  1. We got to experience Dermabond for the first time this week. Baby Sascha is a daredevil. Probably won't be our last ER visit... Gillian
  2. We picked up some live rock over the weekend that we're going to use in our 90G. For now, it's sitting in a large Rubbermaid in the basement with a powerhead for circulation. The rock has a bunch of macro algae growing on it...and some bubble algae. When I got it home, I spent some time picking off as much as I could before I stuck it in the storage tank. I'm wondering what's the best way to get rid of the rest of it before we try to put it in the tank. The tub doesn't have a light, so my first thought is that it might all starve from lack of light if I leave it in there long enough. Not sure how long that would be. I also thought of adding some snails and emerald crabs to the tub. Since the tank isn't plumbed yet, we have some time. However, I'm anxious to get going, of course! Advice? Thanks! Gillian
  3. knew it!! want a sunpod for that solana?
  4. WTS: Zoas and Paly Extravaganza Hey, can I get a frag of African blues and the bam bams? Shhhh don't tell Gillian
  5. Hey, I wanted to throw some pictures up of the pico I've been working on. I had originally gotten a bigger tank but found that it was too big for the bedside stand, so it's happily moved on to the Grassi house. I found a smaller AIO from PicO Aquariums, which is a one guy operation out of Chicago. The display is 2.3g and the sump area is 1.2g. Total dimensions are 12x9x8. Current equipment: -Rio 400 return pump -25W heater -Filter floss Current livestock: -A couple of rocks... aka the smallest pieces I could find from the 12g and 34g tanks. -Sand.. Nature's Ocean or something? Plans: -LED light fixture: 4 3W royal blue Cree XR-Es & 4 3W white Q5 XR-Es on 2 dimmable 1000mA buckpucks on a 9x6" heatsink. Just finished drilling & tapping for the mount yesterday. Now I just need to mount the LEDs and start some soldering action... once the babysitter gets here! LOL -refugium in middle chamber -carbon -some zoas, maybe a bright acan or two, a tiny head of torch -considering a yellow clown goby if I decide to add fish -some stomatellas from the solana -shrimp... undecided as to type Pics: (sorry they are iPhone pics right now) Here is the current FTS. Oh, the possibilities Tank started up on July 11. July 12 tests: Ammonia = 0 Nitrites = 0 Nitrates = 0 July 16 tests: Ammonia = 0.25 Nitrites = 0 Nitrates = 5-10
  6. Hey Beth, That would be a waste of money, unless you're looking for a nice big moonlight fixture. Even the softies would have a hard time with that light... 13.8W over 225 LEDs is way worse than a PC fixture from what I understand. There was a thread on NR about this or a similar fixture, and it sounds like the light *might* be able to grow algae but not much else... probably not optimal for your frag tank!! As for hanging it, you can mount LED fixtures pretty easily by drilling & tapping into them. I just finished drilling and tapping the heatsink for my pico yesterday (which mean the soldering fun begins today!!). Anyway, it's super easy and the most secure way to go. ALSO, if you're feeling crafty, build your own fixture. It's a fun project, and then you can make it however you want (B:W ratio, dimmability, etc). Whether you buy or build, stick with higher wattage LEDs.
  7. Alex, We know how to party. Sorry you missed it. Maybe next time. Speaking of which, the tank-drilling party will be even more awesome. (naughty) Who's in? It'll be BYOOS (bring your own oyster shots). Gillian & Kendra
  8. Only 7. And yes, I had to stop and count. Gillian For those of you who like to have more than 2 saltwater tanks you may also like having 10 other pets in your house.(laugh)
  9. Bump for price drop. Now $215.
  10. Come on friends, make me an offer!!
  11. Can someone clarify for me why the water changes are making the problem worse? Wouldn't they be (1) reducing the number of algae cells in the tank, and (2) improving water quality? It seems like both of those things would help contain the bloom. I'm not understanding this part of the explanation. (scratch) Thanks! Gillian
  12. Congratulations! Good sized babies for twins! Hope the whole family is enjoying the new arrivals. Gillian and Kendra

Heather, I know that diatomaceous earth is bird-safe. We've got a timneh grey. What kind of macaws do you have? Gillian

Our vet just prescribed Comfortis (spinosad). Does that work better than Advantage? Gillian
  15. That should work. It'll be a quiet evening over here since Kendra and the boys are going to a barbeque, but I'll be home working. Stop by whenever it's convenient. Do you remember the address? If you want to see the whole gang, any other night this week would probably work, too. It's not like we go places. And yes, they gave her augmentin. And I am now officially a dog person. Gillian
  16. Sorry for the delayed drawing this morning, folks. What is it about these drawings? We, too, had an urgent care visit this morning when Kendra got bitten rather badly by a cat. Anyway, Kendra managed to use her good hand to pick two winners out of a hat, and they were: Grassi Emerald525 I think Kim is rigging things somehow to feed her addiction whilst appearing to be in recovery. Anyway, let me know when you guys would like to drop by and pick up your Oyster Feast. Any time between now and late August (when it expires) is fine. Gillian
  17. that would be one bad*** fish...
  18. vs pug is still cuter.
  19. gillian just said to me, "can you find me a coral that looks like a pug?" me: "like... wrinkly?" gillian: "...because that would be perfect." i guess i should start googling.
  20. Kim, I think you've had enough shots of something already tonight. Gillian
