  1. Wow I haven't been on here in over a year and I still have the 24 gallon Aquapod up and running. I'll post more details about the changes (and there have been many) since this last post soon. Might even be better to start a new thread or something...
  2. Hey Miles! Long time no see! I ended up getting an MP 20for my little nano and love playing with it.
  3. Hey guys, Here's the scoop so far. I've decided to go for it and add a bigger refugium to the nano reef. I've ordered an acrylic 18 gallon tank drilled with a couple of holes at the top. Reef-Fisher, I kinda like the idea of keeping the display tank small and just adding a second tank to it. Maybe it's just the reef geek in me. The new refugium will be lit by the same PC fixture now hanging over the mangrove . Hopefully if it turns out the way I have it imagined, the two pieces of tubing between the tanks will be somewhat unnoticed. The refugium tank will actually sit somwhat higher than the display tank on a bookshelf next to the display. Actually the shelf is a few inches shorter than the top of the display but the top of the 18 gallon will be at least a foot higher, allowing me to use gravity. IN other words, my display will act as a sort of sump. Another added benefit to the new refugium sitting on the bookshelf is that it'll be closer to eye level. Right now the hang on the back refugium doesn't allow me any kind of view back there so I can't see what's going on in it. This way, I'll get to check out what's growing and also keep something cool in it. I'm considering a reef lobster of some kind. We'll see. The tank ships out tomorrow and should be here next week. I'll try to take pics of the set up and post them.
  4. Here's a pic of the mangrove nowadays. It measures it measures about 30 inches tall and around a foot wide:
  5. It's been a while since I've posted an update on the tank so here's a brief update: -It's going on a year since I set it up and it's doing great. - The tank still houses most of the original corals with the exception of the bubble coral and of course I've added some. - I upgraded the flow to to about a total of 700 gph (300 from a MaxiJet 1200 and a 400 gph additional powerhead) -I took off the Hydor Flo because I found that it clogged frequently and for some reason my snails loved to crawl behind the part that turns and wedge there so that it stopped turning. Go figure. Overall the flow is actually better because of the removal. - The mangrove is getting kinda big. Too big for the hang on the back refugium in my opinion. It's still growing so I don't think it's quite "root bound" yet but I'd like to start planning on something. Any suggestions? I've beend toying with the idea of putting in a refugium beside the tank (there's no way I'd squeeze a sump in that stand and I'd like to display the mangrove anyway). The trick is of course how to get the water down there. Are there overflows small enough? I wouldn't need much flow to go through it. I also thought about just getting a bigger hang on the back refugium but there aren't any substantially bigger that will fit on there. I don't think. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
  6. Well there's this one that just says "Chief". Who does this guy think he is?
  7. That's cool, can I ask, when did you graduate?
  8. Yeah having a tank with soft corals in general is like a battle royale. I was listening to a talk by Anthony Calfo in which he calls these kinds of tank "Toxic soup tanks". He said people get away with it because of water changes and skimming. I did defintely worry about the thing wandering around stinging everthing but I figured I'd keep an eagle eye on it and we'll see what happens.
  9. Wow no way. I'll give it a few days but I am curious to try the pic idea. To update the situation, The anemone migrated to a slightly different area and very close to a baby leather coral. What I did was detach the leather which sucked but the anemone was more important to me. I will try to get the baby leather to attach to a small rock so I can move where I want to. Actually where the anemone is now is a pretty cool spot. I hope it's decided to stay there! The color of it isn't all that impressive, it's a kind of tan color with a very little hint of green. I have it under halides so hopefully it'll color up. One thing I did notice was that it did form those bubbles which it didn't really have in the shop. Weird huh?
  10. This is a great thread especially for me right now as I just bought a Bubble tip today. I got it to attach in just the right spot and hopefully it stays. I was curious about feeding them and now thanks to this thread I've got some ideas. I do have a question though for you guys. I have a Percula clown and she is hosting in a leather coral which is fine as it doesn't seem to bug it but I want to move her into the anemone. Any tricks? Thanks, Ed
  11. Man I was looking at some different species of seahorses to get and captive raised ones are so freakin' expensive. I was thinking of H. reidi but whatever's cheap at this point lol
  12. Yeah I've pretty much decided to do a tank with seahorses instead. I figure the tank will feature Tonga branch rock, several Caulerpa species, some mushroom rocks and some Hypocampus erectus seahorses. To update this tank however I broke down and bought a protein skimmer for it. There was no way I was going to buy a $ 130 protein skimmer when I could get the same or better results from a plain counter current air powered skimmer so I settled on an AquaMedic Minifloater and an air pump. Over the years I've messed with so many kinds of skimmers and the truth is that the original limewood air blocks produce way better foam than any venturi. Yeah they take more maintenance but not THAT much more than cleaning the intake on a venturi. Ok I've dismounted the soapbox. I should mention that I did have to modify it ever so slightly to fit it in the first chamber of the back filter part. I'll post pics of it running soon...
  13. Well sort of, there was a mix up with an online vendor and they were nice enough to give me a break on an extra Aquapod. I should mention though that I'm gonna be doing this one with a 2X40 watt PC fixture. Nn halides. I've read that Montipora capricornis does ok under lower light but I'm totally open to suggestions on other species of SPS corals.
  14. Well I have three damsels in there. The mean one is the South seas damsel (Chrysptera toupou) and man that thing was pretty mean. I threw in three yellow tail damsels at once to try to mellow it out and it punked all of them so that they were trapped in a corner for about a month. One disapeared altogether and eventually they got along fine. The clownfish is the most recent addition and believe it or not they're totally fine. This particular percula is pretty ornery though so that helps.
