    Algae everywhere

I too have been battling dino. This is what I have been doing and it seems to be working. 1. Use turkey baster to blast off the dino off rocks every other day. Only had to this three times. 2. Increase flow and move my wave up closer to the surface so it would suck in some air. It's noisy. Got this tip from Erin at All Things Aquarium. That's suppose to help bond the dino to bubbles to get them to the sump for skimmer to remove. 3. Wet skim so it drips every couple secs. Fills my 5 gal skimmer waste bucket every 1.5 days. Top off fresh salt if sump level gets too low. 4. Grow algae scrubber/cheato and clean weekly. Take all cheato out and rinse out the dino weekly. I still feed my fish as usual. Dino is not completely gone but doesn't cover the rocks and corals anymore and just a little on the sandbed during the day. Good luck!

Need advice on adding my first clam

Clams need a lot more light than sps corals. Once acclimated to your light spectrum, place it as close to the lights as possible. Always give a new clam a good scrub with toothbrush to remove any pests. I would not place any new clams directly on live rock because few weeks later if you discover your clam have pyramid snails, you'll need to be able to remove the clam to give it another scrub, possibly monthly. My experience is these pyramid snails can survive about 2 weeks without a host. It takes about 2-4 weeks for pyramid eggs to develop into easily visible snails. After you're sure your tank is free of pyramid snails, then I would place the clam directly on live rock.
  7. I'm super excited about this new ReeFi product line. I've finished designing the prototype board and have send it off to get it made. Once testing is completed, I will work with manufactures to get it mass produced. No more sweat shop from my garage. haha Here are some sneak preview on specs... More unique spectrums - same old favorites plus new requests. Every spectrum diodes can be controlled, no more grouping color spectrums. WiFi controlled and possibly Bluetooth as well. Either regular display or touch display. More max power for larger and deeper tanks. Multiple light sources to combat shadowing. Modern sleek look. Sensors to notify when it's time to clean off the fan dust for optimal performance. http://www.reefi-lab.com/index.php/2018/02/16/new-reefi-led-products-design-completed-prototyping-and-testing-now/

New ReeFi LED product in prototype and testing phase

I've been redesigning to make it more slim which require custom heatsink cooling solution. At the same time, hard to keep the cost down with custom parts. These couple months, I've been redesigning over and over again to keep cost down and keep the profile slim. I've gone through 5 completely different PCB designs and several heat solution designs. I think I'm getting close. What do you guys think of plastic enclosure with full glass bottom? This would be closest to MacBook/Surface Pro look with uni-body. I play with the idea of uni-body aluminum but the cost is way too prohibiting. Other option is to use metal enclosure but will have exposed screws and seams. Also, what are you guys take on light spillage? Personal, I hate light spillage but I also like to hang my lights high up for easier access to inside the tank. I've design a parabola lens for each individual LEDs but this will increase the overall height by 10-12mm. This is my latest mock up. Daniel

    Fun with 3D printer

I have an old Eshopp large cone skimmer but the magnet part of the impeller have cracked. Replacement impeller was a bit pricey so this weekend I decided to upgraded it with my Jebao needle/mesh conversion kit. Bought a Jebao DCP-10000. Also made a custom bubble diffuser. Fun with 3D printer

wow.. 4 printers! Which ones did you get? I'm using Robo 3D R1+ which is based off Marlin firmware. There are a lot of new features added in the latest version but I haven't bother upgrading the firmware yet. Yes, a lot of TLC is required. There are a lot of settings (1st layer z offset, extrusion offset, and calibrating xyz distance) to figure out. Once they are good, I haven't had to touch those. Have you run into PLA clogging? I ended up making an oiler and seem to fix it. I though of addition filament detector so it would pause when it ran out of filament until I change it out then resume. Now, I just guess if there's enough to finish the print. Which slicer are you using? I tried different ones but I still like Slic3r the most. It's probably the most complex in terms of settings but I kinda like that control over simplicity, but I wish they had option to delete part of the support for complex prints.

New ReeFi LED product in prototype and testing phase

The bulk of the cost is the LEDs and components. Even just importing just the LEDs and components in the USA for assembling will still incur the 25% tariff on the bulk of the cost. Plastic injection is all done by machine, so cost difference is very little if those parts are made in China or USA, but if made in China I can use some recycled plastic vs 100% virgin plastic to be more eco-friendly. We send most of our recycled plastic oversea.

I am trying very hard to bring top of the line specs at very competitive price. Just found out the trade war with China is on... 25% tariff! Just about to work out all the production issues and now this. [language filter]! 😡 http://money.cnn.com/2018/05/29/news/economy/china-tariffs/index.html Sorry for my rant...

Dodge, you're welcome to my social box or anyone wants to borrow it. I don't plan to add any fish in my DT in the near future.

With so many tangs which can get very aggressive to newcomers, I always recommend putting new fishes in a clear acrylic social box. Only when existing fishes stop attacking the social box then release the new fish at night when tank is darkest. Sent from my SM-N950U1 using Tapatalk
  17. I first got two of these at CnC in May of 2017. At the time, they were already larger than the usual black trochus snails, maybe close to 1" size. Within a few months, I noticed they grow pretty fast and was intrigued to find more info. As a kid growing up in Taiwan, my parents would take us kids to the coast. I remember street vendors selling large polished triangular snails which resembled these guys. After some googling (which is harder without know what these guys are called), I found that they are being activity breed with giant clams. Fully grown can reach 15cm across. Mine have grown to slightly smaller than baseball size. According to G.A.HESLINGA and A. HILLMANN, they can be easily captive breed. Here the doc I found: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwZ8-4sMhZ0ONWI1MzdjZTctMWUxMy00MzQ5LWI2ZTgtMGE3MDNkM2ZhOWYy/edit?hl=en I'm eager to see if mine would reach 15cm and when they will start spawning. Just eye balling, the 2 largest one's growth rate seems to be slowing down. Got 2 more several months back which are starting to catch up to the big ones. For their size, they are surprisingly "gentle" when moving through my coral frags. I think it would be fun to do a growout competition on these guys. Hehe Sent from my SM-N950U1 using Tapatalk

Yes, I made the 3D model myself. Hardest part was trying to get a good measurements. It was close enough to make a good fit. Sent from my SM-N950U1 using Tapatalk

The original skimmer also have a diffuser but it wouldn't fit the upgraded pump. The main upgrade was going from small AC pump to more powerful DC pump. With pump now outside the skimmer, there is a bit more area for bubbles in the skimmer body.

    Potassium Nitrate Dosing?

No point dosing potassium nitrate if you're running GFO and carbon. GFO will just strip out the potassium until GFO is depleted. I suggest removing GFO and carbon reactors. If nitrate and potassium are still zero after a week or so, reduce cheato photo period.

Can rapid growth cause color fade?

If your tank is big enough, add a pair of triggerfish and you don't have to worry about food being left uneaten. ;-) I go though about 2lb of DIY frozen seafood plus 1lb of flakes every 5-7 months, but I have 37 hungry fishes. This is after I cut down on some feeding cause I was worry that some fish might be over weight. Sent from my SM-N950U1 using Tapatalk

So each LED diodes have an about 120degs spread. Lenses are good to focus the light down to more narrower spread like 90degs or even 60degs. This way manufacturers can use less led diodes to achieve high PAR at 12"-24" deep. However, you will get more disco lighting effect. One of my main concern is light bleed without canopy. I think adding a shadow reflector between the LEDs and frost glass will prevent blinding light bleed when mounted at proper height. Sent from my SM-N950U1 using Tapatalk
