  1. I am just concerned now about what I have heard about the powder blus tang being very hard to keep alive. I plan to QT the pair for about 6-8 weeks in a tank of their own and feed the heck out of the and keep fresh live alge in the tank for them to graze on when ever they like. I think the key is QT, and help them get good and healthy before the intro to the display tank. Any ideas? Kevin
  2. Sorry, this post was mainly for fish, my bad that I didn't say that before. I have just had some very bad luck with acclimation of fish. I was badly misinformed and this was just met inform newbies. Thanks Kevin
  3. I am only a big fan of proper treatment and acclimation of fish, inverts and such only because of my failed experiences. If I find other post of view I would like to post it in this same thread, as it is only one persons point of view, and DOES NOT IN ANYWAY MEAN IT IS THE "RIGHT WAY" OR ONLY WAY TO DO IT. If some one have a better point of view that they would like to share, I would welcome your post on this thread. I look at this board as an educationial resource. many on here have knowledge to share, while others have opinions good and bad, we just live with what is posted on here. Let's make the most and best of it. Thanks For The Read Kevin
  4. Proper Acclimation For Fish And Inverts, It's No Laughing Matter (laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)(laugh) Andy, you must not have ever been lied to about how long it really takes to acclinate fish from a bag. (laugh)(laugh)(laugh) I have lost $$$ in fish and not using a QT tank. I WILL NEVER DO IT THAT WAY EVER AGAIN, THIS IS WHY THIS KIND OF KNOWLEDGE SHOULD BE PERMINATLY POSTED ON THIS BOARD, IN SEVERAL PLACES. That is why at the HMSC/OCA Tour it was one of the area spoken about for the longest period of time. What happens with the blood gases when you put a fish in a plastic bag at ship it for nearly a week in a qt. of water. With Extremely Low PH and High Ammonia Levels how long would you live sitting in a box waiting for anyone to let you out and be acclimated slowly and given an honest fighting start to a new and different life. (enforcer) I will never have that problem ever again. I have put together an acclimation rack with tanks, heaters, filtered powerheads and bubble wands. I hope that during this stage that itr will make for a better transition. I will post photos in the week to share what I am attempting to do. My goal is to improve the quality and health of all of my fish before I ever place them in my display tank. Thanks For Your Interest In This Read Kevin

  9. I am only planning to remove sand, I believe my send bed is too deep. So I will make my sand bed about 1-1 1/2" deep as my sand bed is abot 3"... I this will make for a better system. All of my rock will stay, or be used in my future tanks, as I have 150 LBS. Thanks Kevin
  10. Looking at buying powder blue tangs (A PAIR) , any thing to look for when selecting. I also am looking at a blue cardinal as well, this fish is huge, about the size of your hand. Very cool fish. Thanks Kevin
  11. She said that she wanted fish for Mothers Day, BABE is gon'a get some fish. Hey thanks for the info, It's all in the bag. Thanks Kevin
  12. Hey Thanks, I do plan to QT all of the fish that I buy, I was very stupid not to have done so from the very beginning. DOH!DOH!DOH! I am planning to QT everything atleast 2-3 weeks, and medicate then all, as for the ich magents, they will get six weeks + before going to the display. What med do we recommend for good health and treatment for problems and ich?
  13. Yes 4'x18"x24" is my 90 GAL. Today I bought 1 Blue Cardinal, very big, 1 Flame Angel, 2 Blue Face Tangs for my wife, Happy Mothers Day BABE !!!, it's her tank now she told me.....BIG LOL....I think my chick needs a few more tanks, what do you say boys ! ! ! ....LOL. Still looking, all in going into QT's for a few weeks and then go very slow. I plan to release one or two into my...ooops, her display tank, and then add another to the QT. Kevin
  14. Thanks Jay, I will check with the wife, I think Beaverton is passed my mileage limit with out my escort, LOL, should be a good time, something new is always good. I will bring the new VISA...LOL. As I have not been to shops in the Metro Area. Kevin
  15. I would like to try it just for some custom pieces to hide under rocks for powerheads or to increase water Circulation to maybe help with water quality issues that I have been having the last several weeks. I see nothing wrong with placing low out-put nozzles under rock stands, infact; I am going to try it next week as I will attempt to use PVC to make the stands before repositioning my rocks after a major gravel vac. If I could find something other then a toxic product like cement or mortar I would do it. I am not looking to sell for profit, just the good ol’e DIY trick works for me….LOL. I will research products, as I just had an idea that I will post after I read the label to make sure that it is not in any way toxic....LOL. I just may be on to something here. I want to make things like this a project, to me, this hobby should be a DIY as much as possible. Thanks Kevin
  16. I second the idea by Nyles. We should have the opportunity to get our hands dirty and learn at the same time. Let's try to set something up at OSU in Corvallis as well, we should be tapping into the resources of facilities that share in the common interest. We should make the meeting more of a workshop and have a project that we are working on. Several thing to go over is how to acclimate fish properly, the proper way to QT live stock, and how to grow our own food for our tanks. Another useful subject is how to hospitialize fish or inverts when they first start to show signs of going down hill before it is too late and they die. I would like to see move done with these areas. Thanks Kevin
  17. I am looking for fish ideas as my tank had some serious issues with ammonia and I lost all of my fish.:eek::eek: (flame) I currently have a 4 month old 90 GAL. reef tank with 150 LBS. of live mature rock and a 2" sand bed.(whistle) What I am looking for is medium size fish-larger fish that will remain in the open for the most part, (laugh) and not want to hide in the rocks as much.DOH! I am looking for ideas of brite colored fish, multi-color, and compatible with tank mates(laugh)(laugh)(laugh) is that even possible, tell me that I'm dreaming...LOL. I am set-up with QT tanks, and am ready to start adding fish. What do you have, please send photos, and why do you like them? Thanks in advance Kevin
  18. UV sterilizer was also added one week ago and things have improved in the last week, with water changes of 40-50% three times in the last week.
  19. Okay, thank you, CALLING ALL 29 GAL TANKS, CALLING ALL 29 GAL TANKS, PLEASE REPORT TO THIS THREAD......LOL. HEY, NO ONE IS ANSWERING....LOL. I also am looking for information as to how many fish a guy can QT in a tank at a time. I have fish being held for me and I don't want to bring them home to QT tanks and screw it up, never doing this before. I have purchased fish of several sizes, I will place them according to size or level of temperment. All I have at this time is 20 GAL tanks. I also have purchased a few ich magnets, so they will remain in a tank of their own. Can I get away with bare botton QT tanks (NO SAND, NO ROCK) just heater and filter on a powerhead? I have had great luck getting the ammonia level down with fresh accivated carbon in sump and overflow box and a 48" flexible bubble wand, gravel vac, water changes. I think I may be on my way again, I will give it several weeks and see where I am at before adding any fish. By the way, all of my inverts are doing great, and no death, not even my (4) flame scallops, why are they still alive when all of my fish are dead? Thanks in advance for all of your help Kevin
  20. Unknown what caused the spike at this time. I would like to find out if water can be tested for bacteria? I WILL NOT ADD ANYTHING TO THE TANK UNTIL I KNOW FOR SURE WAHT IT IS. I NEED TO FIGURE IT OUT AND TRY TO HAVE MY TANK STOCKED WITH SOMETHING BEFORE AUG. 3rd, AS I AM HAVING A HOUSE PARTY WITH A 90 GAL DISPLAY WITH NO FISH All of my inverts are all alive, I have only lost fish. My plan is to gravel vac the entire tank and remove most of my sand bed. Not sure how to know what the problem is. Doing another water change today, but, my (4) bubble tips are at the top of my rocks, and that makes a water change with gravel vac of 50% hard to do. Any ideas ? What ever the problem is, really is strange, because other then hermits and snails, and a few star fish, nothing likes the bottom of the tank. My acclimation tanks are ready to drip, and QT tanks are ready to hold over new fish. If I need to buy more 10's and 20's to hold fresh live stock over I will. I just need fish in my display before my party. I AM IN THE MARKET FOR SMALL TANKS TO HOLD NEW STOCK WHILE I AM WAITING FOR MY TANK TO TURN BACK AROUND. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT. ALL TANKS ARE VEY CLEAN WITH A BLEACH SOAK AND FLUSH WITH 140 + DEGREE WATER AND AIR DRIED. SHOULD MY HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH MY QT OR ACCLIMATION TANKS AFTER THAT CLEANING. Thanks Kevin
  21. Thanks guys, MAN, I am tired of flushing fish. I AM GOING TO QT EVERYTHING FROM THIS POINT FORWARD. Everything is coming out this week and I am going to gravel vac the crap out of my entire tank. And then place rock back into my tank. I also plan to reduce my sand bed to about 1". gravel vac my tank into a funnel with filter media to retain sand, and flush tank water through my skimmer, and from my return back into my skimmer several time. How do you test your tank or water for bacteria that may be killing fish? I want to make sure that I have no other problems before I assume that everthing is okay. I will QT all new fish in bare botton tanks until I can be sure that I am not dealing with any other problems. Thanks Kevin
  22. I would like to put my 2 cents in on this as well. I have learned a very hard lesson in the 4 months that I have had my 90 GAL up and running. I would say know where you are buying, QT all fish, and any fish that is not hearty or ich mags. or are prown to getting sick. I plan to keep harder to keep fish in a QT and get their health to a prime level, and give anti-stress meds and any thing to improve the health condition of my live stock. This key is to give them a fighting chance. One last thing, if you buy bag fish from any store that offer non-acclimated fish, they should be drip acclimated for a minimum of 10-15 hours before placing them in a QT tank to hold them over for several weeks. This is not only my advice, but, my plan of action from this day forward. THERE IS NO SAFE SHORT CUT, DO IT, AND DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME., Thanks Kevin
