  1. I really like most varieties of GSP when it is isolated  =)

I completely agree. Any star polyp really are a beauty if on an isolate rock. I think they just get a bad rap from being invasive. I would love to see a single rock with red, blue and green on it. Maybe with different eyes.

Does anyone have star polyps with other colored eyes besides white? Or even the branching ones. I have never seen them before.

  2. Yeah, even those blue ones you don't see as often. Maybe because they are slower growing?

For how fast star polyps grow, it makes me believe there are great diversity of them in the wild. They can grow quick enough and are hardy enough to mutate and create other morphs in a reasonable time. Kind of like xooanthids.

  3. Hey everyone,

Maybe this is an oxymoron, but is there rare star polyps? I know a lot of people don't care for green star polyps, but it is kind of funny to think about the rare star polyps. Are there any and do you have pictures?

Maybe one day star polyps will be the fad.

  4. I'm a newbie saltwater aquarium person. I'm finding the learning curve to be kind of steep. Has anyone thought of having educational classes/lectures on the fundamentals of aquarium chemistry, testing, physics, etc ? I would totally love some guidance and education. Anyone???

I have definitely thought of taking marine microbiology classes, but it is expensive. I think one of the best ways to become informed is by listening to people with experience, and take everything they say with a grain of salt. Since every tank is different, not any single thing is always a solution. Commonly, many things play a factor.

If you still have a drive to learn, Kahn Academy is one of the few places that offer lessons for free. Not only is it free, but what they say is correct and fact checked. There is a lot of ill information out there that I think you shouldn't be spending your time on. I guess it is the internet. Hehe. I advise this to a lot of my tutees.

If you are into traditional lectures, homework, reading material, tests and projects, then MIT Open Courseware is the place for you. Plus, I think they even mail you a legitimate certificate if you complete the course series. Their lecturers are some of the best in the nation and they are online for anyone with a computer.

Although I will say it again, experience in this hobby is invaluable. I hope you can make the time to come to a meeting. I am sure we will be happy to answer any question you have (unless we don't know). :P

  5. I can't tell if that is a DIY 3D-printer or if it is commercial. The heated base plate looks larger than most common commercial systems. It definitely doesn't look like a MakerBot. Maybe Stratasys?

  6. You know those community gardens they have in some cities where you get a plot and you can grow your veggies and they supply the land and the water?

I want to do the same thing but with corals and fish. Have a huge warehouse full of frag tanks and lighting where people can come in and grow out their corals / breed fish and get together/trade/donate/further the hobby etc.

Guess I better buy a powerball ticket :)

That would be so amazing. It would probably be so much cheaper if we each had our own "plot". Although, I could see pests being a huge problem.

Have the money to afford the good stuff...

I guess with money...most of these wishes could come true.

Yep, I need that one too!  Heck, automated triton continuous test while we are at it!

If we had the wish of perfect water quality, Triton would hate us. :P We could collect all the water from the wishers tank and just pass it around. Perfect water for everyone :)

  7. I can't remember how I came across this one:

    https://www.jcu.edu.au/news/releases/2016/may/federal-election-last-chance-for-the-reef-jcu-scientists

It required some digging to find it, but it is a pretty decent read.

I think there has been some eyes opening to the idea that these ecosystems need to be saved, but the problem is a lot of the issue comes from global problems. An example would be overproduction of CO2. Well, CO2 couldn't cause problems because it is in the atmosphere, right? Wrong. Ocean acidifcation is caused from excess CO2 and this annihilates coral skeletons (think about a calcium reactor).

Until we can come together and solve these world problems, I think we will just have to continue to understand that these things are going away. Rapidly.

  8. Secretly, this skimmer is the father of the other skimmer. This is the scene where Luke...err...the baby skimmer throws it's father down the reactor shaft.

That reef hackers club is an amazing group. Good job on the build.

  10. Ok. So here is the averaged tabulated data for three weeks of experiment. I will let you judge the data for yourself, but I would make sure to look at trends, rather than single data values. Also remember, there is a 10% to 15% deviation of test kits, which I think caused the variation.

It may have been better to make these graphical, but the scale of numbers is too drastic for either logarithm or axis breaks.

Here is the raw data for weeks #1,2 and 3. There was immense deviation in Magnesium tests, but most were consistent. Sometimes if I came across an outlier, I re-ran the test and commonly came to the same result. So, I began to accept what the test kit was saying. Salinity did rise slightly for the warm bucket by week #3, even with sealing them. pH stayed roughly the same.

After weeks of testing, I finally found how long I am comfortable with leaving my saltwater. I hope others that use Reef Crystals will utilize this data and find their comfort zone.

  11. I will say the refresh feature has come in handy when I was typing something in the "quick-post" and someone else posted on the same thread. Other than that, it is an annoyance.

What is the original reason for having the webpage auto-refresh? It would make sense for to not/limit auto-refresh if the banner never changes.
