  1. What do you all do for water changes? I am pretty lazy when it comes to doing them and i'm like 90% sure that's why my corals just exist in my tank rather then grow. What sort of schedule are you on? My tank is 28 gallons total volume. When I do change the water I do 10 gallons ish. Would 10 gallons every two weeks be good or maybe 5 every week, although the more infrequently I can get away with the better. I don't change water in my two fresh water tanks and it works for them but my reef needs better then changing the water just when I feel like it. Sort of a noobie question for having this tank for over a year now but nothing really grows it just chills at the same size/number.

I probably over do it. I do a 5 gallon water change twice a week for a 75 gallon display. Roughly 6% with each bucket, but that's on the lower end with the sump. It's a Wednesday, Friday schedule.

When I had a 29 gallon, I used to do 5 gallons once a week. I think you could probably get away with less, but it depends what you want to keep. Less SPS = Less Water changes

  2. Here is how:

    1. Go to photobucket.com or tinypic.com. I usually use tinypic, but it doesn't matter. Any image hosting website will work.
    2. Upload your photo and you should see a section like this:34rf30k.png
    3. You want to take that section with the [ IMG ] brackets and paste it into the forum like this:

Hope that helps. I usually try preview before posting, just in case it didn't work.

  3. There are some awesome looking aiptasia/majanos. I can totally see why at first glance they could be attractive.

    I got another one:

I remember when I had my metal halide over my tank, which was 2x400W 10K + 2xT12 Actinic. I asked my LFS if this was too much for a 75 gallon? I think we all will agree...it is too much. I ran one halide for years, rotating which one came on during the day. I probably wouldn't have gotten the light, if it didn't come with the 75 gallon package.

  4. I thought this part was pretty cool (FP = Fluorescent protein):

"This conservation along divergent parts of the tree of life demonstrates that FPs play one or more roles that are essential to the host organisms, though this purpose remains unclear. Likewise, it remains unclear whether fluorescence emission is important to the host organism or whether it is more of an accidental byproduct. Evolution may well have repurposed FPs for different tasks in different organisms, though the present lack of FP-like proteins in freshwater or terrestrial organisms suggests that these are related to the marine environment. Some of the proposed functionality focuses on the protein’s fluorescence property, including communication (with peers, to attract prey, or to dazzle predators),5 or conversion of part of the sunlight spectrum to wavelengths more suitable for photosynthesis.  14   Others focus more on the protein’s ability to absorb light, as a way to achieve coloration,15 as photoprotection from intensive sunlight,12,16 as photoreceptors,12 or even as photochemical agents in the host metabolism. 17,18  Finally, apparently light-independent functions, such as antioxidant properties, have also been proposed.19,20"

  5. Hey everyone,

I was reading some documents today and I came across this gem.

Fluorescent Proteins - Shine on, you crazy diamond.pdf

It is an article about fluorescent proteins and their use in science. If anything, just scroll through and look at the structures of fluorescent proteins and the different ways you can induce fluorescence. The fluorescence imaging section is over my head, but the first few pages are really, really good.

This is the proper thing to do:

  6. Tens of thousands of scientists deny it.  How do we judge experts??  If doctors claimed cancer had been defeated, how can a average joe know if its true?  He isn't a doctor!  But if people keep dying of cancer, maybe something is wrong.  How many missed predictions of catastrophe do we have to see fail before we recognize something is wrong with climate Science(Religion).  New York was supposed to be under water by now.  The poles were to be devoid of ice by now.  Instead the Antarctic is at record levels.  How about the 500 million climate change refugees??  Oh, and no more ski resorts or winter snow.  When the pile is that deep, you better hold your nose.

Remember Climate change is more dangerous then terrorism.

I really like your point about "How do we judge experts??  If doctors claimed cancer had been defeated, how can a average joe know if its true?" I think this is a very valid thing to say. Extrapolation is difficult, look at your local weather channel.

In general, there are a lot of scientist that don't believe Climate Change (Global Warming) is happening. I think with many things (even with this hobby) there is a consensus and agreement about what the facts (or experiences) are showing, and when a model is correct, predictions can be made. There are countless predictions or extrapolations that happen in science that are wrong and are usually because we because we just don't have enough data points to come to a solid conclusion. I think that is what happened with some of the global warming models. I know from experience that data can be convoluted, where variables overlap and influence each other, making a model unjust.

I will say that if someone is an expert in something and they are trying to explain a concept to me. I hope they would be able to lay out the facts clear enough for anyone to understand. Sometimes we don't get it, sometimes we do, but in the end...it's just a model. The facts LexInverts seem to suggest a strong relationship between the increase of CO2 and the rise in temperature. I don't know if CO2 is the only thing playing the role here, but we have a lot of data points.

I wrote this after personally getting my model rejected by my advisor. :comp:

  7. Mine:

I was removing coralline algae from the corners of my tank with a scraper and noticed I was removing the silicone. I went on ReefCentral and said, "How do you remove coralline algae from the corners with a scraper, without removing the silicone? The tank will fall apart if I keep removing the silicone. "

I was young and didn't realize that I should use a toothbrush or something softer.

  8. I hope this can be as informative as it is funny.

Looking back, what was a beginner question that you asked, that you would now find funny? Maybe it was because you were new to reefing or just didn't understand the concept. What was it?

  9. There is all sorts of stuff that could cause this. A picture might help, but it would be sad to post. Although, it would help if you list the parameters in the tank.

It is so hard to target this stuff. Have you seen the other fish picking on the clown?

  10. Everything I painted that stays underwater in the display eventually lost its paint.  This is mustly PVC plugs for closing off the closed loop.

I am pretty sure it as due to urchins, they can really scrape and clean stuff.  Otherwise I have had great luck with Krylon also.

How long did it last you? I have never painted anything inside the tank. It has always been the back panel, which never directly touches water.

  11. I think Animal House is a reasonable place to start. Dale knows a lot and he has all the cleanup crews you need. Snails for the sand, snails for the rocks, hermits, sand stars and crabs are the most common.

I think if you are looking for bulk, you should head up north to the many fish stores in Salem and Portland area. A lot of them have bulk deals.
