  1. I have read a few articles and forum threads about EcoSystem Aquarium® using Miracle Mud®, made popular by Leng Sy. This page contains a few links to various articles. http://www.ecosystemaquarium.com/ While analysis of the mud has been done, and some people will argue that there is nothing special about this mud, it does seem to contain high concentrations of iron and iodine, also it contains a fair amount of silica sand (30%). http://www.reefs.org/library/article/mm_analysis.html Many people have had great success with the system. I would like to give it a try one of these days.
  2. Thumbnails open as a download, then viewed in Photoshop at the PNWMAS site only. It opens seamlessly at TRT and all other forums.
  3. This could only happen in Texas... http://www.jibjab.com/JokeBox/JokeBox.aspx?Id=6290&JokeId=5599
  4. I have found True Value Hardware Stores to have many of the nylon fittings I have needed. You can always check with Precision Marine http://www.precisionmarine.com/index.html or call their Toll-Free number 888-825-6716
  5. Hopefully your (unofficial)leaving reefkeeping is only a temporary one. You will always have a home here with this motley crew. We salute you and all the work you have done.
  6. Glad to hear he is doing well. Bob had his store originally on NE 102nd Ave. when I first met him around 1974 (he had it way before that!). In1986, after he moved his shop into his home, he was one of the first stores in Orego.n to carry reef supplies. I could talk for hours with that guy! He even bought tank raised clowns from Martin Moe in the 1970's! I have invited Bob and Trudy to our PNWMAS barbecue in the past without much luck, perhaps some other people could encourage them to make it this year.
  7. From what I have read and from personal experience, an established DSB should be disturbed as little as possible. My most successful moving of a DSB was accomplished my removing everything from the tank including as much water as possible by siphoning or pumping. This was done by pushing back a small area of sand in the front corner of the tank. After relocating the tank, slowly refill with water as carefully as possible, trying not to disturb the substrate. A dinner plate set on the bottom of your tank will help disperse the water during the initial refill. My experience moving a DSB by buckets resulted in a major hair algae/diatom bloom. I'm sure there was a considerable die-off of microbes in the DSB, along with whatever may have been realeased from the anaerobic bed into the water column. If you must move your sand this way, be ready for large water changes. Keep a skimmer running and do frequent changes of activated carbon. The use of a canister filter will be very helpful in removing particulate matter. (Removing and replacing the patio door may be less frustrating than dealing with your tank if it crashes!) 10. Check with your city ordinances and see what the laws are. It looks like even places like San Bernadino County, Calif., that I remember having lots of wide open desert space for riding, are even having similar problems now. http://www.vvdailypress.com/2004/109992199363391.html (arrow in the spokes idea sound good... I always like those coyote/roadrunner type tactics)
  11. If you are trying to stop illegal noisemakers(firecrackers, cherry bombs, M-80s) and cops wont help, call your local Fire Dept. ...although if your neighbors get stuck with heavy fines, you may be making enemies doing so.(brick) (hitme)
  12. We want to thank everyone who showed up for the meeting and election, and a special thanks to those that brought us frags for the restarting of our reeftank! I stopped by our apartment Manager's Office this morning to return the keys and thanked her on behalf of PNWMAS for letting us have the use of the Community Center. She said we are welcome to have use of the center in the future. John & Constance
  13. Have you seen the one about talking cats? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7199158973758073420
  14. yeah... like the cat that get "stuck" up a tree, and need to be "rescued". lol I know there is some kind of a cat conspiracy against humans.

  16. Swab the affected area with vinegar to neutralize the venom, then apply topical hydrocortizone cream to reduce inflammation.

    Funny!

(clap) too funny I've already printed a copy of that(to give to the Pastor at our Church who just had by-pass surgery), and now getting ready to e-mail it to friends!
  18. "In 1722, a Dutch explorer, Jacob Roggeveen, sighted and visited the island. This happened to be on a Sunday, Easter Sunday to be precise, and the name stuck: Easter Island (Isla de Pascua in Spanish)." http://www.crystalinks.com/easterisland.html
  19. Theron - it looks like you have algae of the genus Dictyota. Sea Urchins have been known to help keep it under control.
  20. I have some Caulerpa prolifera, C. serrulata, and Halimeda. Nu2 - I'd like some of that critter infested racemosa too.
  21. The "Seafood Watch" West Coast Seafood Guide 2006 leaflet that Krux had available at the last meeting has been very useful whenever we buy seafood at the store. I would like to get get a few more to give to some of the employees in the seafood/meat dept. where we shop. Hopefully the word will make it to the buyers for their stores. Other suggestions about what we can do to to increase public awareness of the situation of threatened species and health benefits and risks of certain seafoods are at the Monterey Aquarium Website: http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp
  22. No - the world dosen't end in 2012... only the Mayan Calendar! lol (icon) (fish)
