  1. Looks to me that it was getting beat up a bit.  The risk now is secondary infection.  Antibiotics would be a good move.  In a QT tank would be best.  I have a 20g long setup if you need to borrow it.  I have a fair amount of antibiotics as well.

I would post your pics on humblefish.com. for expert advice.

  2. like I said, tapp plastics is absolutely criminal in their pricing.

Tapp wants $300 for a 30x48 piece of 1/2 starboard.  Piedmont wants $221 for an ENTIRE 4x8 sheet..... That is over 400% more expensive....

Can you DIY a roller that uses standard 2 ply toilet paper for my new build? that sure would save me a lot of money in the long run...

    Thanks!

I buy filter paper in a 36" by 300' roll and cut it down.

  4. I have said many many many times how completely psychotic my achilies was. I found him fashioning a shiv in the back of the display one day.  Mine didn't pace but he would viscously attack ANY new fish in the tank.  angel fish?  KILL!!!   blenny..  KILL!  who attacks a blenny?   Dude was out of control.  I had to add 3 new big tangs at once to get any new fish in there.

My guess is he will chill out over time.

But for the record, Achilies and powder blues still hold the top of the list for aggressive tangs.   People thing the sohal is agressive....Pffff  homey got nothing on the PB.

  5. thanks john.  Is the motor geared or direct drive?  The torque required to get the mat moving is actually pretty shocking.  I am using a power window motor with a reduction gear.  I think the issue is that my paper has too much surface area.  It does do an incredible job of cleaning gunk out of the water though.

  6. I think I may steal that design to make adjustments to my design.  I see that one side is completely blocked.  Which is a good thing.   The wet filter paper really tends to "stick" to the sides when there is a lot of water backing up on top of the paper.

  7. I have a 12" wide DIY model.  I love mine.  It pulls sooo much stuff out of the water.  You do not want to be smelling the wet rolls.  I need to tweak my design a bit, sometimes the paper gets bound up or the motor is strong enough when the roll gets to big.   That is the price you pay with DIY.  I spent $40 for a roller mat thay can handle 4,000 gph turn over.

  8. one word of caution about just unplugging stuff from the apex, just have a mental checklist of things that are not supposed to run when you shut an item off via the apex.  You could say... just unplug your main pump because you can't find your phone, then go to the bathroom and come back to find that you spooled through a whole roll of filter floss because the water level was so high due to no pump.

I mean.. that didn't happen to me, I would never do something like that.  I heard about a guy...ummmm, on facebook.  yeah it was this facebook guy.

  9. The bristle worms and snails would be easy to deal with before you transfer.  Get a warm tote of saltwater.. eveb a large cooler woyld work.  Take the old rock, cover all the snails with glue and set a trap for the worms.  In a week or so of inspecting and treating you should be good to go.  Obviously add some food or ammonia to feed everything.

  10. I have seen high head pumps in the 2,400 gph range but for that flow and head, it is either AC or the pump you have.  While not as elegant of a solution as dialing down the power, you can control the output of the hammerheead with a gate valve, the backpressure is not harmful to the pump (says the folks at reeflo).  I would be shocked if they don't honor the warranty if they don't however I have a hammerhead with no seals I would be willing to part with.

  11. Willipa is an electrician, and Willipa says....   It is caused by stray current, ergo.. your pump is currently leaking electricity into your tank, no matter what speed you set it at.  I would contact them for a replacement.  This does happen overtime and the reason I buy Jebao pumps.  You could have 6 jebaos sitting on the shelf for replacements for the same cost as the abyzz.  Hopefully they will hook you up, they do have a 10 year warranty if you registered it.

Good luck and get that pump out of the water.

  12. mine has never worked properly.  angled, upside down, right side up, wires together, wires seperated.   I solved it by building a system with around 800 gallons of water.  Hard to change the salinity with that much water.
