1. was shooting raw, but a guy at advanced said it's noisier at high ISO so low light I should do the jpgs, then I never turned raw back on for the garden pics. Oops (: I know I can't use a color comparison technique with the naked eye since I see 2 different colors with each eye due to a surgery, and after school spent a year doing custom enlargements and then color correcting proofs at a pro printer. I got fatigued really fast by the colors and had trouble that other staff did not experience, it was like I could no longer see white as white. Part of it is trying to color correct 300 wedding shots in 20 minutes, each photographer's choice of film and level of skill varied greatly. Priority was the wedding dress had to be white but sometimes that made the bride's face green or orange... a couple of the photographers used dollar store film, expired Konica I think, it was awful. The calibration things I was interested in trying are devices that look at the screen for you instead. 140 little swatches... ugh. Sounds like my old job in terms of annoying. Thanks for the tip on lightroom, really frustrated with gimp today. Here are a few examples of photos... first 2 shot with a 50mm lens, not a macro. Manual focus. 3rd was with 100mm Canon macro USM. The 3rd works but in general I would like more depth of field and in general a lens that long probably needs to be on a tripod and have more light available than my tank has, plus that was sheer luck. Waste of time shooting pictures and hoping for good luck. I'd rather make an educated guess and then bracket. I have been told by a pro that I absolutely must try the Canon 65mm macro USM. He also suggests buying a 5DmkII which unless he's buying it for me is not going to happen no matter how cheap they are these days now that the new one is out (: He's a perfectionist... so if anyone really needs a Canon macro this is something to look at. 2. Thanks for the tips on white balance, will have to work on that. I get used to the settings for my own tanks and any I shoot frequently but then at other peoples' houses I am not getting it. What monitor calibration are you using that you like? I don't need pro results but I do know as we have 4 or 5 computers running at any given time around here that photos look grey on some screens and too vivid on others. I don't want to digitally archive a bunch of badly washed out pics and delete the originals by mistake. I am no pro shooter, never print, I just put my pics up mostly on facebook. I took 2 years of photography from excellent teachers in college (Diane Kornberg and Terry Toedtemeier) but was not really ready to learn at that age. Now I can get on Wikipedia when I feel dumb about something like never really learning how to use filters or comprehend ISO. Wikipedia stinks for some topics but if you like me are intimidated by words like bokeh, bracketing, etc you get on there and read til it sinks in. For me it took more than a few readings, am not a technical person. Another friend last night was asking me about macro lenses, I don't use one unless shooting a very small object like a bee. A 4" coral or flower to get the entire subject in focus I need to play with a standard lens and set the aperture multiple ways, shoot a bunch of tries, and I can usually get the back and foreground to go away with a standard lens. Not pro shooting results but good enough for facebook. It's not like I get paid (:.

4. Furan is really harsh and carcinogenic according to a vet I know, she wants it banned. Said I need to boil the used water before pouring it in the toilet to break it up. Thank you for being upfront and honest about this, I got it a few years ago and it was a nightmare. Pretty sure who it came from and that he knew it too. An apology goes a long way, along with a heads up. I moved the affected rocks to a hospital tank because they were too big to dip. Followed the directions on the package. Everything bleached and looked horrible for half a year, and was terrified that I did not know how to get all the zoas out of the tank-some are on just huge rocks. But maybe thinning them out helped as they were unaffected. I lost almost all of some morphs and the ugly ones did fine of course. Don't know if Coral RX helps. How long was it between purchase of the source and seeing the symptoms? Wondering if quarantine needs to be longer. Also wondering if you are the guy I bought Candy Apple Reds from at Frank's house, don't think so... I don't get zoas that often anymore because of fear of pox. The reds are kind of stressed but I think they just did not like the light on the quarantine tank. Final question, which morph showed it first? Is it me or are blue zoas extra susceptible? I think blue zoas are different because I have had 2 different yellow tangs over the years that ate them. No other morphs, just the blue ones. Higher the price faster they went (:. Kinda makes me wonder if they are not as toxic as the others or even a different but similar species. Might just be they had pox and somehow that makes them edible.
5. what wattage? I have a 39 watt ballast I am not using (powers a pair of 3' bulbs).
6. well I looked at some of my earlier photos and they are very washed out, then we switched monitors. I hate the new one, depending on how I sit in the chair the pic looks totally different. I know it's a time consuming frustrating thing to do but I just have to know what my baseline is-are the washed out images "right" or the latest versions? The little camera shop next block up from World of Wet Pets, I think it is Advanced, they rent a calibration thing out too. I don't print, if I ever need to do that I will go to Digicraft.
7. I think some people are confused about the need for a macro lens as well. They describe their goal and it's a thing they could do with a 50mm standard lens but I lack the lingo to describe effectively how I deal with that. They may however need one on one help, not the standard meeting format. So truly a workshop. Getting close to the glass is not necessarily at least in my mind essential when the goal is to control depth of field, getting close to the glass just puts a reflection of the lens and fingers on the glass for me. I could use help on metering high watt halides and LED's on a Canon DSLR sensor, either get too much contrast or not enough and the meter wants me to take pics that are overexposed. Don't suppose any of you have a monitor calibration setup you want to rent out in exchange for a couple frags?
8. Yeah I don't like people knowing how vulnerable we are to sabotage, seems like in this case the press coverage is bad... it has to be a reef hobbyist to know about copper, anybody else would put some kind of poison in the tank that we could not test for even, we would just be scratching our heads. But great now the press is on it the activists do know... couple pennies or a snip of copper wire and who knows what happens. Also, thanks for the support guys. You'd have to be on the level of Ted Bundy to piss me off that much where I would actually take revenge, and even then I would not go after the animals. My kind of vengence mostly consists of *****ing to my husband who could not care less about fish peoples' interpersonal politics and half the time doesn't listen to a word I say about fish, thus is entirely safe to throw gossip at. (: Plus the only live animal I have ever bought at sw fantaseas is a perfectly healthy yellow tang I got a few years ago, still happily swimming and eating trouble free aside from eating all my blue zoanthids. I am glad he has video and really hope they nail whoever did this so we can all stop wondering next time we swap frags or host a meeting!
9. so is there more to viewing ones' own rep than seeing the number under our name?
10. awesome... what a great bit of news. I cannot reach some of the scratches in the 120 even when it's dry and clean, my arms don't reach that far! I got a friend who is going to be super happy to hear this as well since his tanks are in a business. Thanks! Kate
11. These are good for quarantine tanks, you should keep it. I have one on a 20 but originally had it on a 10. Kinda annoying that it's about a quarter inch too tall for a standard 10, is that what you meant by too big? If you have any plans on coming to Portland or have not sold it by the time we have the meeting at Garrets let me know, I don't get down to Salem much, but that is a very useful item.

13. what are the dimensions? Is the stand painted? Regular glass or? Looks pretty sharp with the walnut on it...
14. Hey who gave me points?!? Hell, now I probably got to write a few swear words to get it back down to 13.
15. Pretty stoked that my points are at 13, hope nobody messes with that either way. But how does one view or leave such points? I never really noticed they existed til I saw this thread...
16. Great, just to be up front... that is the date and time I went in there. Super. What I saw was the corals in the tray right under the reefstar already bleached like they were dying (probably just too close to the light), admired a deepwater acro in another tank but it had some patches of white as well, seemed like there was something wrong in the tanks. So it could have happened earlier, or maybe those corals were just stressed from shipping and intense light shock. Don't know if the tank with the acro even was the other tank that got hit. For the record I have not been to Ocean in a Box since Perry was running it out of his garage and no matter how much I might dislike a person I would not hurt innocent animals. I have not even left a negative yelp review. Now I really hope he knows who did this so I don't get to be a suspect. And I really like the owner of the 3rd store to get hit. It ain't me and I am pretty sure it's not my friend I went in with either, I don't think he even knew Ocean in a Box existed. Am assuming it's the same person to hit all 3 shops...
17. there was a group stealing birds from pet shops about 15 years ago, the good it did to know who was behind it was the shops told eachother who to watch out for so they could stand between them and the most valuable stock. As a result their final act was to steal a whole tank full of baby cockatiels just to be pissy but at least far as I know that was the end of it. All the shop owners should communicate, even the ones who have their differences for the good of all. You can get in a lot of trouble legally if you treat a shoplifter wrong but you can 86 them for life against future incidents.
18. That is the stuff I have, just was under the impression you had to drain the tank to use it. Does the skimmer pick up the particles? Man, would this be handy with tank maintenance accounts...
19. Hi, I keep hearing from people that there is a version of sandpaper I can use to polish acrylic while the tank is running by putting it between the algae magnet and glass, but they don't know details. They say I don't need to remove the water, corals etc. Is there any truth to this, some new product that is safe? Or are they just confused? Would love it if it was true, I got an asterina starfish under the algae magnet and lots of damage down at the sand line that I can't reach even if I do drain the tank. Thanks, Kate
20. friend of mine used glasscages, he was very happy but they don't deliver here that often. So unless they have changed, it could be a long wait. He said they basically wait til they can fill a truck and then make the rounds. His tank is either a 220 or 240 and he was happy with the build except at the top which has to be hidden by a canopy because of how they braced it, he thought it was kind of sloppy look. It was not a rimless... He said they were real pro and brought it into the house. Unfortunately he had to move it without their pro gear as he did not have them put it in the spot it was built for. Any future tanks I get will be glass, so tired of scratching acrylic, will be interesting to see what you find.
21. I hope if he is that sure then he has a suspect, would really be nice to catch this person
22. I see how this works... they donate the one unit to get me to win it so I can get hooked. First one's always free. Now I want to replace all my lights with em (: Can't quite afford to do that right now, but am definitely very happy with this unit. Check out coral colors now. This was blue without the green under T5HO, it appears to be going back to the colors it had when I got the original frag at Upscales. "] The Joe the Corals that were paler under the Phoenix 14K I was using are getting green where they were pale. Cats paws also going back to the color they had at Upscales. It's kind of fun having different lights on the same tank so I can see how frags of the same colony are affected, and the LED's (also have a Reefstar) are definitely coloring up the corals nicely. My frag system has a section with AI Sol, another with ATI T5HO bulbs (only 2), the Reefstar Par 38 section and for a joke a section with a screw in PC bulb from Fred Meyer. Which does grow coral but their color is terrible. I think the LED's are too much for the zoanthids though. Here is a shot of the frags, one side Sol and other 2 T5HO bulbs "]
23. when did this happen? I was in about a week ago and some of the corals looked pretty bad, wondering if it was already in the tank then. No it was not me (: If I find out who it is they are going to find out just how creative and patient I can be when I am angry.
