  1. that seems really high, especially if you are using NE portland water. My tank usually peaks around 8.30 or 8.31. I believe they say that you don't want it over 8.5. It is definitely caused by your limewater additions. Like anything reef chemistry... it has already been addressed by randy holmes farley. That guy is a GOD!! http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-03/rhf/
  2. I did a little reading about it last night, it seems that people that had difficulty had really low nutrients. I would put your numbers in the really low category. Phos is fine but nitrates at 2, they could be cause for concern if you decide to go the vibrant route. I never used it more than two weeks. maybe 3, would have to dig through my notes. as such, I didn't see a drop in nitrates or phos like some people do. I kind of wish that I did. 3. what are you N and Phos readings? Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  4. It is a rather tough question as my tank was newer and the sps I had in there... maybe 8 frags were there for about a month so not exactly settled in and thriving. I did not loose a single sps, not did I see any really changes in terms of coloration or poly extension. if you want to borrow my "bubble algae 2000 extractor" you can. it's a 1/4 rubber tube and a plastic rod with a spike tapped to it. it's fun, you start a siphon then pop algae. then the algae plugs the tube. then you pull the tube out of the tank and get water everywhere, blow the algae out and then start over. it works best over carpeting or while wearing a dress shirt. 5. I can maybe help as I have a ton of router bits and a router table. However, in order to find out if I can help I need to know how much material you need to take off. Meaning, how far from the existing hole edge will you need to cut in order to counter sink the woofer. also.. what is the thickness of the wood you are working with? The bit has a bearing on it but if the wood is too thin then there will be nothing for the bearing to follow when you lower the bit to cut the countersink? get it?? even if you don't, post up the measurements.. 6. Well, as it turns out we are going to have to put our beloved sharpei down so Dawn wanted a long horned box fish to takes its place. So Jeff hooked us up with a RSR 170. After leaking a bunch of water from a brittle pipe o ring on to the carpet and a trip to the hardware store, it is up and running. It even has an arch!!! Because what small reef tank is complete without an arch? As a completely obsessive aquascape guy it was frustrating working with a small space.. and it is not finished yet. For those that think it would be great to have a wife or gf that is in to reefing.. be careful what you wish for. This is basically how that goes down... "thanks baby, I am soo excited!!" "good, it will be fun" " I want the long horned box fish" "ok" " and a yellow spotted box fish" "ummmm... I could probably keep that alive" "and a puffer!!! can we get a puffer?" ummm..maybe a saddle back?" "ooh! and a neon dottyback, let's get a dottyback!!" "ummmm" "and let's get another wrassy...which wrassy should we get?" "hey, look at that clam!!! can we have a clam? just a small one, I love the clams!" "maybe we can take some coral from your tank?" errrrrrr... maybe? "what's that yellow and orange one, the fuzzy one...acid trip milli? I want that! STOP!!! Honey, I love you, and I love to see you happy but if you even look at my acid trip milli I will end you. soo.. yeah we are going to have a 40 gallon tank with the following: LH box fish spotted box fish valentini puffer dottyback pair of clowns tail spot blenny lawn mower blenny shrimp watchman gobby clam emerald crabs green star polyps montipora frags and a "bunch of wrasses". sooo...stayed turned for that. sigh.... 7. what mixed reviews? There is a Looong thread on r2r and I would say that 80% of the responses are utter amazement, 10% are yeah I tried one dose and nothing happened and the other 10% are from people that had no real idea what the hell they are doing. My experience: my tank was pretty new and I was going through the normal roller coaster of nitrate and phos readings. I started to have algae problems.. lots of pictures shown to jeff and jorge.. hmmmm, looks a little like a hair/dino/slime thing with scattered bubble algae. I did water changes, siphoned, I even scrubbed the rocks with a a sonicare toothbrush. Spent $90 on massive clean up crew... not much happened. Nothing really helped. I am a professional biologist and I am quite weary of solutions in a bottle. After reading quite a bit about vibrant and calling them to talk about it I found out it is basically a bacteria that feeds on the proteins of algae. Added one dose at recommended rate, day 4 or 5 I added another dose. Hmmm, it is kind of working. Added a third dose a week later. I got busy, and came back to give a good look a week later. wow!! where did the algae go? It was A M A Z I N G. My nitrates went up a little and then dropped. Nothing too drastic to upset sps though. It did shrink my chaeto by 50% though and stalled its growth for about 2-3 weeks. I think the is where the nutrient bump came from. My wife's freshwater puffy tank was basically a cess pool. 5 gallon with some loaches and puffer fish that eat around 10 snails each a day. I added vibrant for 2 weeks, the tank was sparkling. I don't know what is in the bottle (I do know it is NOT carbon to increase bacteria counts) but it works. it works well actually. Jeff had some that he was adding to some tank in the shop, ask him what he thought. But for me, it is definately, 100% an effective tool against algae outbreaks. if you want a couple doses to try and talk fish I live in SW pdx about 10 min from cuttlefish. shoot me a pm. 9. I was completely joking!! I have just been on this trash neptune kick lately because they can't seem to get the trident to market. I mean, its only been a YEAR. One guy can hire some people and get the alkatronic all sorted out, brought to market and sold out but yet neptune can't get a reliable source for titration tips?? Anyways, 3d printers are super cool and this project is also cool. If i had more time I would definitely be playing with one!
  10. I have done that to break siphons before. If your hose travels above the water level in your top off then it will absolutely work. In rubber hose, make sure the hole is big enough that it doesnt close up on you. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  11. did that make sense?? Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  12. interesting for sure but I know nothing about it. would be interested in buying some phyto from you if it's up and running and you have excess. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  13. $400 is a very great price...it is just that I am not a drug dealer anymore :( now I have to sell body parts. Anyone know someone with a killer sps tank and a failing kidney? type o- FFR. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  14. At this production rate you should go to work for neptune.. LMAO Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  15. it was a really common belief for quite some time but silicone is hydrophobic and pretty chemically neutral when cured so as others have said, as long as you wipe it down you will be fine. you could always throw a bag of cuprizorb in there is you were worried about it. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  16. You should be fine after copper treatment to use for inverts and corals. Just clean it out well. The copper tainted tank is largely an aquarium myth hold over. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/reusing-a-tank-after-copper-treatment.282827/
  17. What 503 doesn't know is that it is going to be a "jason faox" style frag. So basically a clump of hair glued to a plug. See....see how that got through the language filters
  18. jeff has some fire right now... how about winner gets a 30' long aquarium on a trailer?? Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

  21. yes and no. It has been around for awhile but it is a pretty coveted coral and it grows painfully slow. The slow growth makes it harder to come by. Jeff has a colony that is a little smaller than a fist and was asking around $400. It is a beautiful rich blue color. Probably the bluest coral out there. My tank has finally really settled in and things are growing so I have been on the look out for one. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
