  1. yes, I realize that I'm doing the equivalent of starting to race cars by climbing in an F1 car but I'm going to give it some serious effort and attention and I will start with some Zoa and easier sps.

I have a 70 gallon frag and 30 gallons of sump.  I'm running filter socks, curve 5 skimmer and I'm thinking fuge with rock.

I will also dose 2 part when the time comes.

any suggestions? I am also planning to attend the meeting this weekend to pick up any tips :)

  2. so for my first foray into reefing I am building a frag tank this weekend.  it's going to be 4x2x14".  My return pump is around 100gph and I was going to use two outlets with the swirly thing a ma bobs on them.

I want to focus on SPS so I thought a wavemaker or two would be good.  I'm going to get a jabeo but can't decide if two rw-4 (nano tank wavemakers) or a single rw-8 would be better?

any thoughts?  I'm super super super excited to get this up and running soon!

    thanks !

  3. I can build high end cabinentry but honestly, the time commitment is too great.  Working with wood is much more demanding.  Not to get off topic, but dealing with wood grain, mitered joints, and expansion and contraction in humid tank environments is quite complex when dealing with hardwoods.   I may spend 2 hours picking out wood for a piece of furniture with acrylic I just say "give me a sheet of 1/2" cell cast".

  4. hello there,

I am a new reefer but not new to the aquarium addiction. I'm building an arcylic frag tank and sump next week and the idea dawned on me... I could trade my skills for some decent frags.

I have build about 5 tanks and about 8 sumps so far and all have never leaked a single drop.  it's not difficult to build these things but I do have a very high quality cabinet saw and router which ensures good results.

you buy the acrylic (it can be CHEAP at this place in Tualatin) and I'll build it.  or I could pay for everything if you have a ton of frags... PM me if you are interested.

    Cheers

  5. thanks for the welcome.  My girlfriend definately loves the odd fish.  you have never seen someone so excited about plecostomous in your life   :)

I clicked around and couldn't find any info on the meeting?  I would love.to come introduce myself.  I will probably start a build thread for my tank and sump.

right off the bat... what do people use to elevate frag trays?..

  6. Well, it seems I am launching into yet another hobby to consume that extra little bit of free time I have.  I had a saltwater tank as a kid and last year went a little overboard on african cichlids.  So I have two 110 gallon all male tanks, a 75 mbuna tank, a 40 with a rapidly growing jaguar cichlid and 75 with a pair of green terrors (oh, and a mixed 40 gallon planted and of course, the girlfriends 5 gallon pea puffer tank).  Phew!

Anywho.. I ultimately want something in the 120 or 180 gallon range but I don't have the room for it right now (and I want to have some nice corals for when I set it up) So I am going to build a 4x2x16" frag tank with a 40 gallon sump and see if I can be successful growing polyps and sps.  I have an 8 bulb T5ho light, bubble magnus skimmer, ranco temp controller, and a blue tooth bluelab guardian temp, DS, and ph monitor. I plan on having live rock and chateo (spelling?) in my sump.  Flow wise I have the sump return pump and a jabaeo wave maker.  I may need one more but I suppose I can set it up and see how it works.

I'm going to pick up a sheet of 1/2" acrylic tomorrow and should have the tank and coast to coast overflow done by some time next week.

Anyways.. I'm excited to meet some fellow reefers!!!

  7. Hey Josh!  I am new to the forum and saltwater as well.  I live close in NE (15th and Fremont). I'm setting up a large frag tank to grow out some corals for a display tank that I will eventually put in a new house.  I currently have too many tanks for my current house  !! (500 gallons of freshwater).

We should get a drink and talk aquariums :)
