  1. After seeing Jessie's RapidLeds, I pulled the trigger on getting LED's too! Since it's my birthday this month my fiance let me pick some up (clap) These new lights are from "Reefbreeders" These have a great mix of LED colors giving a full spectrum color (and tons of coral pop). They have 90 degree optics on them and the light penetration is NUTS! They are uber bright, i'm gonna have to borrow the par meter sometime and test them. They are way brighter than the 150w radium I had over the tank before. The fixture is 96w (2w led's) with two dimmers the front. I haven't really been turning them up very high but they are still insane bright! Keep in mind its REALLY hard to photograph these lights properly, even with my T2i (scary) This is about 30-40% white/color channel and 70% blue Toadstools have been on and off pissed about the light lol! They'll adapt! I tried to get all blue, but the picture didn't do it very well, this is just royal blues. Color is crazy and all the oranges/greens in the tank pop out like black light! Here's the fixture and you can see the two dimmer knobs on the front Here's the 4 clusters, the colors are: 12 7500k cool whites 4 420nm violets 2 480nm blues 2 520nm greens 2 660nm reds 2 630nm red/orange on one dimmer and 24 455 royal blues on the other dimmer We'll see how they do for growth, but for looks (drooler) Definately want to get 2 more and do my 90 with them! You can check them out from reefbreeders.com, but they are a little cheaper from their ebay store FYI.
  2. Personally I wouldn't buy a kessil because you can easily DIY one for about $100. They are just a basic LED chip, which you can buy a 100w LED hybrid blue/white chip for about $70 on ebay, a dimmable driver for about $30, then all you need is a little heat sink. I know some of them you can use two drivers and control the whites and blues seperatley. If your not into DIY I suppose Kessil is your only choice, but most of the reviews on the A150 were saying the PAR readings were pretty horrible. With a rapidled or diy kit you can add different colors too, which really makes things pop more than just blue and white can. Also there was an article floating around saying that most LED fixtures are lacking red, which they found to be an important element in growth/color or something. Not exactly sure on the details but I picked a fixture with Red in it for that reason. Thats my 2 cents :P
  3. The overall length of the fixture is 18", so it could set on top and be the same length, but the legs wouldn't be if any use. I never used the legs myself, they just slide out. I suppose it depends on how you want to mount it, you could hang it or come up with some custom legs of some sort. The actinic is nice if you like more blue, I never liked how white all the 150w bulbs were personally and the t5's helped a lot.
  4. Bump, anyone need a fixture for their nano? Works great on cubes too!
  5. Well that one went fast :( I pulled it out today, slime kept over taking everything. I noticed a tiny bit on the red one so it's in iodine now, but isn't as bad, hopefully it pulls through. Guess I'm gonna have to be more careful buying acans :-/
  6. Just did a little reading and duncans don't sting like other lps. I think it just may not have been the best acan, my others have always done great. I'll update as things happen Someone mentioned using vitamin C, any dose this or anything with it in it?
  7. I guess we'll see what happens, I did what the brown jelly disease cures said already, so hopefully that keeps at least one polyp alive to regrow. Kinda strange since I did a luigols dip prior to addidtion to the tank, but they also said to blow lps off with stronger current too, guess I'll start that too in the future.
  8. Hey guys, wondering if anyone has had this issue. I bought 2 acans, 1 looks great and is all puffed up and nice. The other looked ok the first night, then proceeded to start getting a brownish slime forming around the edges. I thought this may be from being cut there or something but wasn't sure. I left it for a day and it got worse. This morning I pulled it out and gave it a luigols bath for 10 mins and blew the slime off, which exposed dead skeleton underneath. This pic is what's left of the colony. Anyone have this issue with new/freshly cut Acans? It's just a bit strange since the other colony is just fine behind it. Just sucks since its the cool colored colony
  9. Keep your eye open, online deals seem to be the best if you catch them at the right time. I have 2 open brains (red and teal/yellow and pink) and one scolly (purple/pink/teal) and I bought all 3 for $150.
  10. It's similar to a maxi jet with the airline plug by the inlet. Not sure if that's venturi.
  11. I was just wondering if you were looking for some corals (I have some hearty ones for new tanks!). I have a used accela pump from a CPR bac pak, not sure if that is the right size or not.
  12. Sweet looking fish! Don't see too many people with them since they aren't invert safe.
  13. Hey Jessie, I have some shrooms, a nice rock covered with purple/blues and a frag of green metallic striped and some lose reds i'll trade ya. Don't remember your address, but I should have time this afternoon/evening. Let me know.
  14. What carbon are you using? If you are putting it in a bag yourself, try using the pellet type carbons, they tend to not be as dust crazy as the ground up crap. A good rinse is always in order before adding though
  15. A bigger pic would be good. Sounds like some nice rics but I can't see them
  16. I've got space for a tang or two if you get them from him.
  17. Hey all, So my sump on my 90 gallon has a built in skimmer. Pretty basic, just an acrylic tube about 5-6" diameter with the pump tapped into the side (open bottom). It has 1/2" threads on it. Currently it has an Eco 633 on it. Overall, not a great skimmer pump in my opinion. It seems to create foam, but doesn't really travel up into the collection chamber enough. I'm not exactly sure where the 90 degree elbo that the pump blows into the chamber should be pointing. I curently have it aimed slightly upward (?), it creates a swirl motion. The skimmer cup doesn't really produce a ton of skimmate, I only empty it (not full) about once every 1-2 weeks. My little CPR bakpak on my 30 gallon fills it's cup practically brimmed every week (scratch). What should I do? Is this an adjustment of the first chambers water level, the skimmer elbo direction, or is it time for a better pump (scary) (needle wheel or something?). Thanks!
  18. Nice looking tank and good start! Keep an eye on the emerald crab...mine always end up being up to no good and get banished to the sump lol! Not sure but the coral your wondering about looks like a chili pepper monti kinda...
  19. Dang, I regret missing the meeting especially since you are in Vancouver! Anyone have pictures of the full setup? All i've seen is the clown herd balls lol! EDIT: nevermind, found some pics here: http://www.pnwmas.org/forums/showthread.php?14940-Clownhouse-photos-from-PNWMAS-meeting cool setup!!!
  20. Just emailed you on CL, sending you a PM on the salt now.
  21. Are they 18k white or a mix of blues and whites? How many of each color?
  22. Have any pics of the 18k LED's over a tank? Would like to get an idea of the color they put out (color temps seem very subjective person to person).
