possibly interested @Mchums - possibly interested @Ron - unclear @503reefland - unclear @youcallmenny - unclear
  15. I skimmed through this thread and compiled a list of who wants to participate. It looks like at least 8 of us are in, but some others only expressed possible interest or were unclear: pdxmonkeyboy - In crabbycrabs - In jfruity24 - In suncrestreef - In natedawg - In gumby - In sroberts - In jeremevans - In lewisriverfisherman - possibly interested Mchums - possibly interested albertareef - unclear manny tavan - unclear ron - unclear 503reefland - unclear youcallmenny - unclear
  16. The generator installation is now complete after passing all inspections! Here's a quick video showing the generator automatic transfer switch cutting over from generator power to utility power for my house. This was filmed while manually testing the generator, and you'll see at 0:15 the transfer switch solenoid snaps closed automatically to connect the house back to utility power. The generator remains running for about 2 minutes after the cutover just in case the utility power fails again, so the transfer switch could automatically return to generator power without the delay of starting up the generator again. Once the utility power has been solid for 2 minutes, the generator shuts itself down. I'm pretty happy with this setup! Bring on those winter storms...
  17. Welcome! I just got into reefing for the first time early this year, and I've gotten a lot of great advice and some nice frags from members of this forum. Looking forward to seeing your build!
  18. @pdxmonkeyboy I assume you are the one coordinating this...What do you think the approximate timeframe will be to start, and how long does the grow out last? With the holidays coming up, I want to make sure I'm planning accordingly.
  19. The Twilight Dragon I got from @badxgillen is looking pretty good in my tank. 🙂
  20. If you have a chance, head out to the Oregon coast in the next week while the weather is still nice and the fall colors are at their best. Had a great day today at Cape Falcon and Cannon Beach. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. Just curious, it the tank on a stand with a solid top? In the photo it looks like perhaps the glass is on a stand with cross bars, so is the powerhead magnet against the glass bottom or is there another layer of stand support below the powerhead?
  22. How about using sheets of black acrylic and a hot glue gun? Can't get much more DIY than that. With hot glue you can easily work around irregular shapes and rounded corners by just building up layers of the glue before attaching the outer sheathing. Then you can finish it off with @pdxmonkeyboy's glitter idea. #teamwork.
  23. @TheClark, @Chief: For the past couple days I've had intermittent trouble accessing this site. Yesterday it reported "Error 500, too many connections". Just a minute ago today it said "Connection refused". These are server-side errors, not local browser issues. Any ideas what's going on? Just curious, Is this site on a shared hosting platform or a dedicated server?
  24. Here's a video tour of my display tank, lighting, sump, plumbing, electronics, and mixing station.
