  1. Thanks JManrow for the info. I just re-realize there is a spot on the forum for tank builds. I will start a tank build thread in the right area. On a side note, I finished cleaning my tank out and have all the lights I need for it. I think i will go the mostly dry rock route again. I will seed the dry rock in my other tank.
  2. I have a gavity fed float value. The water container is clear so if it is empty, i can see it. I bought the 1/4in tubing, small ball value, and a small sheet of acrlylic from home depot. The float valve i bought at ocean in the box. I used the acrlylic sheet to make the holder for the float value. It is not perfect but no ATO is perfect. It works alright, i had a few small issues that happen. I just need to fine tune it a little more. My ATO is only a few months old.
  3. That sounds good. See you at 1:30.
  4. I will take them off your hands. I can meet you in portland when you get there. Just give me a location.
  5. If you do not have a buyer yet, could you answers a few questions. Do you know if the led will grow macroalgea, plants, and soft coral over a 20in tall tank? Can the fixture be open up to replace led easy? Are they auto dimming or have a timer in them?
  6. Thanks everyone for the information. I have seen all of those articles, videos, and a few of the pictures. I did re-read the articles a little more carefully. Now I am off to clean out the tank.
  7. So, I have decided that it is time to revamp my 55 gal freshwater tank. I want to convert it to a saltwater lagoon. The plan is to have a variety of macroalgae and a few soft corals. It will have a 30 gal tall sump without skimmer. Yes, a skimmerless tank. I Know lagoons have low flow but how low is low? Since the tank is not empty yet, I will figure it out later. I think the sand bed will be deep because lagoons do not have a lot of rock. I will put as much live rock into the sump as i can. There will be three to four silver utility lights hanging over the tank. I may spray paint them black depending how they look over the tank. They will have LED bulbs in them. I know Lagoons have a lot of feather dusts, marcoalgae, and soft coral. I am having a hard time finding information on what fish tend to live in lagoons, other than juvenile fish. So, I would love to get suggestions on fish. Seahorse will go well in a tank like this but no seahorses. This tank may become a dragonface pipefish breeding tank, so I would need pipefish safe fish and invertebrates. I am not heart set on breeding the dragonface pipefish due to difficulties of rearing the fry. If I do have pipefish fry, they will be moved to the sump. I can have fish that will eat the fry. On to the sump. More than likely, I will not drill the tank to the refugium. The sump will have three chambers. I already have installed the baffles in the sump. I will put live rock in the first chamber and possible the cancer of tanks, pulsing Xenia for added filtering. There is not much room under the stand with the sump, so lighting is the determining factor for Xenia. The second chamber will house macroalgea to help balance the PH. The third is the return +/- live rock. I hope to start cycling the tank by summer or late spring. I still have to remove the last 5 fish, clean the tank, buy LED lamps, return pump, and water fans. If I am not too lazy, I will remove the fish and clean the tank this weekend. I think I will control this tank with an apex. If anyone have any good photos of lagoons, please do post them or pm me. I am having a hard time finding good underwater lagoon shots for inspiration. There is not much in underwater photos of lagoons. Feel free to give stocking ideas as well. This will be my lagoon build thread.
  8. It really was hard to pick. I vote for #10.
  9. I started with almost all dry rock and sand. I seeded my tank with one piece of live rock in sump and I also added copepods. There may have been a few small things on the macroalgea.
  10. More like watching a weird underwater caterpillar. One day(several months later) it will become beautiful butterfly or a plain moth.
  11. When I got to world of wet pets there was only one. I ask them to put me on a list so i can get the next dragonface that comes in. The little pipefish seems to be doing well. Active and appears to be eating.
  12. I can leave right now. I live in beaverton so it might take me 30 to 45 minutes to get to sw portland. Just pm me your address or i can meet you.
  13. Could I get a frag later today, if you have any left?
  14. I was lazy and did not drive to TPA for dragonface pipefish. I did get a dragonface pipefish from world of wet pets. I think i will have a lfs order my another pipefish.
  15. What else is there to do in salem. I cannot just go for one reason. I think i might go to salem if i had more things to do there.
  16. Just wondering if anybody seen a pair of dragonface pipefish for sale locally, meaning Beaverton-Portland area. If not, I will ask a lfs to order a pair for me. I really do not want to order anything living from online.
  17. You can always keep the hospital/ qt running or do as jmanrow said with the sponge. I keep my qt/hospital tank empty but i keep a sponge in my sump at all times. I also use some of my main tank water To fill the qt/hospital tank. I have never used carbon pads, so i do not know if you have to change it more often. Use the carbon after you finish treating the fish. Run the carbon for a few days and do a water change. Keep the fish in that tank for a week or more After treatment. THis is how i would handle it. I have been lucky and have not needed to treat a fish. I have quarantine fish before.
  18. A hospital tank and qt tank is almost the same tank. The qt tank is for when you first recieve the new addition. Some people start treating the fish and others treat as need. The hospital tank is for the fish that gets sick that is in your display tank already. The hospital tank is to treat that one sick fish without harming the invertabrates. You can use the hospital tank as your qt. You just cannot have new fish share the same tank with knew diseased fish (fish from display tank tank). Clean tank as needed and run carbon to remove meds.
  19. One day I will be able to swap frags. I am getting closer to being able to care for corals. How much are the raffle tickets?
  20. Have you tried looking at goodwill. They have all kinds of containers and other things you can use.
  21. When I went to look at my tank, I remember a few facts about Macroalgae. These are "not to worry" facts. Light intensity can have some interesting effects on red Marcoalgae. If the algae gets more intensity light than it needs, it starts to change color. I found that it is not dying but adopting to the light. The red macroalgae products less pigmented cells and more green photosynthesis cell. So, the red macroalgae starts looking more pale yellow to pale green. This happened to my blue ochtode. It color back up when I moved it away from the light. Halimeda becomes pale when the lights go out and colors back up when the lights turn on. If it is pale with tiny green dot, it is a warning sign. The Halimeda just went asexual and is about to release spores.
  22. I am planning on doing the same thing. I want to breed the dragonface pipefish, so most of my research is about the dragonface pipefish. I had to compile a lot of information from forums but you have to really search through them. Here are a few sites I have visited. You probably have already seen these sites. The first two sites are about macroalgae and they are really helpful. You may want to think about culturing copepod just in case. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-01/sl/index.php http://marineplantbook.com/ http://fusedjaw.com/aquariumcare/pipefish-reef-aquarium-part-two-husbandry/ http://fusedjaw.com/aquariumcare/pipefish-reef-aquarium/ http://www.reef2reef.com/forums/fish-discussion/57465-dragonface-pipefish-experiences.html
  23. This is the same tank I found on craigslist. I so wanted that apex but so many people have asked for it already before me. I am sad now.
  24. when i first saw the picture on msn, it was blue and blackish lace. Half hour goes pass and the dress was white. it keeps changing colors on me. I hear that the dress is really blue.
