  1. Chaeto can be added at anytime. It will have a lot of good stuff to help cycle faster.
  2. I don't like adding (or buying) treatments for my reef. I had bad cyano once. I improved skimming and added another light to my refugium with chaeto and it went away. Before it went away I brushed it off the rock and sand from time to time so that it woudn't get to strong of a hold on things.
  3. Much of what the snails eat will not be poo, they hold on to some of it. Edit-- although I agree that water changes should be done for the mass die off on new rock. This will happen in the first 1-3 weeks and then after that it should not be mass die off and rotting.
  4. Yep, Snails and crabs should be able to handle it. And if you get it under control now with the lights on, you are less likely to have to turn the lights off after you add coral to control an algae problem. Also, there might be some cool macro algae that grows out of the rock when no fish are around to eat it.
  5. I don't think you should turn off your lights. But if you have green algae, get some snails.
  6. The study I read was new and suggested that maxima clams (and maybe others) have eyes but that more studies need to be done to know for sure. I wish I knew where I read that.
  7. My clams will move when I walk next to my tank. so I looked it up and found a study on clam eyes. I was surprised.
  8. It does not matter what type of food. Any food that you would feed marine fish.
  9. Just add some fish food pellets. Feed it like you would feed it if the tank was over stocked. Do this for a few days and test often.
  10. I guess I test for phosphates daily also, by watching for algae.
  11. My point was not clear. I have never seen anything on a phosphate test myself. Every other test I have seen the good and the bad, but not a phosphate test. Even when I was having pest algae problems. Even when phosphates are a problem they can be used up before they are tested for. The best test can say zero and you can still have a phosphate problem. So in my experience, you should know where phosphates come from and know how to remove them, but I, myself, have not found need to test for them.
  12. Sorry, I shouldn't make comments like this becasue every tank is different. I'm sure you do right by your tanks. For my tanks I try to leave the junk in there so algae will grow and my snails will have a little food. My snails look hungry all the time, that is one reason I am trying to sell them, I don't want them to starve.
  13. No one needs a test for phosphates. I have one and it always reads zero, even if there is a phosphate problem. The problem with phosphate tests is that it doesn't test for all phosphates. Just know that you have phosphates with everything you add to your tank and that algae love it. So if you have algae as a nutrient export, you will be fine. If not, get a phosphate "reactor". Just my opinion.
  14. Wow, you act like food is a poison. I know it breaks down into a poison but that is what filtration is for. Bacteria take care of that poison and turn it into plant food.
  15. bump This is an easy system to care for. It would make a great QT or frag tank.
  16. Still wondering what these are worth. I know a good store would sell them for $80. Most stores would sell them for more. I was thinking $70-$75 because I'm not as convenient as a store. Does this seem about right?
  17. But I think a 150 tall is only 30 inches tall.
