  10. Some of those less fortunate seem happy enough though...
  11. Great article. Nice to see there are more temperate corals here than we previously thought. I was only familiar with the solitary Orange Cup Coral (Balanophyllia elegans) http://www.divebums.com/FishID/Pages/cupcoral.html which ranges from SE Alaska to Baja California. I collected some a few years ago in the Monterey Bay area, but they were short lived. Hopefully we may see some of these newly discovered ones at the Oregon Coast Aquarium one of these days!
  12. just in case you weren't blessed with those "special" teeth - you can buy a set here... http://www.billybobteeth.biz/products/index.htm
  13. Fish Weight Calculator I have a worksheet with diagrams to calculate the weight of a fish, but do not have a working scanner. Instead, I will give descriptions. Laterally-compressed Fish: Butterfly; Trigger Torpedo-shaped Fish: Fire Goby; Eel --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TO CALCULATE FISH BODY WEIGHT, follow these steps. For laterally-compressed fishes; 1. Draw a circle that fits roughly within the side body dimensions of the fish. 2. Measure the diameter of the fish in centimeters. 3. Divide the result by 2 to get the radius.4. Multiply the radius by itself to get the radius squared. 5. Multiply the radius squared by 3.14 6. Multiply the result by the thickness of the fish. The result of your calculations is the weight of the fish in grams. For torpedo (cylindrically) shaped fishes; 1. Draw a circle that fits the widest part of the fish's body. 2. Do the calculations outlined in steps 2 through 5 for the laterally-compressed fish. 3. Measure the fish's length and multiply it by 0.75 4. Multiply the results of steps two and three. The result is the fish's weight in grams. To convert to ounces, divide the weight in grams by 28.35 Copyright© 1988 by Richard M. Segedi
  14. According to the seminar I took a few years ago, one should not place more than one pound of living organisms (the emphasis was mainly on fish... also use of denitrification filtration, such as using liverock, was not included in this calculation.) per 100 gallons... or 1.6 ounces per 10 gallons. That's why you must figure tank loading capacity by weight to system volume. This calculation applies to the ability of a system's biological filtration to process waste. Other factors that affect what can be in the tank include water volume turnover rate, the amount of surface area of biological filtration media, compatibility of tank occupants, and territorial requirements for a particular animal. The old rule of thumb about about so many inches of fish per so many gallons of water can only be applied to very small adult fish. A 2 inch damsel, for example, may weigh 6 to 8 times as much as a one inch damsel. That means that 2 inch fish is 6 to 8 times the bioload than the 1 inch fish.
  15. Actually, our unit now is only 6000 BTU, but our apt. is partly below ground-level and surrounded by trees. Our previous A/C unit which finally needed to be replaced a couple of years ago, was 12,500 BTU. We needed that size as the 2 Bdrm. House we lived in 11 years earlier was in full sun. We returned two previous units (800 and 10,000 BTU)at first, and bought the largest one we could buy at the time that was still 120V. It kept our house in the low 70's even on the hottest days. Be sure to circulate air thoughout the house with some good sized box fans to keep the other rooms cooled.
  16. Go with a unit closer to 12,000 to 12,500 BTU. Our 2 Bdrm Apt. stays nice & cool even when it get over 100F outside.
  17. I see you have had the Copperband about 2 months. Did he look malnourished when you got him, or has he progressively been losing weight?
  18. Yeah. That is awesome! Your tank has really filled out in the last 7 months!
  19. DOH! I suppose the only close to accurate comparison would be to use the same camera on the same tank with the same setting using different T5 bulbs. A topic/workshop on aquarium photography was suggested a while back. Anyone got some background in this willing to give a talk at a meeting sometime?
  20. (worthless) Anyone have pics of their tanks with these different T5 bulb combos?
  21. Anyone is welcome to bring snacks to share. Sodas, Chips, Cookies, KFC, Sides of BBQ Ribs, etc.
  22. I have said this before, and it looks like I have to say it again - Woody has done probably more for keeping the club going than any other one person outside of myself and Ryan Jensen. When family illness a few years ago made it impossible for me to remain as Chairman of the Marine Study Group. I was unable to find anyone else to keep the local Marine Aquarium club going, , Woody took over the monthly meetings. Along with the help of Alice Hart and others, the group continued and eventually PNWMAS was formed. People tend to take for granted that there has always been a reef club here. It is only because of hard work and dedication of people like Woody at Seahorse Aquarium, and Bob Rosenthal at Gateway Tropicals, that helped make it possible to have a meeting almost every month for the last ten years. A few of us that have been around awhile are able to see the big picture and can see what petty sniveling can do to tic someone off or try to damage their reputation in spite of all the hard work they have done. In my opinion, Woody has done more than his share to support the club. It is my hope that he will again be one of our Sponsors.
  23. I have read many articles read many articles about how GW was ignoring similar conservation issues, such as global warming and it's effect on world reefs. Perhaps due to pressure from scientists, environmental groups, and the general public, he now has made a major contribution for protecting our environment. I commend him on this. http://www.oceanfutures.org/
  24. I tried it Nyles. No difference.
