  1. Huh. I didn't notice that those were taken with white light. It would just provide a different perspective.

One thing I love is fluorescence and your tank has tons of it. My research group at college studies fluorescent proteins and how they "work." After looking at this thread yesterday, I decided to do a search on fluorescent proteins isolated from corals and anemones. In reality, there are a handful that have been characterized and isolated. Every time I see coral fluoresce, I know there are new proteins to be discovered and your tank is full of them. Haha. Every color you see is likely a different protein.

P.s. I showed my advisor your videos and he couldn't believe that people have aquariums like yours.

  2. I agree. Your tank is superior to many I have encountered. I would frame that last picture you posted in my living room. :P

Funny question...what does the tank look like with the white LED's on. I saw the reflection of the light in the overhead shot and it made me wonder. Do a lot of the corals look like the color they fluoresce?

  3. Commonly, the PAR readings on lighting websites are measured in air and only air. It might be the combination of both the distance from the water, the intensity and location of the light.

You should see if you get the same PAR readings with the light in only air.

Glad to heart the corals are doing well.

  4. I was looking around for acclimation videos and found this interview with Reef2Reef and Steve Tyree:

There isn't a whole lot going on in the video (because it's an interview), but there is a lot of good information being said. I just threw it on in the background and listened to it. Definitely have a better understanding of the pests you might find and dipping corals.

  5. Usually when I see something like that, it is either light bleaching or something bad in my tank happened. Keep in mind, mine are much smaller. :P

I just had a feeling it may have been something else. Intensive transport would make sense, or the shock to new lighting.

How long did you have that piece before you threw it under LED's?

  6. Lighting is only one of many variables to color up sps.

Just don't be discourage when you received color down acro, it will bounce back.

Some will take more time to color up.

I'm curious. What do you think was the original cause of lack of color?

    It looks beautiful.

  7. I can see it now. The moment when someone stops you from cleaning the beach:

**You reach down to pick up an old water bottle on the beach**

Someone yells, "Hey! Put that down."

    You reply, "What?! Why?"

They say, "Because that's its natural habitat. Did you know these are going extinct?"

You say, "What? The water bottle?"

"Yeah, those things are hardly even made anymore. Do you really think you'll see these opportunistic creatures in the future?"

    You say, "Well, yes. Duh."

  8. Totally. PM sent.

They want people to register for numbers and to agree to their safety waiver form. Just click the link above for Gleneden beach and click the "Register" button on the right.

If you don't, I imagine bags will still be there. No one will stop you from cleaning the beach. :P

  9. I went and registered on the SOLVE Oregon webpage for site "Gleneden Beach Wayside Cleanup." SOLVE says that they will be dropping bags off at the site and all I have to do is show up (and maybe bring a change of clothes). I hope you all try to make it out, and if not, try a location closer to your home.

Let me know if you are going. I would love to see you there.

  10. It is a humongous upgrade. Three years of really hot summers in the making.

I got the AI Hydra 52's. It isn't about the ramp up and ramp down, but the intensity of the LED's. 20% on the Hydra's is equivalent to the T12's I was running. 40% is equivalent to the metal halide (and T12's), but that never ran all day. With my work/school schedule, I am always gone when the lights change cycles. If I put it on a timer, then they would run at 100% intensity whenever they came. That's the dilemma.

For now, I am just going to change the time I turn them on and off. That way I am always here when it happens.
