It's on my 210 with 40 gal sump. A bit overkill but I have 4 decent sized tangs amongst the other fish. Have an avast swabbie on it so never worry about cleaning it
The beast:
Did the same as well. I would put them in a bucket with some hydrogen peroxide beforehand also, helps them not to stink so bad between loads and also breaks down the organics too. I just used a cup or so and would squirt a little more on the pile as I added more.
Diy is where it's at for small tanks like that. I whipped up a single channel 20 led unit for under $40. PM me if you're looking for ideas on smaller diy units.

Mine is a DC12000 and theclark has it now to use on his massive skimmer
Nice looking prototype though, what printer did you use?
Unfortunately the thread with all this got lost but my best wheel pulled 85 or 90 SCFH
Bubble Mag curve series are really nice and super quite, was very pleased with mine (great pricing on them too). I have a RO Elite now, pulls like a train!
I would do your research and find whatever draws the most air and has a nice design. Cone skimmers are more efficient so I'd look at those mostly. As most have said, BubbleBlaster pumps are great and pull some serious air with minimum power draw.
I dose, forget the amount as I just had it set initially and just adjust my doser as needed. When I was reading into it I found someone said do like 10% vinegar with the rest vodka. That's what I do. I took my bio pellets out a few weeks ago. As Brad said, a good skimmer is needed. I use a RO Elite 220 now and it's much better for the task and bioload than others I've used.
Overall I never crashed the tank when I started, just take things easy as everything else in this hobby and the adjustment phase will be painless.
A lot is going to depend on the tap water, but good rule of thumb is new filters every six months. I always just do my DI at the same time. I've had the same membrane for years lol...probably overdue but works fine for now. Tds meters are like $15 which can help you monitor when it's time to swap your filters out. My pre filters don't turn brown at all so I'd say you def need some new ones!
What doesn't make sense to me is if it's illegal to have one now, is someone supposedly going to come "confiscate" them
from us? Taking a bunch of corals from peoples tanks is going to likely extinct the species faster than what's happening now. If they take them are they going to transplant into the ocean? Doubtful if it even makes it alive that far! I'm hoping all the baller reefers counter this somehow. I don't mind limiting imports of certain corals but no way is anyone taking mine!
Oh and F*** BP for causing a majority of this mess!
How long have you used your current one? Membranes don't go bad very fast. Also, filters don't have to be name brand, most are pretty cheap on eBay. A full filter swap should only be like 40-60 for 1 sed, 2x carbon blocks, and DI resin.
I use an ATC one and it works great. I tried a supposedly calibrated floating hydrometer (forget the name, glass ones) and it was off by like .005 or so. Stopped using hydrometers years ago, they are all over the place. Saving up for the green Milwakie digital one, so nice and easy and accurate.
Welcome! Which school do you teach at? If you need a hand, there are many members here in the Couve that can help out. Post some pics up of the tanks so we can check them out.
If you have some coral ready tanks I'd be happy to provide some beginner/easy corals to add to your tanks.
