1. Wow Peppie those dovetails are the real deal!!! I actually think I am going to redo the top - the balance is a little off - like it has a narrow haircut. And no problem Kori, it was really nice to me you and your lady. I hope the reflectors are indeed what you wanted. They really focus the light. I will post more pics soon...it has been a long week...
2. Hey thanks Derbird - that is a good idea! Man I knew I joined this forum for a reason. It is getting away from the planned path right out the gate at the top - I bet if I stuffed some moss in there it would direct it down... I owe you one dude. I have been staring at this thing way too long...
3. 5 hours later - I got it all wired up, doors on, emptied, cleaned and just about ready to go into the house, thought I would share a pic of progress for today - not that it is marine aquarium related at all... Still need to polish out some scratches and get some substrate in there, and dial in the overflow...and eventually make a panel to cover the sump area...trying to get it out of the way not only so Gary has a new crib, but so I can actually get a reef going... 4. Great looking equipment going into this so far. I have also wondered how people get to the middle-bottom on tanks this size...it is going to look pretty freakin' sweet though...
5. Back in town and eager to get this out of the way so I can start building a stand for that 83g. I filled it up for the final water test and that has gone well...no leaks, however the waterfall is now more of a messy spittin' water mess...tested it and all was well before the final coats of silicone...now it runs all over the place - it looks cool like that but too much splatter and I don't know where it might soak through into the foam. So as a precautionary measure I cut off flow to the top. I don't know what I'm going to do about it. Got water running through plumbing from the base and that is doing great. Give it a good rinse, drain, clean it out and refill, warm it up and in old Gary goes...
6. Yeah rainy project day! Best of skill-based luck on your glass joins. Sounds like a cool little tank you have planned.
7. Dog is sold, only this chalice coral remains... Great shape and color markings. I've gotten used to seeing to many frag pictures...
8. Stylaster is right - the treatment I have prescribed is going after getting the stuff local to the animal in question. I sort of presume that all the parameter issues are being addressed. Lots of good info on dipping (iodine, peroxide, others) out on the internet though. And tons of expert advice here on water and lighting conditions obviously. Lots of local reefers really know their stuff, as I have discovered from reading their posts. Best of luck.
9. try a coral dip maybe even a hydrogen-peroxide dip 1 part peroxide to 10 parts tank water and add a little peroxide until the mouth of the coral begin to "sizzle" slightly - leave it in there for a couple of minutes then swirl the coral head in clean tank water for 5 or ten minutes, then back in the tank in a lower light area - observe for the course of a few days...It has really worked out well for me in the past.
10. That's a pretty nice setup for a classroom. Where was all this kind of volunteer stuff when I was in school???
11. Yeehaw! I'm flyin' home early. My dad getting better special - $150 for ballasts, lamp cords and bulbs!!!!! Somebody buy 'em I need dough after being off work for a week! (Still open to future frag trade though)
12. You could always route a notch in any other material and waterproof it - plywood for example. I don't have any experience with starboard. If it is rigid and can be siliconed...already waterproof. Assuming of course you are planning on having a top or supports beneath the tank built into the stand to prevent bowing and such...
13. Right on dude! The 12v case fans are way better than the AC ones. The controllers are usually lighted with LEDs, but you can disable that crap, unless you like the whole Darth Vader life-support-chest-panel look...hmmm...after that descriptor I might have to look into that... I think I am going to do a floating canopy - just enough structure to hide wires and flip up on hinges. May or may not add fans to this as I am going LED and should stay cool enough. Can only tell in testing..but I will definitely vent the bottom enclosure.
14. And I have been bored looking through all the stuff over there while my dad sleeps...
15. Okay maybe 90 - I saw for only a second and posted it up...(scratch)
16. It looked like a 200 gallon acrylic tank (tall-narrow) on a stand with canopy and MH for free...
17. http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/zip/3364981785.html Not mine. Just passing on.
18. too bad none of those golfers had a 1000 gallon FOWLR tank handy...would have been a sweet addition...
19. Thanks PowderBlue, this is his second in 6 months, but way more mild than the first...he was in ICU for only 1 day and is now on the mend... Appreciate it.
20. I don't have a tig - all I have is some aluminum wire for the mig - I won't even try to use that machine on stainless. I don't think I am going to go with a metal stand...been working on a drawing for a customized wood stand and I don't really want to fur out from metal at this time - of course that might change in the design process and subsequent overall size to accommodate the final equipment load-out...
21. Since there have been no takers on the individual setups, or indeed the whole lot, I have decided to part it all out. Reflectors - Sold Ballasts - $70 each - if you want the lamp cords they are $80 each Used Bulbs - $15 apiece or $50 for all four Willing to let go for future frag/colony trade only if you have been a long-time member of the forums and/or PNWMAS. No softies other than high-end zoas or a load of colorful florida ricordia. My dad had a stroke and I am in Montana until Saturday 10.27.12. Willing to PayPal and ship if necessary.
22. LED fixtures should drop dramatically in price due to the rate the chips themselves are being produced. I have always thought that the commercially available fixtures were way overpriced and presented a lack of vision in production of light that was not only beneficial, but pleasing to the eye. Retailers selling DIY parts aren't exactly passing on the best deals either. And the fact that certain LEDs are touted as being more powerful and efficient only to be dialed back by as much as 60% only lends to the mind set that the less powerful (and less expensive) chips might work just as well. I really enjoyed reading the recent write-up about 1w chips, the color blending and efficiency. Great information there. I had LED supplemental lighting for my halide setup on my last tank. I bought the diodes from China (Bridgelux) and the power modules (meanwell) here. Added 32 3w LEDs to a Dual 250w setup and got great growth and color, plus they helped to fill in areas shaded by the "2 sun" effect. These arduino controlled 7-color all-in-one units by reefbreeders are by far cheaper than I could build one myself, especially with full size heatsink internal to the device. 2year warranty! And if you send the guy (Logan) an email he gets back to you the same day. I had a lot of questions for him and they were all answered intelligently within hours. Now the best part - they will still cover your warranty service if you decide to change lenses yourself! I have a box of 60 degree lenses around here somewhere... Anyway - they are supposed to ship today...
23. YOu could stick a gate valve in the middle of that pipe that raises and lowers for fine tuning.
24. Oh yeah dude not a problem. I really hope it works out.
