  1. DOUGHHHDOH! Nice Catch!...I was looking at the wrong month...lol, You are correct, the name will be announced on Friday June 4th(naughty)
  2. So I went to town on my VERY large Golden Toadstool Leather coral this weekend, got 8 big frags from it. I was always curious why my Golden Toadstool never had "Fingered" tips on its tenticles, and my Tyree Green and my other White Toadstools did. Well when I got my Golden Toadstool it was on a little chunck of flat rock, and where I placed it it actually slowly slide and moved onto a different rock, but left a little chunck of its base behind, that is now growing into a new start. Whats strange is that new start has the little fingers at the ends of its tenticles, while all the frags I have cut from the "Cap" have never had those little fingers on the tenticles. So Amanda (my wife) had this theory that toadstools are made up of two parts the "Cap" and the "Stalk" if you frag a toadstool from the Cap, it won't produce those little fingers on the tenticles, and if you frag from the Stalk then they will. This has been the case for us, but I am curious what others who have fragged thier toadstools have exprerienced? This is just a theory, and has been the case with us, the frags that have come from the stalk have the little fingers and all the frags we have done from the cap just have little tenticles, with no fingers at the ends... I have been told that sometimes they don't extend thier little fingers at the ends of thier tenticles, and it sometimes depends on water quality, lighting, ect....but I have 3 different kinds of Toadstool Leather coral and the others do have little fingers on thier tenticles...which by my wifes theory would mean they where fragged from the stalk, and not the cap... What has been your expereince?
  3. I have a good chunck of Green Star Polyp that is like a round ball of it, bigger than a golf ball sized chunck, I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in it, just looking for Mushrooms and Zoanthids. I can get pics up this weekend....
  4. So I starting trying to get some Green Star Polyp to grow up the side of my tank...it was doing great for a while, and then it started "peeling" off the glass and falling back onto itself. I am going to cut the peice off, which is about 2-3 inches or so. I thought I would offer it up, its a fast grower, and won't be attached to anything, but I am sure where ever you place it, it won't take long to attach. It really pops green under actinic lighting...and if you have a higher K rating bulp they will be really nice and green. I will try and get some pics up this weekend, I will let this one go till Friday June 7th, and I will have my wife pic randomly the winner...and we can meet up in the portland area for delivery. As usual, place the phrase "Share the Love-Greenie Starie Polypie" in your reply....
  5. DOH! LOL....I did the same thing, but our two votes put him in the lead(scary)... This is just for fun right?...As I don't know either person.....don't want anyone (enforcer) at me...
  6. Curious what all is missing from the setup? Is there anything other than the VHO Ballast that it needs to get it up and running?
  7. I understand your concern, My other hobby is Herpetoculture, over the last year or so, there has been a massive push to ban the interstate sale and transport of certain species of snakes, also due to an issue the is isolated to Florida. See southern florida and the everglades is such a unique ecosystem in that almost anything tropical can live there, be it Ocars (South American Bass Type Fish) to tropical snakes, and there are reports that some snakes have taken a foot hold there and have begun breeding. Well there is a HUGE list of non-native species in florida, not just snakes, there are wild flocks of Australian and African and even South American Birds that have been breeding and the flocks are growing. The issues in southern Florida do no apply anywhere else in the united states, I know Florida has strick laws on many things, and I would have no doubt this law is inforced there. But here I honestly don't think something like that applies. And while the person you spoke too said differently, With all the Saltwater Stores in Oregon, Inlcuding Petco's...which is a Chain Store, I just can't imagine this being true. There is ABSOLUTLEY NO WAY they can control the average hobbiest transactions...there is no way. I know that in Herpetoculture, there was a BIG increase over the last few years of people that buy/sell/trade on a fairly large volume that where not businesses, and everybody and thier brother had a website with pics of available animals for sale. This was a major problem in that you didn't know who really was a business and who wasn't. Heck we even had a website at one point...until I realized we where operating like a business with no business license, so I shut it down. In florida, they really have to be careful of non-native species, if anything is released, there is a good chance it will survive and if enough are released that non-native species can become established and present a problem. That is the reason why they closely monitor everything, but up here most everything we all keep, is tropical, and absolutley NOT survive outside our aquariums. So there is non reason to closely monitor hobbiests here, unless someone is opperating like a business and moving large amounts of coral and fish, without a business licenses, then they might investigate you and your craigslist ads. But for the average hobbiests who offer other "Family" members a good deal on frags, they are not going to care about that. There is NO WAY for them to enforce things like that, even if it where true. I honestly think that the person you spoke with is incorrect, It might invovle things like having a fishing license if your carrying your catch from the river/lake home, But seriously, If I get pulled over, on my way home from the frag swap at Seahorse Aquarium this weekend, I guarantee you the officer is not going to ask for papers on the corals and fish I have in the cooler....I honestly don't think its something to sweat over here in the Pacific Northwest. Its one of those situations where if you go digging and asking a bunch of questions and those people you are asking questions to don't know, and have to do some research, your asking for trouble. I think its better to be ignorant and if you get into trouble, ask for forgiveness, rather than ask for permission and have to deal with all the potential hassle. If none of the Reef shops have heard of such thing, then I would imagine its nothing to worry about. As almost all the shops accept trade ins for credit, which would fall under bartering...right?
  8. I grew up in Oregon, and had never pumped my own gas before, and when we moved across the river to the Washington side I remember the first time I got gas, I must have sat there in my car for a good 20 minutes waiting for someone to come pump my gas, before someone walked by and said, "Hey Man, you know you have to pump your own gas right"....:p I was so embarrased...lol, I had no idea you could even pump your own gas, let alone had to do it... I do like having my gas pumped for me, its really convient...
  9. So last night, after the lights went out, I busted out the flashlight..and was checking out the nightlife in the tank, and got up real close and notice what to me looked like TINY tiny little tadpoles, they where EVERYWHERE...and I started to follow the mass of tiny squiggling dots up the rock and noticed one of the emerald crabs had its "Belly plate" (not sure what its called) popped open and was flapping it...and each time it flapped its belly plate, tons of these little things where flying out...I mean hundreds of these little tiny things where everywhere... I have had peppermint shrimp spawn, and nothing ever came of it...I have seen the shrimp with eggs, and I have seen the shrimp fan its flappers and launch simular things...I havn't been able to find much on Emerald crab breeding...anyone ever experienced anything like that before? I have never seen a crab release babies before...it was really interesting to watch...and it was cool cause I don't often do the flashlight thing...I just happened to do it last night...It was cool..

  17. I think undrtkr_00 means Magnetic vs. Electronic ballasts...The same bulb would look different if using a magnetic ballast vs. an Electronic one. I run a Electronic Ballast, and have liked it so far...
