  1. Welcome to the club Steve! This hobby is a blast. Tim's a great guy!
  2. That is very generous of you Jody! That's awesome. Teresa if you need any ideas for support groups and counseling, I know of some in the Portland area that are awesome.
  3. The meeting is at Frank Gruelle's house at 1pm. I will pm you the details.
  4. David, I have a copy of The New Aquarium. Very simple and quick reading. If you go to the meeting today, you can borrow it.
  5. Pico's are tiny tiny tanks even a gallon? They're wild! Had a bad hair algae problem when the FOWLR tank was cyclng it looked like oscar the grouch drowned in the tank (laugh). Sea hare cleaned it all up in only a few days. I have to find a new home for it soon though because they need a lot of food and it will starve otherwise.
  6. Where the hell were you and newfisher when I needed you to help set up my 150 FOWLR?DOH! I thought my arms were going to fall off trying to help carry the thing. Glass is way heavier than acrylic! and tanktop74's about as much help lifting things as my corgi!(laugh)
  7. You actually may have to boil the rock. Our 150 FOWLR has a few aiptasia. We bought the tank used and the rock was stored in a dark bin for almost a year and there were still a few buds of aiptasia. I like the idea of getting a Klein's butterfly. Good idea coralreefer but how will it do in an agressive tank. Right now we have a baby clown trigger, puffer and juvenille formosa wrasse.
  8. Very nice Jules. My sump is bigger than your tank . You ever see pictures of the pico tanks? Don't you hate the cycling process?
  9. I didn't know there was two different peppermint shrimp. Good to know.
  10. From a Newbie to a Newbie my advice would be to stock lightly and try to go bigger. (looking back the 55 gallon was way overstocked. I had more fish in that than I do the 150 gallon and for the most part they did great) I did lose one firefish because the other one did pick on it. If you have the room, now is the time to buy. Here and on craigslist there are so many good deals. Bigger tank means less swings in temperature, ph, etc and less and the less fish the less problems you are going to end up having. It's not about winning the guiness book of world records on fish stocking. It's about having fun and dead fish and corals are no fun!
  11. Ocellaris clowns are a great newbie fish. I bought a pair of babies and lived a long time without problems until I traded them out for my black and white ocellaris pair. 12 gallons is kinda small. I started with a 55 gallon and a few months later got a 29 gallon nano and then upgraded the 55 gallon to an 150 gallon reef and then upgraded the 29 gallon to an 150 gallon FOWLR (nutty) Between you and me Jules... (Jgf's crazy(nutty) look at his signature....just kidding(laugh) I'm fairly new too but have learned lots just from being on this site. The best thing I did in the beginning was buy things from people here and meet them face to face and look at their tanks. I learned a great deal that way but I still have a lot to learn.
  12. Ah Mick already lecturing? I was gonna give Jules at least a day before I starting giving out unsolicted advice!(laugh)
  13. Welcome to the addiction!(clap)
  14. That's wonderful Clay! Love all the positive energy you bring to this forum. Pretty brave to share it with the group! At least with reefing as an addiction you have something to show for. It keeps me from losing money at poker.
  15. LMAO(laugh) I would have loved to have seen the nonedited version Andy.(laugh) I don't think the naming thing is going to go away (too much money involved and too many people willing to pay).It reminds me of the fashion world. A pair of jeans can be 300 bucks just because of a designer label when it's not any better than the cheaper ones. I just like to name my unnamed chalices for fun kinda like I name my fish.
  16. Beautiful fish congratulations! Thanks for sharing!
  17. Good point Rick. They can also die in the molt. I had one do that so sad (sad). We haven't had that problem now since we started dosing with iodine.
  18. I'm a newbie in this saltwater world. It's been almost a year now.(clap) Reefing reminds of how people are with cars. Does this sound familiar? Someone comes over to get a frag and asks to look at your tank which of course you can't wait to show off and hear the ooohs and ahhhs. Oh nice dendro (hubcaps), wow those are interesting zoas (pinstripes), I've never seen that chalice (neon lighting) is that the rare (insert fancy name to increase the price) chalice? Then.. can I look at your lighting? Are those the new super actinic vhos with the 200W metal halides? Then... lets' open the stand doors to look at the "engine". Ohh that's the new dolphin 2000 pump that could provide flow to the entire north face of Waikiki if it needed to. And the new amex controller with the new aftermarket add on that picks the children up from school too.(laugh) Gotta love this hobby!
  19. Hmmm "memberized"(scratch) Sounds like a painful surgical procedure.(laugh) You will get an email from Chief. It happend pretty quickly for me like that same evening. Welcome to the dysfunctional family!(clap)
  20. I would be careful about adding more firefish in that size tank. We had 2 in the 55 gallon and one bullied the other one to where it wouldn't come out and eat and it finally died. They can be good in groups but it smaller tanks they can fight. I think your clean up crew is fine for that size tank. I didn't have but one cleaner , 3 to 4 hermits, one emerald crab and a few snails in that size tank.
  21. Speaking of UV sterilizers. What does everyone hink about them. I was thinking about getting one for the 150 FOWLR tank at least.
  22. Michael you crack me up! It seems whenever you have to do a job you don't like you start a new thread!(laugh) Is that your way of procrastinating?
  23. I totally get it. I finally had to explain to the people at work that this site is kind of like "Facebook for saltwater fanatics" That was the language they understood. But you are correct , I wish I had a coral for everytime I heard "You paid what for that?!!"
  24. Ah Ca2OR you missed a golden opportunity to really mess with him. For example, my tank goes all the way under the house the wood is to give it more support. Why don't you go under my crawl space to check it out? Or yeah those Duncans are made of rubber. You can DIY at home just get a pair of rubber gloves, scissors and green spray paint.
