  1. And use a nylon too.... my bag leaks from the top opening and the tied nylon works great as a second carbon bag.
  2. For some stubborn corals, I've pinched the base between a few pieces of rubble and superglued the rocks together since SG doesn't work well on softies. Could also rubberband the rocks too.
  3. I bought a dual Coralife about 1 year ago and worked great for VHO's, then switched to dual 250 halides about 3 months ago and it's still running strong. I know others have posted troubles with it before, but works great for me. Got it a Petsmart for like $29.99. Does day, evening, and moonlights. One of the best investments I got in this hobby. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753205&cp=&fbx=0&fbn=Type+1%7CTimers&f=PAD%2FBrand%2FCoralife&f=PAD%2FType+1%2FTimers&fbc=1&kw=coralife&parentPage=search&keepsr=1
  4. Drama Drama, forgot about the latest drama, but Brandon has moved on too. If someone bought this infomercial stuff, it would be great to know the results.
  5. Happy birthday. Don't forget to get your self something cool.
  6. Moonlight time, you know, the 30 lunar times zones specified.....no, I'm full of horse puky, haven't a clue but couldn't resist.
  7. Disaster? How about castration, now there's a sentence! Sorry, I'd pray for the victims instead.
  8. I helped take that tank apart and really didn't seem to be in bad shape at all to begin with. R3 wouldn't even have it, but I couldn't face the wife if I attempted bringing another one home.
  9. From what I remember reading from Mfg. sites it's a fire hazzard. Not worth the risk, plus now that you posted it, good luck collecting from the insurance company if they Google you
  10. So MBfeef, did you try this stuff out yet?
  11. It was $18 here too :(. Smells like fish eggs to me (scratch)
  12. Sounds like you're getting a little cycle going if it's cyano. I've had it both times I switched my sand.
  13. Great you got it home, now where are the pics? (nono) Did it fit into the office, or in the living room? Great to get it home eh?
  14. You can also get it cheap in a .7 ounce tube at your local hobby supply store for around $6. I think the small ones are .07? Problem with the bigger tube is it makes me feel like I can use more since it's there . Someone told me to use water on the tip to clean before putting the cap back on, but I use spit and it hasn't clogged up yet. Usually ended up poking holes in the tubes in subsequent uses.
  15. Some of us don't have a setup for CL, or choose not to. From recent experience, I have not had my second siphon break or have air collect since I've increased my flow in the return. I'd have to shake a u-tube and/or plug up one to and rattle the other to get air bubbles out every week; got very annoying having to lift/move my canopy every week. I've had no problems since increasing my return flow; it just pushes any bubbles right through. Personally I use a fairly quite Dart, but also goes up a 10' return line. I think our overflow boxes are a rare pain in the butt with users in this club. I guess you can use the trial and error philosophy, but that depends on your budget. Talk with the store you purchase from, see what they say and maybe you can do an exchange if the pump isn't enough for your needs. I like my peace of mind and don't bother checking the u-tubes anymore.
  16. If the siphon breaks, remember there's a chance of burning out a pump. I'd go with the bigger pump and use a ball valve on the output so you can adjust the flow to keep the utubes flowing and helps push the air bubbles through. It's impossible to make more flow from a low end pump. I believe it was Reef Central that had an excellent guide/table to see how much flow you get from a particular pump. You input size of tubing used, height to tank, elbows, etc. but I can't find it. Maybe someone else knows and will speak up.
  17. Check in the phone book for Tranquility Ponds, there is one in Beaverton and Clackamas for sure, might see if they have a store near you or where to get a few yards.
  18. It's a 125 gallon display with water about 1" from the top, but my sump is only 20 gallons kept about 9" deep. I would like to go with a bigger custom acrylic sump but that's a ways off. Don't forget to do a total power failure test as well 'cuz you know that's inevitable. If I had to do it all over again, I would do a bottom hole with built in overflow for ease of use. The only trouble I've had was when I didn't have enough flow going into the tank and air bubbles would fill the u-tubes and break siphon on one about every 2 weeks, no floods though. (I use 2 u-tubes). Once I doubled the size of my return line, it increased the flow much better to the tank and haven't had to redo the siphon yet. Was driving me nuts every few weeks, but it's been 2 months no trouble.
  19. [quote=Nyles;53897} Keep in mind your sump water will be on the floor if the siphon stops, this is the reason they are not recommended, due to air getting in there. ? I'm not following you there??? I think mine is failsafe now. If the overflow box/line is clogged, I keep the water level in my display low enough to the point it can handle all of the sump water without flooding (yes, might burn out pump from being dry). It's the same if my return pump dies/clogged, the sump level is low enough to handle all the overflow from the display without a flood. Make sense? Now if I had a huge sump w/ higher water levels, it could be a problem...this is why I've tested both types of failures to never flood again short of stupidity....cross my fingers.
  20. Here's a large local supplier I buy my pc accessories from. They have tons of fans and decibles are listed on each product. Their prices are excellent and great CS. I didn't see the silentx there, but tons of led options. Went in last week after a year and the owner still remembered my name. I don't know what shipping is, but couldn't imagine they're unreasonable. http://www.nwca.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.showGroup&GroupID=20
  21. To start the overflow tubes, I use a plastic baggie on each end, fill u-tube under water, hold baggies tight on each end and quickly stick into the overflow boxes. Might take a few tries. You could also use a pump and tubing the push water into the tubes in place. I would start by filling both tank and sump to the safe levels you want then you have a good idea to not have a flood. Personally, I do WC by siphoning from my display, the siphon boxes do their job to hold the siphon and the sump tube doesn't lose it either since the water stays higher when I turn off the return. Just make sure to do a moch power outage test. Turn off return and make sure the sump can handle the overflow from the display...no future floods that way, but be ready to power back on quick or take H2O from sump in a hurry. (hard lesson learned )
  22. Hey, I'm trying to incorporate some sort of ingenious shades for blocking my view of the tank when watching movies. The 6' tank and 65" Widescreen sit kitty corner so the entire tank reflects like a mirror on the glossy TV screen. It's all in perspective I'm sure I'm the only one who would do such a thing
  23. If it's made of the same material as the stuff Home Depot sells, no, it's around $3-8 depending on what size you buy. Funny commercial though. If things stay put, definitely let us know. I really doubt you can pull a semi truck with the stuff though, my frags fall off with a slight bump. I can't remember the brand I had bought at HD; think it was Oatey? http://www.oatey.com/Plumber/Shared/ProductGroupDetail/93/Epoxy+Putty.html Comparing price on Cyanoacrylate, the BSI superglue in a .7 oz tube is up to $12/13 at LFS, when the local hobby store sells the exact tube for $6. Hmmm, wonder if Michaels carries superglue gel. On a side note, I've always wondered if anyone has used Gorilla glue for underwater fragging so I did some digging and says to not get into local waters, has some toxicity to fish :( They do make Cyanoacrylate too though, but don't know price.
  24. I sure hope so, my wife asked me if our skunk shrimp was dead last night. 2nd molt in a month too. The night I put my fireshrimp in, he molted as well about 2 months ago, thought he was a gonner, pulled him out and it was hollow .
