  1. WOW!! INSANE!! I love how mature the colonies look, nice and BIG! Very beautiful tank, thanks for sharing the pics!
  2. Just to update and clarify.... ReefSafari has given thier two spots in the NoobtoSalt growout competition to wegotjs and Smann Thanks!
  3. Welcome!! Great to see another 40g Breeder keeper, We need to start a club for 40g breeder enthusiests...Can't wait to see pics!!
  4. Another one I really like, not really that "Romantic" but darn good food, is Podnah's Pit BBQ, its also southern style cooking, really-REALLY good BBQ, the pulled pork and Brisket is INSANE!!, its a tiney little restuarant though... http://www.podnahspit.com/?p=photos
  5. I am not from portland, but one of the places I really like is a Lebanese Restuarant called "Nicholas Resturant"...Its easy to find...and if you like middle eastern/lebanese food, its a awesome place. They bring you out this huge giant pizza size bread that they make in thier special oven they imported from over there, and you dip it in humus...Mmmmm...so good. The Turkish Coffee is to die for too...if you like super strong coffee....All that is missing is a hookah...lol http://nicholasrestaurant.com/ By the way, the one on SE Grand is the one with the middle eastern oven that they cook the bread in, thats the one we go to all the time when in portland...
  6. Here are some crappy pics of the ones I have now... Green Polyp Bird of Paradise Green Tipped Yellow Purple Polyp Orange with Green/Blue Polyps And last but not least, my pride and joy...The Pink (This one was my first Birdsnest EVER!)
  7. Sure No problem....it might take some time, as its not a very big colony, but as soon as I can get some frags for sure I will hook you up. It was honestly an impulse buy, I was bored and was just checking out pics of Birdsnests trying to find different kinds available...and stumbled across it. Normally I don't buy online, and have gotten all my SPS (birdsnests) from fellow hobbiests, like you! (You should see the frag I got from you, its doing great, I can hook you up with a frag of that soon too..lol) Anyway....It was $49.99 plus shipping $34.99= $84.98 for the 3" colony....I think thats the most I have ever spent on a coral...BUT...I have never seen a Birdsnest like it, so I think it was worth it....Pink with Green Tips!!! YEAH!!
  8. It was in the section just labeled "SPS" thats why I was thinking its wild...I have never purchased a wild coral before, so this is all new to me, what types of things should I be looking for? pest wise? They claim that they medicate and treat all corals that come in, and then they quarantine them for a min of 2 weeks prior to offering them up for sale....
  9. Cool...Sounds good...I hope it does well...I will post pics of it when it comes in....Friday Night.
  10. I was thinking about this the other day, Generally many people accept the "naming" of corals, catchy names that have ring to them, and often times many hobbiests only know the common "brand" name of the corals they keep. I was wondering how they get these names, obviously places like ORA, ect. are large enough that they can propagate corals and give them names and most people accept that and run with it. Its almost a social acceptance thing than anything, obviously its ment as a marketing tool, but its interesting to me to see someone give a name to a certain uncommon coral, and how it gathers a following if you know what I mean, the "name" wont stick unless people use it and talk about it using that name. How does one name something? You see some of the names some corals have and you wonder how they got thier names, recently TECO had a peice of unique coral that we all got to help in choosing the new name for (which was pretty cool).... I know for Zoanthids they have almost like a registry of names and photo ID's, that way if someone has something they think is special they can check to see if someone else has it and if its already been "named"....Then you have the same corals but from different sources that call them different things...that can be confusing too.... I often wonder why some corals get names and some just get called by thier description....I guess for most names to stick, they have to be presented by people of status, well known individuals that have a reputation...If any joe shmoe got a peice of wild coral and slapped a fancy name on it would it be laughed at? Do you think the naming of corals is lame? Cool? Can anyone do it and get away with it? I mean who wouldn't want to see a coral being propagated and sold/traded with a name you gave it being used...coral that you started by fragging and growing out and giving it a name and it spreads across the country...that would be pretty cool...to say in 10 years have someone post pics of a new coral they got named "bla..bla..bla"....and to think you started it all...that would be pretty cool. Anyway...sorry for the rambling...I find the naming of corals interesting...
  11. Glad your sticking around, Over the last year it seems money is tight for many people, and when you own your own business it can be stressful, and start making people edgy. I have learned who and where I should go, and like you said, I have a short list of lfs that get my hard earned money....I express my opinions with my money...and those that don't get my money....well, there is probably a good reason for it. Glad your sticking around as a member though...
  12. WOW!!! Wholey Cow! Thats awesome! Really nice job on the aquascaping, its hard to call that a refugium, I would be tempted to call it "the other display tank"....Pretty Cool! Nice Job!
  13. Very Cool, I will have to check that out on my lunch break, Thanks! Thats really interesting info... Thanks....The Tubbs is alot like the Birds of paradise right? I hope to pickup some Ponape here soon, along with the Sour Apple...I just picked this up today, should be here friday, I am kinda freaked as this is the first time I have ordered Birdsnest online, but it seemed too cool to pass up, I haven't seen anything like it before, have you? Pink with Green tips? They call it a Seriatopora hystrix, but it doesn't have pointy tips, they seem more rounded....you really think its a Seriatopora hystrix? Any advice as this is the first time I have gotten SPS from Live Aquaria, I am guessing this is a wild mini colony? anything special I should do? All the Birdsnest I have came from local hobbiests....it didn't really specify if this was Wild Caught, Maricultured, and I doubt its Aquacultured....so my initial guess was it was wild caught....Anything I should look for? or do? I just hope it makes it to me in one piece, and not all broken from shipping....but I haven't seen anything like it....so I took a chance...
  14. So I am currently on this Birdsnest kick, as that seems to be what I can keep the best, So I am finding myself filling my tank with different kinds of birdsnests, I was wondering there are two main kinds right? Seriatopora Hystrix (The pointy tips) and Seriatopora Guttatus (The more rounded tips)...those two are the main kinds right? Then there is also the Seriatopora caliendrum which seems to come in third...as the most commong...right? Does anyone know of any good info on birdsnests and all the different kinds? It seems often times they get mislabeled as different things or lumped into just "Birdsnest"...I would love to learn as much as I can about them. Feel free to post pics of your Birdsnests....I will snap pics of the ones I currently have and post them tonight.
  15. WOW! Crazy huge difference, Nice Job, Its crazy to think thats actually the same rock.......Looks really good, Is that the same light fixture you have always had? it looks brighter! Congrats on the new tank...now the fun begins!(naughty)
  16. Very cool! Welcome....I am just the opposite of you, as I like Corals with a little dash of fish....but there are lots of members here that are big into fish...Welcome and the tank looks great! very colorful fish...Love Flame Angels!
  17. If someone wants this skimmer, I have no problem picking it up and bringing it to portland area, I make it down a least every other week or so....it would be no big deal for me to pick it up and bring it down with me and meet someone....just offering...if somones interested.
  18. 33 Longs are awesome tanks, they fit perfectly onto most 55 gallon stands which are very easy to find, very unique tanks as not many people seem to work with them, My wife loves her 33 Long....Free Bump(rock2)
  19. I have heard good things about Maristar MH/T5 combo fixtures, but whoooeeee they seem spendy....Someday I might give them a try..
  20. I am a fan of Current USA fixtures, both in T5 and Metal Halides, even PC...every light fixture I have ever owned since getting into the hobby has been Current USA, its too bad they pretty much stop making fixtures...Never had a problem with any of them. Since I have never owned anything else, I have nothing to compair them too, so my opinion should be taken with even less than a grain of salt...LOL
  21. Glad to hear your sticking with it, as to your question that is bubble algae, it seems fairly common, but can quickly spread all over if your not careful....it can quickly become a nuisanse.
  22. SCORE!!! Nice find, congrats on the new addition...you will have to keep us posted if it changes at all, I would like to see what it looks like in a year from now...Pretty cool find!
  23. Cool, Thanks...I have sent a PM...I never really gave the Ponape much thought, as to me it wasn't all that colorful, but its one I don't have so I figured why not get one and give it a try...it seems it colors up nicely for some people, with beautiful puple tips...what the heck, why not....right?
  24. Let me know if you ever accidently break off a peice, I will buy it from you...(naughty)
