  1. LOL! Love that photo of the jawfish! I also keep a nano tank. I actually haven't run into any of the instability problems that most folks do. The key for me was a sump and an auto-top off. I do regular water changes and keep the bio-load light. With the exception of the new tank syndrome at the beginning, I haven't had a problem. I think it all comes down to common sense. Don't put lots and lots of big fish in a tiny tank, and take all the steps to be sure that there aren't huge swings in your chemistry. You'll do great! I can't wait for a tank build thread!
  2. let me know what you come up with. I'm in the Portland area often, could bounce up to Vancouver for a bit. :-)
  3. *tear* our guest speaker would be so proud of your pillar of rock. It looks great!
  4. WOW!! So when I do a FW planted tank again, I know who I'm calling! I love your little borneo sucker in the jungle tank. They're so cute!
  5. I have this problem too. My rock-work consists mostly of 2 large caribbean pieces that have some flat smooth surfaces that zoas LOVE to colonize. What I've started to do is put a tiny dab of super glue on a couple piece of LR rubble and glue them around where I want to colonies to end. My plan is to let the zoas grow over the rubble, then pull it off, X-acto the connecting tissue, and BINGO! A frag! All while limiting the growth of my zoa colonies.
  6. Hey Guys! I've decided to start up a 5 gallon pico in the near future and am looking for a few supplies. Here's the list, let me know if you're looking to sell any of these and what you'd like to get for them..... -5 gal AGA -black or gray sand (ideally from an established tank, just a couple lbs. enough for a 2" sand bed) -LR rubble -12" PC light/fixture -aqua clear 70 power filter Thanks for looking!
  7. I'm so going to re-scape my tank too! I just have to get some PVC to build one of the little stands that Scott was showing us. It'll be great!
  8. I hear ya! Thankfully, the only ones around to complain are my dogs, and they are easily bought with rawhides. I just made appropriate sleep hours even more difficult since I changed my lights to coming on at 5PM and off at 2AM. I'm never home during the day or in the early mornings, so if I ever want to see the tank lit up, this is the only way. Plus my house isn't temp controlled, so this will eliminate the extra heat from the lights during the mid afternoon sun during the summer. *sigh* just makes it hard to decide to sleep instead of tank-watch.
  9. ok, this is freaking cool. Congrats on the "catch of the day."
  10. Thank you so much for such a great meeting guys. This was my first one and I had a blast. I went home with some fantastic corals from Roy, Dennis, and Garrett. Guys, thank you SO much. They are all beautiful! I'll have pictures soon. Unfortunately I also released a diamond goby into the tank when I put the new corals in and he has made a royal sand storm of the place. When he settles down and the cloud clears I'll break out the camera. Scott, thank you for a great presentation! I am now committed to re-working my aquascaping instead of just saying "well, I guess it'll have to do." With some of your tips (cable ties and PVC) I know that I can make this work. What a great experience. I am thoroughly looking forward to the next one!
  11. I've been looking for a good excuse to start a little 5 gallon pico hex with a few zoas and a goby-shrimp pair. I want to put a little tower of LR right in the middle, grow some zoas and maybe a few ricordia around and on it, and then have the goby-shrimp pair in there.....hopefully view-able from all sides.
  12. I heart symbiotic shrimp goby relationships!! Perhaps I need to start a 5 gal pico just to have this goby and a shrimp-type friend.
  13. You know, I liked this goby when I saw his picture......now that I know he's a celebrity, maybe I really do need one! Just out of curiosity, are they sand sifters? Algae eaters? What is their little niche in the world?
  14. I remember the last big storm like this that happened like 2 years ago. My tanks all crashed because we were without power for 4 days. Thankfully they were just FW so the cost wasn't too heavy. But my best friend's truck ended up with a HUGE tree right in the middle of the roof. Totalled the car, but left the house unscathed!
  15. I'm so sorry to hear about this Dennis. My deepest condolences. When the time is right and your family is ready for a new friend, I would be happy to help you find the right dog. I train professionally here in Philomath, as well as compete with all 3 of my dogs. I know you don't know me, but I'd really like to help when you guys are ready.
  16. Didn't like the sunrise/sunset....it was way dark. However, the polyps were gorgeous! What detail! I bet his camera equipment cost more than my car.....
  17. Is there any interest in some cinnamon palys? whole bunch of them, like 10+ polyps? I think them alot, but I just would rather put something more colorful in my limited real estate. Got these from Garrett when he broke down his tanks. I'll check this thread in the morning and bring them if anyone might be interested.
  18. has this little fungia found a home? If no, there's a special spot in my tank just for him!
  19. I am so bad about this! I was raised in a house that had very little money, so it was all about the best deal and not so much about supporting local. On the occasion I still catch myself saying "dude, I could get that so much cheaper online." I appreciate the reminder that its important to support the stores that I care so much about.
  20. I've never been a fan, even in FW. After breaking down many people's FW tanks to revamp for various purposes, I saw some of the crap that gets trapped down there on a regular basis. I shudder to think what sludge like that would do to the water chemistry in a SW tank where the critters are so much more sensitive.
  21. I'll be there, and I'm bringing a friend who wants to get into saltwater......be nice to her guys.....she spooks easy. LOL
  22. I also used red slime remover. That stuff had almost taken over my whole tank. It was insane. One tiny tiny little scoop of red slime remover and it sloughed off in 2 days. Then a big water change removed it all completely....haven't seen any since. Yay!
  23. Would the sugar method work in my tank considering that I don't run a skimmer at all? I just rely on good tank maintenance and a low bioload. That being said, I do have a couple of spots of green hair algae that I would LOVE to get cleaned up. Maybe just some more inverts? My clean up crew is a little light.....
