  1. Funny - I had the same thought that Andy did in that the polyp density seemed low for a digi... on the other hand, it seems a lot more upright and branched than the setosa frags I have seen (including mine). Hmmm (scratch) Oops... Didn't see Isaac's second post.
  2. You gotta be careful around chemists Bob! Not like us sloppy biologist types
  3. Sorry to hear about your Blenny Jason. I have had a few instances of otherwise healthy looking fish just turning up dead and have been suspicious of some sort of capture/transport issues as well. I typically trust most of the sources but I wonder if there isn't some misrepresentation (by suppliers) going on as Andy suggests. Probably the safest thing these days is to stick with stores you trust the most and only get specimens that have been around a while - of course, that decreases your choices somewhat. I will say that Soutas has been getting in some really healthy Leopard wrasses lately so clearly someone is still doing a good job collecting. BTW Jason - I see you got a rainsford. Were you able to find one that was eating fozen? I hope it works out for you. They can be a little shy at first. Good luck.
  4. Great! Thanks for the follow-up. Looking forward to seeing some pics. Guess I need to plan a trip to the store sooner rather than later.
  5. Funny... I don't seem to have the logo either and I swear I paid!!! Maybe Shane and I offended the "givers of the logo" in some unknown way. I could use some help from the reef-gods...
  6. There are a couple issues with finding the right height, one is the spread of the light (i.e coverage front to back of the tank) which will depend on the reflector you use and also heat generation/evaporation (worse the closer to the water). If I remember correctly, you had planned for quite a bit of airflow in the canopy which will help but this may still be an issue in terms of superheating the surface of the water. Unfortunately, I don't know of a good way to calculate the impact of this so it may require a little trial and error - either that or design an adjustable mounting! One additional issue with getting too close is the potential for water damage to the bulbs if your reflectors are not covered... Good luck - this is coming together really nicely!
  7. Great! I am guessing one will need to use a scraper to get off the coralline first then hit it with the sponge but who knows...
  8. Thanks Andy - that does look really promising. Hopefully someone will try it and post their impressions... I am highly tempted but not sure when I will make it to the store to pick one up.
  9. PM sent! Those are beautiful looking corals you have there - shame you are having to tear it down to move but hopefully you can get your other system up and running before hand. Good luck!
  10. Having worked in the basic sciences since '84 have had a lot of Mac exposure as that was the standard in most my labs. On the other hand, I have always owned at least one PC as well and built several over the years (just don't have time anymore with the tank!). I like aspects of both but find that the bang for the buck in PC hardware still can't be touched by the Mac's while there are certain activities (photo/video editing) for which the Macs seem to have better and less glitchy software. Of course, now that the Macs are all intel platforms it's quite easy to run a dual OS machine... I just would not plan to play high end games on it.
  11. Sorry to hear about the fish loss Eric. I'm glad the clowns and chromis are hanging in there though. Good luck on the QT and I hope everyone else pulls through. Are you going to try that hyposalinity treatment? Sean
  12. OK Miles, I have to ask... what's up with the tassel in the tank (scratch)
  13. That stand is looking really sharp Shane - can't wait to see that in it's finished form. Great job...
  14. Actually, I think he is recommending to have two drain lines connected in the overflow. That way, if one gets pluged for some reason (wayward snail for instance) the second can act as a backup and prevent an overflow. I think a lot of folk on here (including myself) have things set up that way. Hope that helps.
  15. Yeah - this definitely seems like a huge opportunity to get a giant monkey off their back wasted. Very frustrating to watch - sure wish we had TP (or Chris Paul for that matter) - I know, dream on. I am really torn over this squad these days. I love the young talent and potential but get really frustrated with the difficulties defending the pick and roll (what's with switching 90% of the time????), defensive rotations (or lack there of) and inability to close out better on perimeter shooters. There is part of me that agrees with the "they will get better with more experience" but there is also the "if Nate is supposed to be such a great defensive coach, how could he continue to let this happen" part of me as well. Truthfully, I have never been sold on Nate as a good game day coach based on his substitution patterns and seeming inability to effectively adapt to the game on the fly but lately I have also been questioning both offensive (how can they not figure out a way to consistently get Oden the ball in the post - high/low anyone?) and defensive schemes (see switching 90% of pick and rolls above). I know he has a reputation and all but sometimes.... Then again, you have what is in reality the youngest team in the league (minus Raef) with an excellent record and still in the playoff hunt in the West so hard to be too judgmental. OK... sorry for the BB rant folks. Back to fish and coral.
  16. Wow... nice score Dennis! You are a braver man than I if you are going to do surgery on that bad boy
  17. I had a couple of them over the years that eat frozen food as well. I have also heard that they can be somewhat finicky eaters which is why I would recommend getting one that has been at an LFS for a while so you can see how well they have (or haven't) adapted to eating prepared food just in case...
  18. Cool! Thanks Miles - that is a rather interesting adaptation. Deep water fish are some of the strangest animals...
  19. Jason - I have most often seen them at Soutas so you could send Mr Reef a PM and see if they have any. I am sure, however, that several of the LFS around would be happy to order one for you as well. Of course, you don't get to see how well they tank adapt in that case...
  20. Yes! Electrician to the rescue! One clarification about the grounding probe Dave for those of us that live in old houses. This only works if, in fact, you have legitimate three prong grounded outlets as you are taking advantage of the ground wire in a 3-wire electical system correct? I ask because I have lived in houses where there are 3 prong outlets that are not actually grounded! Always a good idea to check... Of course, if you live in a house with modern electircal service and functional GFI you should be good to go. Thanks.
