  1. George is good for the odd part not stocked by the big box stores . I have had issue time to time with communication with the employees who have no imagination when it comes to non traditional plumbing. Like when they told me there was no reason to partially close a drain it either needed to be open or closed not in between I was trying to track down a small true union gate valve but all they had at the time was ball valves which I did not want none the less they are a good resource.
  2. The salt was just going to be in very small doses more for the trace elements than anything else the buffering will come from another source. I have large bag of live rock rubble that I was going to use as biological filter media. I will also shoot you a PM =)
  3. I was actually going to experiment with using Kent reef salt and buffering with some Kalkwasser water sense I have a container collecting dust on a shelf and no shortage of reef salt handy. I would most definitely be interested in the canister filter. I will also check out southeast cichlids. Your tanks looked great. I was also going to hit up wetspot over in Portland on Hancock. 4. If this is the route you want to go 40 breeder with a 20long sump is an excellent combination and really a lows you to open up stocking and filtration that otherwise would be unavailable. You can fit a rather large skimmer in a 20 long sump. The ghost over flows from synergy reef are really slick and save a ton of real-estate in your tank and can be run dead silent. AIO are great for Nanos 20 and under but any bigger than that and they limited filtration options to much. Cad lights also has a pretty sweet 50 set up that is worth checking out artisan2. Good luck with the upgrade and looking forward to seeing what you do =) Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
  5. You might want to mix another batch of water for another water Chang and then test it and see if pH is out of wacky or high alk. Might have shocked the system with the last water change. And if everything checks out it wouldn't hurt to do an extra water change. The solution to pollution is dilution. Sorry to here about your losses and know things will turn around for ya =) Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
  6. I am planning on doing Pseudotropheus Saulosi. I collected some rock from the Santiam. And have just about everything I think I will need more filtration though thinking about adding a aqua clear or a small canister to go with the emperor 400. Was also thinking about some t5s to really highlight the fish. Right now I have a small t8 and a couple of led stunner strips but it does not cover very well. 7. Another advantage of dosing daily by hand is the extra time you spend with your aquarium the more likely you are to notice suttle changes and be able to react to stressed fish stung corals and such more quickly. I am a firm believer in daily tank interactions and to much automation can cause complacency. Not that automation. Is a bad thing just my personal opinions =) Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
  8. Hey I know we have some fresh water guys on here. Just wanted to reach out and see if there are any Mbuna keepers on here. I am setting up a 40breeder to do a species tank. Also trying to find some local breeders around salem. I know wet spot in Portland is a great source for cichlids but who else? Thanks Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
  9. You could add a siphon break to the return line inside the tank just below the water surface as well as add a check valve to the return line. Getting a union check valve is highly recommended and then make sure that you remove it and clean it from time to time to ensure it is functioning properly. Also run some power outage tests and then see how much back flow you get when the power goes out.
  10. You know Roy always sportin a bare bottom
  11. Update things are looking great coral are growing and fish are happy. Yesterday during my weekly water change I did some extra cleaning removed the rock and stirred the sand up before syphoning out the water. When I put the rock in I changed things around and moved some things and makes the tank feel bigger gives the fish more open space to swim. I also added a rack to hold some filter floss. Got tired of all the free floating particular mater. Check it out and tell me what you think. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
  12. Had some requests for more pictures. So here you go as you can see this is just over 20 pounds looks like 23 pounds of rock. Some nice pieces would fully stock a 20 long or a 29 bio cube. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
  13. I have 20 pounds of Fuji rock purchased dry from brs and has been curing in a 5 gal bucket with a power head for 3 months . When I change my tank water I change the water in the bucket this is fully cured ready to go live rock. This rock is pest and algae free. No coral in growth as it has no light on it. I live in the salem area just 10 min from TPA. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
  14. Got Some fresh water gear for an African Cichlid tank =)
  15. At this point the only thing I do weekly is water changes. So I am checking Salinity 1 per week. Once a month I test for Nitrate and Phosphate with RedSea kits. My tank is nothing fancy and I don' dose anything so I am employing the K.I.S.S. method of reefing =)
  16. Make sure that you are not dosing anything that you are not also testing for especially the reef builders Alk Cal Mag. =)
  17. I only have a nano skimmer but i keep a toothbrush for my reef and have found that cleaning the skimmer neck makes a huge difference +1 I do also run small amount of gfo in the form of chemipure elite. I think no mater what you do to combat it that you need to listen to your tank and monitor parameters stripping phosphates from the water to quickly is really hard on your corals as well. Also should mention take care if running in a reactor with carbon as I have had it pulverize the carbon into dust when i mixed the 2 together in the same chamber.
  18. That looks great ! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
  19. We need to see a larger sample size =) Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
  20. It had no affect on zoas. It does work great on cloves and xenia and gsp. It can also be hard on leathers but my toadstool took it like a champ Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
  21. Forced compliance is an option for all pest removal. it is just a mater of how persistent you are and how much time and effort you are willing to commit. Yes fluke tabs are hard on the snails I removed mine before treatment. I also remove the gsp and leathers from my system during treatment. I also was diligent about removal as the in my case cloves were dying i was removing them from the system and followed up after treatment with more frequent and larger water changes. I did all this with a large SPS population in my system and did not loose a single one. Not matter what route you take there is no easy answer. Well except not adding them in the first place but that is hind site and you can only work with what you have. =) Good Luck
  22. Fluke tabs work they also get rid of blue cloves and gsp
  23. I want a Blue Tubbs Please and thank you =)
