1. Lots of people (that I've seen) advise against check valves, they can (and do) get stuck open. Better off to povide a siphon break for the return plumbing...good luck with the pump, I think I saw someone selling a magazine 9.5 recently, try a search...
2. 40b depends on your stand. it's the same width (F-B) as your 75, so maybe not. how about a 29g? I'm setting up my 90g (same footprint as your 75) with a 55 sump because the stand is 4'9" wide, so there's a little extra length for the long sump....just thoughts
3. why not just get a 40b from $1/g petco sale to replace the 20g sump? a couple cheapo pieces of plate glass for baffles and your in business!
4. fail-safe and silent overflow system. preferably with a coast-to-coast overflow box, but works either way. three-pipe minimum: http://www.beananimal.com/projects/silent-and-fail-safe-aquarium-overflow-system.aspx
5. I didn't think enough about the standpipe issue. I'd definitely put stand pipes on both, similar heights. Throttle one with a gate or ball valve, leave the over alone. If anything, I'd make the one with the valve a little lower than the main one. That way the one is guarranteed to stay wet for a siphon while the other can be a durso/whatever The stanpipes will also mean the sump wont overflow in a power outage and probably quiet down the 'waterfall' over the overflow beqciae it wont have to fall very far
6. my only thoughts: I would put a ball valve on one of the drains, throttle it back so the one pulls a full siphon, the other will make for a better durso (and will still pull lots of water if the siphoned one gets clogged), this will help it be quieter. I don't understand the question about the sump handling the drain...you should have a ball valve on the quiet one's outlet to determine the gph going through the drains... I'm not an expert, but the crack on the frame would terrify me, I'd def do something, not sure what the best plan would be As for the silicone, if the silicone that is there is strong enough to hold the tank together but might have a pinhole leak, then your plan makes sense to me. however, if you're worried about the structural integrity of the current seams, adding new silicone on top won't do a thing... very exciting! there's at least 3 of us doing similar sized builds right now, pretty fun!
7. It's in it's home with lights! I need to get the sump underneath and do the plumbing, then it can get some water!!! Question: the lights buzz pretty noticeably, is it just part of a warm-up cycle? It has old bulbs, is that why? it's an 8-bulb tek light EDIT: I apparently caught the picture during a lottery commercial...great :/
8. Thanks for the kind words, Jeramy! I'm really excited to get it set up and running!
9. Got the new bullheads. And plumbing roughes in on the tank in the garage, and got the last (I think) coat of paint on the supports (goes under the 'counter' on the left of the built-ins). Hopefully tomorrow I can get the tank in it's home and start finalizing the plumbing, maybe even get it wet!?
10. Here's the bulit-ins -well on their way. also redoimg the bulkheads on the 90 so it will fit on my stand, original plumbing adds about 5 inches of depth...
11. Got the built-ins up for the most part, need to put the 2x6 supports up under the left side (for the tank), and someday we'll put faces and doors on. Also had to get new bulkhead for the 90 cause it was 23" front to back the way the plumbing was glued on and my.shelf is only 22. should be about 21" once important done with the plumbing.
12. cleaning out the 90 (upside-down) and new-to-me sump (55g drilled near end for external return). and the built-in cabinets (not built in yet, but painted). we have now got 1/3 of it pretty much together, hoping to get at least another 1/3 done tonight, maybe more. in this pic, they are in the kitchen/dining area. I'm standing in the living room to take the picture.
13. Good to see it coming together!
14. doesn't actually have water yet, but should tonight or tomorrow...my wife's dragging me to the hunger games tonight, so that's limiting my time on the project excited about the dog, we've been waiting to get one since we bought the house 3 years ago, finally almost here! yay!
15. also, we will be getting a greyhound soon, this one is a likely choice:
16. ok, two pics (I guess just a teaser) the 90g display and the 55 sump: the 90 is upside-down on the right, 55 is on its end. both just got scrubbed with bleach/vinegar and rinsed out with the hose. Baffles and overflow box siliconed in now too, might do a leak test on those tonight, especially the overflow box. I'm just going to plug the drains and fill the box itself, if it can't support the water, I don't trust it anyways. and I'll just fill the center (fuge) portion of the sump, which will prove that the baffle to the return and from the drain sections are both tight. and the cabinets...in pieces: we will be sanding them again tonight and starting to assemble them, then they'll get a final coat of paint once they're together. all 3/4" cabinet grade plywood, fish tank's section will get extra 2x4 supports, will eventually be faced with 6/8" maple or birch or something (also painted white). and white doors on the base sections. These will be floor-ceiling and wall to wall, will be the entertainment center, fish stand and book/knick-knack shelf all in one.
17. I assume you'll update the list with who you've received $from...and I hope people will post pics once the frag is in their tank!
18. I agree on breefcase's ground rule, and if we're patient for delivery (for when I'm making a trip up), maybe skulls_n_sparrows would meet me at Hwy 34 and I5, and I can meet everyone in ptown somewhere?

20. ok, I've got the baffles and pieces for the C2C overflow, the sump (Kimberlee's old 55) should be showing up today, so I'll get some silicone and hopefully get some pics of the sump up soon. hoping this weekend I can get the 90 cleaned out (been collecting dust in the garage) and get the overflow box in. then finish the built-in cabinets, assemble them and get the tank in place...I'm super excited!!! (clap)(rock2)(fingers)
21. Maybe that could be my first official service to the group?
