1. so heres the stumper... Yesterday I tested the tank and I had .25ppm of ammonia. with ph at 8.0, and p. gravity at .020, and no nitrites or nitrates not bad. oh and that was day five... Today I test the tank and have ph8.0 and ammonia at .25ppm. same p. gravity. no nitrites but 5ppm of nitrates. How could I possible got nitrates and never read nitrites. don't you need one to make the other. oh my fish are doing great. no deaths since the air problem. Oh so I was also wondering if bareycuda or anyone else might be able to tell me what nitrates can do to my tomato fry. My books just don't really touch bases with nitrates. other that the fry tank can take about 50-100ppm of nitrates and still have a good metamoriphis. should I start to worry? should I change more water? Now that today will be day seven. Also I started adding flake spirilia to the fry tank yesterday. grounded of course. Im hoping tonight I have baby brine to feed. It all depends when it hatches. It is day seven. maybe then some ammonia will be going away. also to answer some questions. I am feeding my rotifers phytoplex, and also some trial food, I can't remeber the name of. the guy I get the ritifers from is a researcher for eugene research aquatics, and he is trying this dry food out for his company. When I find the paper with the name on it i'll let you know. However I don't put the dry food in the tanks with my fry. I only put it in the rotifer containers. and I sieve it out before they go into my tank. Also I have yet to see film on the top of my water or smells of any sort. That was my first thing I looked for when my fry started gasping at the surface. I did turn up my bubble wand and they are doing much better. I wanted the bubble wond because last time i did the baby's I had a circulation proble with only two airstones. When they got bigger they weren't getting enough air or water current, so I thought this time I'd up the air. also making it dispersed evenly thoughout the tank. just an experement. seems to be working. I also put in my bigger whisper air pump. I did that because it has two outlets for hoses. that way I need less spliters. I have two rotifer buckets, incase one crashes. and those are on one air line outlet with a spliters. the fry tank is on its own outlet this way, and i have it with it's own airline restricktor. I have found that this way I don't constanly have to constantly change air current in the spliter so the tank can get more or less and keeping the rotifers with the right air as well. Also to your question about the tank walls. I couldn't get the right size costruction paper so I got black poster board and I cut it to size. I set it up so I can see through the front of the tank, but not through the back or sides that way I can still see what I am doing when I need to clean.
2. So on day three I discovered I under estimated the amount of air in my tank. Being that it's larger and I have a bubble wond in my tank I thought I had enough air, but I was mistaken. When I got home I saw alot had died, and that the rest were gulping at the surface, so I got my books out. And I tested my tank for pollutions and I had a .25ppm of ammonia which isn't bad with my 8.0 ph at 80 degrees. I did do a water change though. Had to get the dead fry out of my tank. and It came down to that I didn't have enough air in the tank with all the babys and rotifers. now at day four they have silver bellies. so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Though I really hate the brine shrimp feeding that I will have to start soon. I dont want them to over eat.... Specialy when I cant watch them when I am at work.... Also last night I started them on a bit more light and they don't seem to mind a bit.
3. How much for the chiller? I get thursday and friday off?
4. well it's my third batch of clowns, thought I only had about a dozen maybe the first time, and I had a horrible heat problem that was solved They are really dark tomato clowns. and i have never dosed the tank with vodka. Though how should I get them off this glass? before they hatch?
5. so Today I took the eggs from my dads house to mine in my bucket. i got the eggs off the back of the acylic with a razor blade and my gravel filter sucking them up. I think we only lost a small handfull. On my way home with them in my bucket, eight of them hatched. and it was like maybe a ten minute drive. now they are set up in my twenty gallon ADA tank with air bubble and heater. Oh and this time I use black constuction paper instead of painting the tank. in case I want to use my tank for something else later. Oh and here is a picture of my new puppy apollo he's now eight weeks old and the first of his breed in the usa since 1930. straight from germany. he's the one in the middle Just laid on 4-09-2010 So I am on day eight today and so far so good. my boys are doing great. it looks like they are doing good on the bbs but I suppose only time will tell. Right as I speak I am decysting the bbs eggs. I have my sieves out and am doing good. I still have a bit of ammonia but so far not toxic (Free ammonia). I still have nitrates but nothing fatal. I am about to do a water change. my tank has 8.0 ph and no nitrates still. my tempture is running at 82 degrees. I believe they are right on schedule. I have been also feeding pulverised spirila as well. they take some, but it also does pollute so I don't put much in and I try to do a water change shortley after. Good thing I bought that ro machine from liquid sunshine before he closed. because I am going through so much water and salt Oh and heres something interesting my clowns, after I just tooktheir eggs they laid more. they are on day six I think. But I cant hatch them I only have one tank. but if someone want to try I'd let you get the eggs. They laid them on the glass again. I didn't think they would lay so soon because she normally lays once a month so I didn't get my tile in there yet. but still if you are around here and want to try your welcome to them. Also if you needed rotifers I have a real cheap reliable hook up. They are tomato clowns
6. Im in springfield and I have lots of kenya tree corals if you want some om me
7. I like my phone love it to death its a year old and its a gravity but I love it
8. Some clowns I have had takes months to go into anemones I have noticed. Specialy if they were tank bread. They have to get their slime coat up to the sting of the anemone. Some I have seen will always ingnore the anemone completely and find your favorite coral to house in. why no one knows. Got to love em though.
9. more pics. this is also the tank my pistols are in and two gobys the tiger shrimp is under the small hairy mushroom and the multi colores mushrooms towards the middle of the tank and he is with the yellow watchman goby and the randol shrimp is on the far left of the tank with his white goby. I never see them unless it's after work at midnight when its pudding time for the fishys and shrimp and corals. It seem I spend more time watching or doing something on my tanks than watching tv, or talking to my husband. I guess that is the secret to a great marriage... Get tons of reef tanks and ignore each other, while both enjoying the fishys together. our mariage seems to work that way, and we have been together for ever.
10. in my twenty long is my rose bubble time and I have a 30 inch 4 t-5 lighting on it. two bulbs are 14k daylight. the other two are actnic. with one moon light. heres some pics.. taken on my cell
11. My clowns are angels even my tomatos that constantly breeding. I use to have a problem with my maroons, but the big b--ch has final learned who is boss.
12. So today and yesterday I watched as my long spined urchin spawned so very cool and may I be the first to say IT'S A BOY....
13. When you take out 300,000 dollars of insurance on your one bedroom apartment just incase one of your tanks break
14. When you tell your husband you will be happy with a two and half gallon nano reef, cause you aren't suppose to have tanks where you live, and a year later end up with ten tanks ranging from 2.5 gallon to 90 gallons in your living room
15. So can I put a randall pistol shrimp in with my tiger pistol shrimp? It's a 20 long tank and has one fish in it. a maroon clown, and it's rose bubble tip anemone. The guy said I could at the pet store but I don't always believe what I hear. the randal is 1/3 inch and the tiger is about one inch oh ya and I have a goby in the tank already with the tiger shrimp
16. Ya carpets are just so hard to keep alive. I've had mine one year but it takes for ever. Eric at liquid sunshine once told me he never ordered them cause all they do is die. I had one that expelled it's stomach just like that and was still sticky and reacted to touch and two days later it was dead. Huge tank polluters too....
17. I don't have my camera back yet my sister has it in mexico. She'll me back in a while. They are pink eggs with string goop on them and they are just on that rock except the ones that have floated away. they dont have eyes or anything so I know they aren't my fishy eggs and they are a bit bigger than fish eggs at least for my clown
18. I did a test and nothing is polluting. my two fish are as happy as ever. course they hang out on the other side of the tank. and I have this huge 190 gallon filter on that tank 10 times more than I need, but you can never have enough

snow flake eel

So I have a 90 long acylic reef tank and before I ever made it into a reef tank I owned a snow flake eel. I find this so cool. well minus the fact I cant keep snails, or crabs of any kind. he is so cool. we even hand feed him. he doesn't ever mess with the other fishes or corals. Also we have found he is a worm hunter. we have yet to find a brissle worm or any other kind of worm in this tank ever. we have seen him rip them out of new rocks, and he never messes with the feather dusters. Lets just say he could be my new best friend, and he's huge now.
20. so I have a pistol shrimp and a watchman goby in this tank three crabs one blue legged hermits and two red legged hermits and one maroon clown and I know they arent clown eggs so what are they they are all over my star polyps and some other corals as well they have strings like mucus around them. It's not the greatest picture because I had to use my cell phone but maybe someone knows. they just showed up today.
21. Mines splits all the time too i'll let you know, I have two right now but if it splits three will be too many Mine tend to split small. real small. smaller than I've seen in stores, and It may be about to soon I think
22. I have noticed my bubbletips get more bubbles when I put regular iodide in my tanks. also The one I have under metal halide 14k is more greener than the ones I have under t5 actinic amount two and two day light bulbs. Though I have had them about the same time. They were both from the same cloned anemone. Also the anemones under metal halide 14k bulbs seem to grow twice in size. though neither anemones have ever wondered through either of my tanks, and still on their original rocks. Of course this is just my experence over 10 years time. However I have to replace the metal halide bulbs once a year normally sooner and the t-5's I change about every 18 months. And metal halides are about 50 bucks for one bulb and my t-5's per bulbs are give or take 18 bucks. though I have to buy a larger amount of those. so It all depend. I did have an small long tenacle anenome that was rather small when I bought it in a small 5 1/2 gallon and no clown and I used LED lights only and I had him about two years. he was just beautiful. He finaly out grew his tank so I have it to my sister a little over a year ago cause she has this huge tank and no anemones. she's has had him a year and a half about now. so I guess what you should do is experement. what works for someone else might not for you, and vise versa. every ones tank is different. You could see what people say maybe try it see how your anemone likes or dislikes his surroundings. Just only try one change at a time. That way you will know. Who knows you might discover the next great thing for reef systems
23. Mine only takes a day possible two to open after they split, I run a butt load of carbon in mine and poly pads and just about anything I can get in there even k. pure elite. And my water testing for just about everything is just a good as it can get. I'm just anal I guess. Bubble tips do like good water quality and lots of light and water flow. Mine always climbs to my outlet filter bars all of them. course my rose seems to split about every two months. My clown feeds him too much
