Hi All,

We're going to have a brief presentation and Q&A on dosing trace elements based on ICP results at 2:00 PM during the Upscales Fish and Reptiles club meeting. The meeting will run from 1-3 PM.

I'll be discussing how I use ICP results and Captiv8/Reefblueprint products to tweak the trace elements on the below mixed reef.

I hope to see many of you there! Also, don't forget about the raffles and group buys at the meeting. You won't want to miss it!

@reefrun I uploaded my presentation slides  to this post.

You can download the Captiv8 ICP calculator tool here:

https://www.captiv8aquaculture.com/copy-of-captiv8-home

You can purchase supplements and the $20 trace element pack that I mentioned here:

https://www.saltwateraquarium.com/reef-blueprint-isol8-minor-and-trace-element-pack-100g-captiv8-aquaculture/

You can purchase Oceamo ICP tests here

1) ICP-OES:

2 ICP-MS

https://andremueller.e-junkie.com/product/1758008/Reef-Moonshiner26230393Bs-ICP-MS-Test

As I said at the meeting, you can use any ICP test for the trace element calculator. Travis/Upscales carries the ATI ICP test and other local stores also carry ATI or Triton. Any one of these will work. My own preference is Oceamo because they offer Mass Spec analysis as well as standard ICP.

I'm happy to answer answer questions in this thread. Please tag me so I see it.

Andy

Great presentation, I was considering the triton system on the tank I'm upgrading to (120 gallon). I was previously using 3-part without trace elements on my nano. This method seems very promising at a lower cost.

I should say that dose the ATI Essentials Pro 2 part, in addition to the Captiv8 products.

The ATI Essentials stuff is like Triton, but comes in fewer bottles and is cheaper.

You can find the ATI 2 part at prettyucj any of the local shops or online.

Thanks Andy for a great presentation, I'll definitely be looking into Captiv8 for some trace element dosing! And thanks to Travis for hosting us!

Cheers,
Andrew

@Lexinverts - I enjoyed your talk, and am still wrapping my head around Captiv8.  What I hadn't understood previously is Captiv8 has formulated their elements to be mixable into a single solution, which you then can auto-dose all month long.

By contrast, the MoonshinersReef system I'm following does not let you mix elements - explained in the handbook.   The system is, once a month take an ICP.  Enter results into excel.  Results are broken into two parts.   First, a group of elements to just add Right Now.  (eg, 100ml of Barium, 27ml Strontium, ...)   Second, a group of elements (called Daily's) that are intended to be added every day (eg, 12 drops iodine, 10ml iron, ...).   Dailies are Dosable, but it's like 6 elements, I'd need 6 dosers.  I've been doing it by hand.

Like Captiv8, Moonshiners system works with Any other method you'd like to do all month long.  Do water changes, Don't.   Supplement with some other elements along the way, or Don't.  Use 2part, Calcium Reactor, Kalk - doesn't matter.    The excel calculator based on ICP test at the end of the month, helps balance out what else is needed.   In my case, no regular water changes, and using a Calc Reactor and Kalk with my ATO.  Every week, I'm adding KZ Coral system 1/2/4 (historical reason, am trying to stay steady)

What I appreciate about reef moonshiners system, is the Handbook.  Even if you don't follow the system, it's worth reading it.

I've also spent the $5 for the coral coloration ebook from Andre (creator of moonshiners)
