  1. Just my experience, sheetrock anchors are good if you never touch them. Every time they get bumped, (moving the light to feed, clean, etc.) they weaken. If it were me, I would support either above the ceiling with some kind of spreader(2x4 or ?), or screw directly into the ceiling joists. Not trying to be pushy,(enforcer) just would hate to see a thread in 6 months about a light falling.(sad) Gabe
  2. Just a word of coution... Is that 35# rated shear (in a wall with the weight pulling down) or tensile (in the ceiling pulling down). The guy I helped had his fixture fall in his tank when it was just supported by the sheetrock. Gabe
  3. They work great when they are clean, but when they get a little gunk they stick in one spot. Easy to clean, but every two months gets old. I used one on a 250gph return for a year, finaly got tired of cleaning it. Just my experience. Gabe
  4. For a really clean look, (and you have access to the space above your ceiling) lay a 2x4 across your joists and attach there. Then make a hole in the sheetrock just big enough to thread the cable through. I helped a buddy do this, and the finnish looked great. Just one option. Gabe
  5. A couple pics from the hospital. You know my addiction(fish), my wife loves the home made knit wool baby cloths. Not much cheaper than reefing though DOH!
  6. Home today, all is well. Healthy boy. (clap) 7lbs 10oz Will post a couple pics soon. Thanks all. Gabe and family (Happy Birthday Markbirkett)
  7. Don't worry, it wasn't the tank!!(laugh) Looks like the new little reefer will be here tomorrow. She was due for Saturday, but we will be having an April fools baby. (no joke) Doc said if she is not in labor by 8 am they will induce. Now I will have more help cleaning the tank(clap)
  8. Sorry, no story here. I try to keep it simple so I don't forget(scratch) Cool thread, kinda wondered about some of the screen names... Gabe
  9. Top Notch every step!!!!(clap) It looks Great.(drooler) What are those fixtures? Ultra slim, with what looks like great light.

    New Copperband

So here is the new fish in the tank. Of course my pirate tang has to strut his stuff, aarg! (laugh) He seems to be happy. Joyfully eating the tiny feather dusters. Sorry for the pics through the filthy tank. Gabe
  11. Woa! 5 10K's! Thats a lot of white. I have a 6 lamp fixture that came with 4 10K, and 2 460 actinics. Totaly washed out the colors. Bought 2 deep blue, removed 2 whites, worked well for a year. Now a I am down to just 1 10K, 2 actinics, 2 deep blue, 1 indigo sun. Favorite combo so far,(clap) good growth of all corals. I am just 18" deep though.

    Disassemble??

A little brainstorming at work today came up with the idea of using string or something to cut through the silicone. Experimented after work with some thread, dental floss, and fishing line. The winner was 6# test Trilene Ultraclear(laugh). Took about 10 min. to remove one end panel. I like the guitar string idea, but no guitars here. Thanks again guys! Gabe

    Disassemble??

OK, new Question... how can you tell, without being destructive, if glass is tempered? There are a couple chips on the corners, could that indicate non-tempered?

    Disassemble??

Has anyone ever taken apart a glass aquarium? I have an old AGA 55 that is 3/8". I want to try building a cube, and this seems like a good place to get some cheap glass.(nutty) The plastic frame came off easy enough, and the silicone in the corners also. Just not sure how to get the silicone out of the seams.(scratch) Thanks Gabe

    New Copperband

Currently he will share the tank with a royal g., lawnmower, anthias, purcula (his mate bailed), and a one eyed yellow tang. I know they will nip at clams, and eat feather dusters, but none in there now. Will see how he does with the rest of the corals.

    New Copperband

So I just picked up the fish I have always wanted(clap) I knew they need an established tank, sometimes picky eaters. I've waited over a year now, and think he will be happy. In the quarantine for 2 days now and seems to be happy:D Eats frozen brine, and misis. If anybody has any experiance, things to watch for, I would love to hear. Thanks in advance Gabe
  19. When your wife is cool with you using the kitchen counter for the quarantine tank...(whistle)
  20. Not sure where your at, but look under waterjet in the yellow pages. There are a couple places in Medford, they will cut just about anything. Good luck.
  21. Verry nice!!! Welcome. Good to see another reefer from south state.

    need help fragging

Thanks, the "cutting" was with clippers. Did some clipping tonight, and bent up a little rack out of some polycarbonate. We'll see how they do.

Thanks guys, I didn't think it mattered, but wanted to ask before I started chopping on stuff.

    need help fragging

I have never cut a sps before, and was wondering if there is a better place to cut than others.(scratch) Should I cut up high so the bare end is in the light, or lower (out of direct light). Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
