  1. There are lots of reasons to try one...these threads are usually a lovefest for apex with a few nay sayers mixed in to keep it real..maybe it's long term, or maybe it's just checking it off the bucket list, but every serious reefer should at least see if they like the platform for managing a reef. There are ways of backing up backups with backups...Even if you don't like it, at least you can say you tried it! lol.
  2. No definitely not necessary IMO. I run one, but in all honesty I don't use 99% of the features. After the Apex went blue screen and left me holding my $#%$ I decided relying on a computer to run my biological world may not be the best idea.
  3. sold. Probably 6.5"wide x 4" front to back. 30ish branches/branchoffs Great shape! Beautiful color...l just dont have the right spot for it in my tank. carpy iPhone pics.
  4. Isn't it a fairly new tank? I would think bacterial bloom as well...lots of new light, and fuel for growth...and yeah, definitely check the alk, Ca...Those in check do wonders for clarity on a mature tank.
  5. As much as I like my Hanna for coolness...I get 100 tests out of my ol salifert, and I guarantee I can do the salifert test faster than the Hanna checker. READY SET GO.
  6. U can also use a turkey baster and some sort of measuring cup...dollar store stuff...and would work in the meantime.
  7. Public forum's are always going to be mixed with troll's and facts...it's up to individuals to make intelligent decisions. You are bringing a new innovative product to a well established market with some very knowledgeable people...and some not so knowledgeable people who will always try to tear you down. If you think your product can do the talking, then walk. But it may be wiser to have some experienced reefers test your product to give some honest feedback. If you are not willing to do that, well then you are basically going to have to back it up some other way than hiring pretty models to pose with your skimmer.
  8. Nice looking little tank! Garage tanks are great during the winter, but come summer time you'll have to find a way to keep the temps down for a few weeks.
  9. Hahahaha, there are easier ways to get youtube likes brad. Hot potato with the fire urchin...instant classic
  10. Yes. He was too big and poisonous for fishboys tank, so i adopted him:)
  11. Picked up some really cool new inverts...a double star and a red long spine urchin.i may regret the urchin, but at least he'llbe easy to catch if it doesnt work out
  12. Plain old carbon will remove any chlorine if he used tap. I wouldnt do vinegar or vodka...no need to overcomplicate...water changes will help alot...and the hair algae will be chowed by a clean up crew. Most people overreact when then tank semi crashes, and things get worse before they get better. Your tank doesn't look too bad, I have seen much worse. And the fact that your fish are still alive tells me that if he did use tap, he didnt use much. Just have a local shop do a battery of tests, but your tank will recover in 1-2 weeks judging by the pictures. Reefing is this way...disaster management...and recovery management. And now you know next time to ask someone with experience, or someone who actually loves animals enough to follow detailed instructions.
  13. Don't bleach the rocks. Start with a Water change 50%, siphon out as much algae as you can. add a large cleanup crew, and start the rebuilding process. Also, add some carbon...and start testing the water....I'm guessing your friend just grossly overfed the tank.
  14. Anyone know where i can buy fluke tabs...locally, or online?
  15. Bump... cube tank still still available...drop to $120 with stand! Will throw in the xwave wave maker. Also some great rock available too!
  16. 9.6 dKh and it drops to about 8.6 over 24 hrs.
  17. Im definitely partial to cubes...24" cube tank makes for a really nice display.
  18. Dose should be the same every day. The goal is consistency and stability. You may have to once a month or every few months adjust it slightly by adding a little more Calcium or Alk. Hand dosing is a daily ritual...when I feed the fish, I dose. so once a day, I spend 15 minutes with my reef. Oftentimes with a busy schedule, it's all the time I get with the tank! But you have to be diligent...missing a day isnt a huge deal, but things get compounded if you miss days...you have to make up for it! If you cannot remember to do it every day, seriously figure out a way to hook a Ca reactor up!
  19. Yes, the Calcium you mix with the water...RODI water. I would mix it in a separate container though as it gets surprisingly hot and will warp thin plastic over time. Many advantages to dosing...the reason I don't run a reactor is because of space in my sump...which is a real issue for most reefers. Another advantage to the DIY guys/gals is the cost factor... If I buy 6 gallons worth of Leslies, here is what it will cost and how long it'll last. Cost for 6 gallons of dry mix=$66 thats 96 cups which makes 48 GALLONS of dosing solution. A gallon lasts me for 120 gallon SPS reef one month. So, for $66, I have 4 years worth of Calcium
  20. Why 4" below? Is the tank predrilled? Some loc-line arced upward will help... Relying on check valves is just...well...avoid it if you can! Lots of failures...and very easy to avoid. For the T, you dont have to move your pump, just try to get each return line back to the tank as close to the same length as possible. Im no plumbing expert, hopefully someone else will chime in...mattv always told me to get these as close to the same length as possible...for previously stated reasons.
  21. Yeah i forgot to mention i bake the baking soda for about an hour@400deg before mixing...this drives off excess co2. This is necessary for people who have low pH...most of us. Baking soda raises Alk...yes
  22. That better not be an original star wars poster above the sump;) Tank looks amazing roy.
