Marine depot contacted Julian Sprung and he said that his new reborn is the same stuff but crushed in a smaller size. That’s a lie in my opinion. The new stuff has gravel and trash in it. It’s literally the type of stuff you would find at a beach

this new reborn has snail shells, gravel, plant material, plastic pieces, pieces of paper

Well that is disturbing.  I crashed my tank from some organic metal containing contaminant in a reactor mix but have yet to find these kinds of items.  I've been going through my material with a magnet prior to adding to the reactor now but hate to see this level of garbage.  I have run ARM successfully in the past in a relatively high flow, high pH setup FWIW.

Looks great! Would built the stand? May have to get one built for my big system too.

My guess would be Scott @spectra He has done really fine metal work on heavy duty stands for many of the reefers on here.

  3. Hi Eli,

Great news about the BJD intervention and some promising data re whole tank treatments.  Given the results on the biome balance, I wonder if this could provide some hope for doing targeted antibiotic treatments to help restore balance to tanks that have gotten "out of whack" for one reason or another (you know where I'm going with this one).  Clearly risky but I could see where a combination of targeted antibiotic with reintroduction of desired bacterial strains could potentially be a more broadly useful paradigm (not that BJD treatment isn't a breakthrough in and of itself). Thanks!

  4. Wow Jeremy - glad you caught that right away.  I'm thinking the quick buffering of the pH swing hopefully saved you.  It is interesting, however, that the giant Alk spike has so far proved uneventful for the coral - thankfully!

I have always been curious how people who dose kalk as part of an ATO setup manage the controls on that since evaporation rate isn't constant.  I could see having the emergency timers and pH safety checks but how do you manage to keep things consistent within those and still achieve correct volume (salinity) control?  That conundrum always made me nervous...

Glad it seems to be working out and thanks for sharing as a precautionary tale!

I used the Icecap backup on my Maxspect XF330's and it worked great.

Good to know!  I am running the older 250s but guessing that doesn't matter.  I can PayPal you if you would be willing to hold for pickup.  Wouldn't be able to get over there until this weekend if that works.

I remember your handle from back when I first joined (2006?) - hope you are back with us at some point.

Finally it is beginning to look like in-tank antibiotic treatments are not entirely off the table. People said for a long time you couldnt do it because it would kill the beneficial bacteria in your tank. (Funny how many statements in our hobby get repeated endlessly without any evidence!) Turns out, at the right dose, they only improve things...

This is interesting.  Would likely be best to be done in combination with some before/after testing and supplementation (live sand?) from a trusted source I would think but could be the ticket to "reset" a seriously out of whack microbiome.  I picked up some live sand to give it a try since it seems like a logical step.  Also took the UV sterilizer out of service (needed a new bulb anyway).  Hopefully things start looking better at some point.

Thanks for the advise and insight Eli! @EMeyer

You’re too late for this contest. The rules were very simple.

You just needed to be a supporting member (24 dollars a year for individual or 30 dollars for a family) and have posted in a thread before December 1.

    Hahaha... the old "simultaneous post"!

I’m always up for winning prizes... what do I need to do.

Hi Whall, unfortunately too late for this particular drawing - you had to be a supporting member and reply in the original sign up thread that closed in November.  Make sure to keep an eye out for future events though.  As Emerald said, likely to have more of these online features in the coming year.
