  1. I took Jeremy's and Brad's idea and put one of them on Reef to Reef POTM just for fun.
  2. I introduced my Black Photon Clownfish ("Sanjay") to my beautiful blue carpet anemone from Cuttlefish. It was love at first sight.
  3. For what it's worth, I make these covers for my powerheads to keep the nems safe (and to keep my tank from getting fouled by their guts). All it takes are a gutter guard, plastic needlepoint canvas, and zip ties. I've tried a lot of other wraps and they either restrict water flow, get clogged, or the clever nem gets in anyway. The white one is an "early prototype" that didn't fit really well. I use it in a frag tank so I don't care so much.
  4. Thanks, Jeremy. Vinyl planking is beautiful and durable. If we ever did actually have to pull up the existing floor and replace it we would take a look at vinyl. Thanks for the advice. In hindsight, I would have taken more precautionary measures (as you said, like gluing the seams) but that train has left the station. I'm wondering if I could talk the floor guy into "mistakenly" cutting a section out that would fit a 180-gallon rather than my 110-gallon. Then I would HAVE to go bigger, right? It's funny...I wasn't even worried about leaks, I just didn't expect the ambient moisture to have such an effect. I have a fan running on my tank that dissipates some of the moisture, but I discounted the extent of humidity. Plus, there is salt creep in the back. Live and learn, right?
  5. Great advice, Chris. Unfortunately, the floor guy had a moisture meter and found 18% in a couple of places. He said that I need to dehumidify the area before he starts working. It would be really, really cool if you could swing by sometime and let me know what you think. I'll PM you to see if we can make that work. Regardless, thanks for the advice and the offer to help.
  6. My 110-gallon display tank and stand sit on my living room oak hardwood floor. No leaks, but moisture is getting into the wood causing some bowing and cupping. I'm going to need to break down the tank, move it, get the floors redone, then move it back. I'm thrilled. Not. Here's the thing: I don't want to do this and then have the same thing happen. The floor guy suggested either some type of "pan" similar to what goes under a clothes washing machine or a layer of cork flooring on top of the hardwoods and extending about 6 inches out from under the stand. I can't be the first person who has had this problem. What all do you put under your tanks to protect your hardwoods?
  7. I'm wondering if you like SPS...
  8. It's great that you posted the "before" pictures. It really gives context to the work you are putting in now. I love the aquascape. I can't wait to see how things progress. Thanks for posting!
  9. For me it was tequila that did it.
  10. Wow! That's a lot of information. In short, I was thinking about a 9w at about 100gph. It sounds like that is not too off base but maybe not ideal for maximum effectiveness. I'd like to give it a go if I can find one. Thanks for the info!
  11. I'm thinking about adding a UV sterilizer to my 29 gallon quarantine tank. If anyone has an extra they have lying around they want to part with, let me know. Right now all that is in there are some PVC, a couple of disposable plastic plants and a HOB filter, seeded from one of my displays. Also, if there is any advice on the subject out there, I'm all ears. Thanks!
  12. No way! That rocks! Thank you, Garrett for your generous donations. For all of you who are not paid members...do it! Special member raffles are only one of many benefits of being a paid member. It's well worth it!
  13. It's great that you're interested in the program! There are a lot of very knowledgable and generous people on this forum and I am confident that we can help you get going. My stepson is going to BHS next year and I would be happy to help anyway I can. I did a little digging around and I understand that there used to be an application in the Tank for Teachers forum, but it doesn't look like it is there anymore. The new officers and board members will be taking office on July 1, so you might want to wait until that happens. Will you be there in the summer? If not, we can pick this up in the fall. In the meantime, it would be great to hear what you have in mind!
  14. All sold. Sorry for not posting that sooner. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  15. You know how sometimes you love your tank, and others it seems like everything is going wrong? Well, I'm having a good day so I thought I'd share some pics. I hope I don't jinx it...
  16. Ha ha, then I must be dumb, too. I had trouble until I figured out that you have to sign in to vote. Once you sign in there are check boxes next to the name.
  17. I just voted and I don't think it's a done deal. For those of you that haven't cast your vote yet, it closes tonight. Don't wait too long!
  18. Put me down for those blue eyed girls!
  19. Do you remember what type of clownfish, Kim? There are a lot fewer clown species compatible with carpets than, say, bubble-tips. I'm wondering if it was one that is purportedly hosted by carpets? Even if it isn't one that carpets host though, I am surprised that it got caught in it! Although...I've read and also observed clowns "introducing" themselves to anemones before jumping in. The theory is that either the clowns have to acclimate slowly to that anemone's nematocytes, or the anemone has to get used to that clown's protective "slime." Maybe the black clown hadn't had a chance to acclimate.
  20. Need to get these gone. New prices OR trade for bubble tip or mini-maxi anemones: Plate--$30 Montipora--$25 Rock flower anemone--$25 I'm in SW Portland, and I'll be at the meeting on Sunday.
  21. Yes, there is a lot of risk that goes along with carpets. I don't have any fish in that tank right now. Adding clownfish will be safe of course, but the rest will be touch-and-go. No gobies, blennies, and needless to say I won't be adding gem tangs and candy basslets anytime soon!
  22. This beauty is just settling into my main display. He's well over 12 inches and has amazing coloration--great healthy specimen from Cuttle Fish and Corals. Thank you, Jeff!
