  1. Would you still wait weeks to add to display tank? Under my light the rock has brite red, purple, pink and orange spots with what looks like leathers and I'm not sure what the things are. Thanks Kevin
  2. Yes, I will be watching all levels to see wqhat is going to happen. It did not feel like slime, you could just see stuff had fallen off of the rock and the water was not clear, looked like very very weak tea with a strong sea smell, but not rotten eggs or sulfur. Thanks Kevin
  3. What will it do if you rinse it with fresh water to get any debris off of it? (scratch) No rotten smell just the smell of the sea, not a fresh smell and not rotten. It is in with a heater and skimmer and light after I hosed it off with shower sprayer and added to tote. It smells just like I got it, just sluff off from no heat or light. It has stayed in saltwater the whole time and has never been in fresh water. I used the water that I transported it in. An then added my water change water to top it off with skimmer heater and lights. Thanks Andy, your into is a great help to a new reefer. Kevin
  4. I am waiting up, am will check every few to see if I have a reply. Thanks Kevin
  5. I am looking for help with questions about adding additional rock to my display tank. I bought three additional pieces of rock from a members tank that has beem in water with no light and not heat. I am smelling an odor that I believe is die off with no slime, just debris in the bottom of the Rubber Maid tote. Here are my Questions: 1. What can I do to add them to my tank? 2. Can I rinse with fresh water and add a few smaller pieces and then add the 1 medium to larger one in like a few day to a week? Thanks Kevin (scratch)
  6. I am looking for used tanks 10-29 GAL, no need for tanks to be complete. I am looking for just bare tanks with working light hood in good condition for a project that I am working on. (scratch) If you have tanks that you are looking to get out of your garage please (PM) me with details, oh, and a photo would be great.(laugh) Thanks Kevin
  7. I stand corrected, thank you Jeff. Macro Alge it is. I'm going to bone up on proper terms before I make a complete and tolal "A$$" of my self, we will all talk in a few days, later. Kevin

    Check This Out

auctionmethis.com I would love to find someone that would help frag items from these many actions. I am looking to make a purchase, but have little knowledge. My plan is to buy within the next week to two weeks as I am getting my frag tank set up this week. I would be willing to divide or sell what is not kept for my display frag tank. Thanks Kevin
  9. Thanks Jeff, I plan to keep watching everything develop over time. This is an exciting venture, and one of the biggest mystery's will be to see what will become of everything as time passes. I find that that the toughest thing is everyone differing opinion on what is the right time with a tank that has rock and sand from another tank. Some say fish ready but add on more then X per week, clear to wait 12 months. How is one to know who to believe, this is the hardest thing to understand. It may sound like I take it personal, but that is not the case. I would just like to know what filter method members are using to see if I can improve on what I have. And what MICRO-ALGE is being used other then cheato? Thanks Kevin
  10. I think what I am experiencing is alge, my tank has hard brown, wine colored deposits that are hard to scrape off of the glass, and my rock is turning a (merlot) wine color finally. I am seeing feather dusters about 1/4-1/2" off the top of some rocks, and something that looks like little white starscovering most of one good size rock. Any advice on what to do to care for my tank at thing point? It looks like my tank is coming around and developing at a good rate. Thanks Kevin
  11. Okay, what is the right amount of micro-alge to house in your refugium. The main on that I have is cheato, my others are, Grape Caulerpa, Feather Caulerpane that I bought from a local fish shop. I am looking at my water test, and noting is out of the norm, so I am wondering what water test members are doing that might be benifical at the two month period. I have done, and have had a full spectrum water test done, and and everything is within the normal range, and I ma told that there is not concern at this time. I have read the report that grape Caulerpa can become sexual. My refugium has light 24/7 with a 44 WATT 2500 Lumens light and my 10,000K (CPF). I know that this may not prevent the problem, but I am trying to have a jump on the game to prevent problems. I am new to saltwater, and I am wanting to keep my water quality level high, so I am wondering if adding a carbon filiter is a good add-on to having a skimmer, sump and refugium. Maybe what I am asking is, what does the best job keeping water clear and at healthy levels. Should I be looking at a second filter, or put cheato in my display tank? I am looking at improving water quality, can someone make an informed recomondation as to what so of my options are? I need to keep cost in mind when making this change. Thanks Kevin
  12. (scratch) I know that doing a water change in a 90 GAL tank, I need to account for the rock and sand. Also I have a 45 GAL Sump/Refugium that currently is about 25 GAL full. In doing a water change of 15 GAL, I am wondering if that is about enough of a water change, or if it is taking out too much of the good bacteria, or if it will be okay? (scratch) Water quality was still good, upon testing prior to water change all readings were normal, however water change was done. This tank is new, only about 2 months old, and has gone through three cycles that lasted only about 3-5 days each. I have been without any change or cycle for more then two weeks and things look like that are going to level out. I understand that the cycles are not over yet, but one thing going for my tank is that the rock and sand came from excisting tanks that had been set up for several years. (plotting) I an just wondering what a refugium 1/3 full of cheato has to do with it. My refugium is half full of mico-alge of different types. I am currently growing different mico-alges that I have come accorss in the last month, and I truely believe that having a refugium with mico-algo with live rock is that way to go. (laugh)
  13. I was snooping around on the net and found something that many be very helpful in the debate concerning lighting. It seems as thought everyone has their own opinion on lighting, and even though opinions are great and can inform, some are often mis-informed and it can be a costly investment. http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Lighting.html One of the things that I have learned over the past months is that although people understand (WATTS) they don't understand (LUMENS) or (KELVIN RATING). http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-05/sj/index.php http://www.aquabotanic.com/lightcompare.htm http://www.sunmastergrowlamps.com/SunmLightandPlants.html Very interesting reading regarding lighting and specs. Enjoy Kevin

  15. http://www.wetwebmedia.com/plumbingmarart.htm Something to consider (scratch) when plumbing a saltwater aquarium, also nice sump design. (rock2)
  16. What are the signs of ich? Are there warning signs, before fish are belly....lol...sorry. mine have just died from fighting, it's my disfunctional tank family.
  17. I am open to a nice variety of mico-alge, I have cheato, and two others, but they are very very small right now. I guess I need to buy what I can, put it in my fuge and start growing. Also I might used an extra 33 GAL Rubbermaid tote and grow in that way. I could order several different kinds and pay $25.00 shipping, but why do that. We just need to be watching for eachother. Let me know if anyone is going to a reef shop anytime, so I can get you some $$$. Thanks Kevin
  18. Sand and Live Rock Thanks Scott, The rock is awesome, what a great score to add to my 90 GAL. Great frags also, what more can I say your a stand-up guy, I will do business with you again....WOW. Thanks Again Kevin
  19. WTB macroalgae in Corvallis (laugh) I have been looking for the same with no such luck. I am your next door neighbor and if I can find any, I will let you know and we can work something out. I started in January of this year and it is very hard for a new hobbiest to get started. You look like your a pretty new member, what has your luck been like? I will let you know when I get something. What I have in my sump/refugium is very small, and I don't even know what I have for sure, I will look it up online. Thanks Kevin (laugh)
  20. WTT/WTS Mushroom/ 2 Morphs PM Sent (scratch)

    My sump

RE:Sump Hey Frank, I am new to this whole thing, and I don't know very much, but I will tell you something that I learned building mine from scratch. 1. Know what your overflow box will do for you. 2. Adjust it so that you will only loose minimal water in the event of a power failure. 3. Be sure that your entire unit will hold what ever overflow that you may have. 4. Build it accordingly, and so you have extra room after adding sand and rock in your refugium. 5. If possible, build your entire sump unit from a glass aquarium and divide it as you wish with plenty of extra room for your water overflow that you may have in the unforseen power failure. 6. Uses Sand, rock and micro-alge instead of bio-balls, I think they work better, it sure does for me so far. Good luck with it, keep us posted Thanks Kevin
  23. I also have wondered about if, and how I should plumb my 90 GAL. I am just currently using a flex hose from my overflow to my skimmer sumpand a 5/8 water line from my return to my tank. I am doing this just to test everything out prior to using PVC and glue. I am able to find the max flow rate of my plumbing and copy it with 1" PVC and ball valves. I have come up with a neat idea that is working for me currently in the plumbing area right now, and I will share it in photowhen it is finished, and I can figure out how to get my photos to turn out better. Thanks Kevin
  24. I would also like to thank Jason at Coral Reef Pet Center for hosting then Feb meeting. I am a new member as of this month. I desided that I will make it a goal of mine to learn and study this hobby. My interest is to learn from the vast knowledge and expereience that is out there in this hobby and in our club. I hope to better myself and to help others getting started in the hobby with what I have learned. Jay, it was nice to meet you, and John sorry that we did not get the opportunity to meet and to also here about the ole Cavalier, may she finally R.I.P. 25. I would like to purpose the idea to divide to club into groups just for the purpose of local "Meet And Greet" get togethers. We have a great board, and to have the ability to post, search, and locate members is very nice. I would like to purpose the idea of making it easier to locate member by city or geographic regions for the purpose of personal invites to our local "Meet And Greets". I will be planning another "Meet And Greet" after the meeting tomorrow @ Jasons ( CORAL REEF) in Salem. If you are interested in meeting, please contact me at the meeting, my name is Kevin. I would like to meet all members, and welcome all to our local "Meet And Greets". How to get your ideas and interest to become imvolved in our local chapter, it will be filled with learning and fun.
