  1. Dripping your kalkwasser at night helps too My pH runs like this without kalk (on average) actinic on=7.85 late morning=8.2 afternoon=8.45 actinic off=8.3 with 2gallon drip of kalk started for the night just before I leave (about 30 min before lights out) lights on=8-8.15 late morning=8.25-8.3 afternoon=8.45 actinics off=8.35 peak durring kalk drip=8.56 (ussually about 8.45 though) and thats just 2 gallons dripped slowly into a 60 gallon tank, it takes about 3 hours to drip out
  2. having aragonite helps a little, but you'll still see swings similar to H2OCooled, at least I always have
  3. you might want to set up another tub and just put that rock in there with heat, pump, and saltwater, along with a few small rocks of the fresher stuff, to get it all cycled, just in case it has organics soaked up in the rock. You wouldn't want all that coming out and killing off the stuff in the new system
  4. I'm going to have to pass on the sand and all frags I had offered for a bit, the red bugs are taking over my tank now :-(
  5. "On a per capita basis, Australia is the world's biggest generator of greenhouse gases, while the US is the biggest polluter overall." Very interesting, and most of us see australia as a "clean & green" country
  6. and the scuba diver in the back ground gave away the whole ocean thing
  7. I thought this was interesting "Recently it has emerged that fierce sunlight can also cause corals to bleach and die, even when sea water temperatures are cool. " maybe the added UV radiation from having a whole in the ozone layer has an effect also
  8. I'll take a chunk off tomorrow for ya, see you at the meeting
  9. Just let me know how much you want, the main colony is bigger than my fist now, I could get you a golf ball size chunk off for the next meeting, they usually end up as two heads after they are mounted its nice and doesn't spread over a whole tank like other xenias do
  10. Thanks, I've usually got some nice giant bali xenia and mushrooms i'll give out for free, if your looking for something for the tank, some of the "less desireable zoos" too... And stomatellas to start breeding populations, as well as tiny live shrimp for food, they reproduce like crazy in my overflow and sump and fish love em as a treat
  11. STUPID CANADIANS THINK THEY OWN EVERYTHING!!! Don't they know they are dealing with America here?! (whistle)
  12. Just a few pics, don't flame me because I'l crazy! (nutty) (nutty) (nutty) 55 gallon, no light, in front of a east facing window, manly a fish and LR holding tank and mangrove growing tank (they are still babies), but there is a TINY little montipora in there, its grown from a sliver about 1/2 inch wide in december to 1 inch wide now Close up of that little monti cap bit My newest fish being help for observation on the first day
  13. you wouldn't get so many pods, but you would get some nice bacteria that would really give the cycle a boost, and some nice starts to things that might just show up after the rock cycles. I've got tons of love for the noobs, it helps that some of my favorite corals are the easy ones that grow like weeds because i amost always have frags to give away too! (as well as foods, inverts and sponges, since i'm a hitch-hicker sponge fan). How far along is your tank anyway?
  14. looks almost like Neospongodes, it also looks like a Lemnalia, both are closely related looks alot like the coral on the top-right in the picture on this page in garf... http://www.garf.org/lemn02/1000neo.html
  15. I see them around the shells of my clams on occasion, but i think thats more because they are on the sand and my chitons are always just under the sands surface, not because they are after the clam
  16. both ballasts are 175s, but are they the same type of 175? electronic/magnetic/pulse start/probe start? are the bulbs the same brand and color tempurature?
  17. I don't think you can view them later, I like pms better because you can save the ones you need to keep
  18. Ew, he doesn't look like he has many teeth there either
  19. dsoz, I have two tanks, with different types of rock so most likely some different stuff living in each, I can bring a cup from each to cover ya
  20. I think wild collection of them should be controlled, they are pretty hard fish to keep happy when they are from wild sources, but who knows how much of that is just from the collection
  21. shoot, too bad I just bought one 2 weeks ago at full price!
  22. I like the blenny more, they have an interesting personality, and they will stick around after the algae is gone, the seahare can't
  23. Steve tyree has done a bunch of research on these, and from what I understand they aren't really "nutrient sinks", but they actually break down the organics (nitrates) into energy, much like we do sugar, and tissues. I would remove any that die off, but when it comes to sponges its really the more the merrier, and they grow too slow to respond well to much harvesting
  24. Hey Tammy, if you're ever up in portland I've got TONS
  25. That is a sweet tank, good luck with the hair algae, if you are interested in them lawnmower blennies eat through most hair pretty quick and they have great personalities. They'll mow it down and turn it into... well poop, and your skimmer will suck that out quick
