  1. Sigh. More football. Yawn. The Mariners are playing the Yankees Saturday. Go M's!! We're on a 2 game winning streak! And only second-to-last in the AL standings (yes Baltimore sucks more than we do). I <3 Ichiro. Will wear my jersey on Saturday.
  2. so is that a maxspect?
  3. Finally made it down to Garrett's, great guy, nice setup, and awesome stuff! I'm loving the frags we got there - very healthy. The baby sure loved playing in the sprinkler on his lawn, too. Also thanks to Beth, Kim & their puppy for the ride down there! Finally, a thanks to the Nano Reef for some illustrious black eggcrate and delicious baked goods! PS, wait til y'all see what we got from Sarcastic Corals!
  4. What is this? We are so lucky to have an expert like you on hand.
  5. Sounds like Eric might have already addressed this with you, but for others out there wondering something similar - if you give it a nudge, does it retract into a skeleton? I posted a similar picture on NR awhile ago and everyone said VERY definitively that what I had was a majano and to nuke it. Eventually I found some previous thread about distinguishing between majano and small plate corals... lo and behold, mine was actually just a small plate coral that would retract into it's skeleton if agitated (a majano doesn't have a skeleton). HTH
  6. That rainbow acan garden is siiiiick, ladies... it's got me craving skittles.
  7. Cool! Thanks so much for finding that; I didn't know the name. I have a rock with some:
  8. fun thread! these pics show some of my brightest:
  9. I did it! (clap) My 90G now has 4 neat holes in it, and I'm ready to start plumbing. It was easy! Thanks to Grassi for loaning us the bits! This is fun stuff! Gillian
  10. Note how tiny she is compared to the B & W clown. Cute, huh?
  11. Oh, she does cram herself into impossibly tight spots at night. Maybe she's scraped herself? Here's a photo:
  12. I don't think that's it- I don't see anything that looks like any sort of pitting. It's more subtle than that. It's kind of a whitish faded patch, almost kind of fuzzy looking. Kendra's trying to take a picture right now, but she's zipping all over the tank with the clowns. Gillian
  13. Our new baby tang has a small patch of something near her face. It's like a slightly faded patch on the part of her face that's black, over her eye. I'd snap a photo, but she swims too fast. At first, I thought she had a couple of damaged scales- perhaps from when she was bagged up or transported to our tank. Over the last couple of days, I've watched the patch get bigger, so I think it's probably either a bacterial infection or a fungal infection of some sort. She's eating well and seems very active. Aside from keeping a close eye on water parameters, what should we do for her? A google search suggested feeding less meaty food (she does love the mysis shrimp) and more nori, and adding garlic. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Gillian
  14. thanks for setting this up, kim! personally, i would suggest that the tickets be $10 for the first one, and $5 for each thereafter.
  15. yep, check out picoaquariums.com!!
  16. hey randy, can i get the "no ID SPS cool looking" frag?
  17. Thanks, everyone! Here are some pics of the build. Alex, I'm eventually going to see if i can build something with an arm off of the back so that you can see the rimless better, but I don't think I'll suspend it. Here is the sketch of what I had intended to do. The buckpucks have external potentiometers prewired to them that I didn't draw out, but that's how the lights dim: First I drilled and tapped the heatsink for the mounting screws: After cleaning the surfaces, I stuck the thermal adhesive pads on, and stuck the LED stars on those: This is out of focus, so you might not notice that I didn't stick them on like I had planned! DOH! This would not be realized until later, after I wired it: And then found that only half of both the blues and whites worked: (scratch) Went back to my sketch and realized my error, rewired, and... (clap) The good news is that my error gave me the opportunity to rewire everything, and I was much better at soldering by that point!! The bad news is that if I had taken the time to drill & tap for the LED stars, I could have changed their orientation more easily, but I used the adhesive pads... so they are ON there (for real). But it's not the biggest deal, just a little extra wire. Updates on the tank cycle... colors were a little different in person, so trust me on the numbers! Also, I had added some fresh shrimp: July 23: Ammonia ~ 1.0 Nitrite ~ 0.25 Nitrate = 10-20 July 28: Ammonia = 0-0.25 Nitrite = 0 Nitrate = 20+
  18. That looks like a pocketful of trouble! I love puppies. You got yourselves a cute one. Play date??? Gillian
  19. Still have it! If it's not gone by Saturday, I'll have it in my car at the meeting for all you impulse shoppers...
  20. hey eric, we have your full moons! they are glued to a rock right now, but they might not have grown onto the rock yet so i can see if i can pop them off and get a frag for you. i fragged them once before for the share the love but they've grown some since then too. hope all is well with the baby!
  21. That's about what our rock looked like when we "adopted" our first tank earlier this year. We did regular water changes with RO/DI water, added to the cleanup crew, and everything started looking much better within a couple of weeks. We are newbies, too, but if it were me, I wouldn't do anything drastic. Gillian
  22. Congratulations! Two boys = a ton of fun and a fair amount of property damage, but it's worth it. Gillian
  23. My light works!!! It really works! (clap) And holy cow, it's bright. (rock2) The layout is 4x2: BWBW WBWB Heatsink stayed perfectly cool after a couple of hours of intro time last night. I didn't install any fans because I was hoping that the sheer size of the heatsink would be enough to dissipate the heat. Looking good so far. I can post pics of the build too if anyone is interested. They're just iPhone pics but are a good accounting of all of my missteps, ha ha. DOH! New FTS, blue at ~40%, white at ~30%: Lights w/blue at 100%, white at 0% White at 100%, blue at 0%: Both at 100%: Pico-licious: Yeah, I have fingerprints all over the glass top and the acrylic shield... I'll clean that up! Today's project is getting some heat shrink and cleaning up all the wiring. This is just my first pico. I've done a lot of reading, and there are some great resources at nano-reef.com under their pico reef subforum. I found that one of the best ways to learn is to read other people's tank threads to see their successes and failures. As for do's and don'ts... well, you can imagine that it is hard to keep them stable so you have to be careful with everything that goes along with that - eg not overfeeding, not overstocking, doing frequent water changes, etc. I'm going to build an ATO to help keep the salinity more stable, although I admit that topping off twice a day isn't the hardest thing in the world. Also have to be careful about the CUC you choose because you don't want ones that produce too much waste, or ones that will starve. Wish me luck!!
