  1. Thanks! I'm really excited, The female has always had the "onyx" coloration but the little male didn't really have the onyx pattern, but in the last six months he's now almost all black between his bars just like the female. So I'm really excited to see the offspring these two produce. Clay pots seem to work well for a lot of people as well as using tiles. These two have been in their own 20L since we got them, I knew they were spawning for Jordan when he had them so it's been a long time waiting to see when they would eventually get back to business. My intention when we got these two was to breed them, now I can start marking dates on the calendar and figuring out their cycle and be prepared for the next batches. The hardest part is that they are being kept at the school and not at my house so it's going to make things a little more difficult. Now that they're spawning again I'm too scared to move them to my house in fear that they might stop.
  2. So after much anticipation they've finally started to do it! This is the pair I picked up from Jordan a while back. Friday morning I got a phone call that they were acting weird and moving sand out of one of the pots in their tank, later that afternoon I got the call that momma was in fact laying eggs. I don't think I'll have enough time to get things setup for babies and I have no live food and not enough time to make any up. Dave, if you happen to see this pm me your phone number if your interested in selling some live food... that is if you have any made up. I'd also be interested in picking your brain a little if you've got the time.
  3. Unbelievable... I don't know you Frank but I hope you find an envelope in the mail with your rings back. People make me sick.
  4. I have one now that's about 3" I found it yesterday buried in the back of the big cube, its a split from one of the roses in there. I have no clue how long it's been in the dark for. Either way it will eventually turn rose colored like the rest. The only person I know that's had one stay pink and live is Garret, but like everyone else his eventually turned back to it's rose color as well... In other words if you find one it's really nothing special, just an unhealthy rose anemone...
  5. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/search.shtml?searchQuery=rtv103&op=search&Ntt=rtv103&N=0&sst=subset This is the stuff you want to use, they usually have it in stock at the Tualatin and at Swan Island locations. Make sure you check the biubd date, I got one that was expired a while back. If it's expired you can't use it. Also make sure you get some extra to play around with and get used to using, it's not like normal silicone it's more like a paste. What your doing isn't hard at all, just take your time and be careful getting out the old stuff so that you don't break into the actual structural part of the silicone joints and you'll be fine.
  6. This was my thought almost to a T... It will be interesting to see what comes from this fish and if the genetic markings are strong enough to make it through to the offspring in the first place. Obviously having a pair of lightning clowns would be ideal, but that isn't possible. It'll be interesting to see what comes. I know I'd be into a pair. I've always had a soft spot for the maroon clown and they've always managed to find the soft spots on my hands and arms =) On a side note the pair of true perc's I picked up from Jordan last year are doing well, the male has now almost totally developed the full onyx coloration that the female has. Now if they'd just get down to business again I'd be stoked! I'm almost to the point of dosing that tank with vodka and barry white (laugh)
  7. I'm with everyone else here... I had a RKE and wasn't impressed. I love my Apex! There isn't much more I can say that everyone else already hasn't.
  8. I believe at this point Australian rules will be changing VERY soon. If the this didn't already make you mad then this will upset you even more... THIS IS THE 3rd WRECK FROM THE SAME COMPANY IN 3 YEARS!
  9. Personally I'd like to take turns beating the crap out of the crew of the Sea Shepherd... All they have done is a take a just cause and made it harder for the people that are legitimately trying to stop illegal whaling amongst other things. Unless anarchy takes over the sea in masses violence will never prove your cause to be just. Generally using violence to prove a point is completely futile. They spew tons of false propaganda based solely on their opinions and not based on facts. Not that long ago these were the same people claiming yellow tangs in Hawaii were near extinction and that marine aquarists were nothing more than the pedophiles of the ocean...
  10. I don't know what will... No marine pilot on board and miles off course. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/asia/la-fg-australia-reef5-2010apr05,0,3324015.story?track=rss
  11. The guitar string is actually a really good idea! I've used them to dismantle tanks before as well and didn't think about that. More than likely you'll break the overflow box before you break the glass. Just take your time and have some patience. Oh yeah, stop electrocuting yourself!
  12. Mick, there are a few things you need to change... first off the elbow from the bulkhead inside the overflow box will help x 1000! it'll stop most of the noise at the bulkhead. Also on the elbow on the backside of the bulkhead you need to drill a small hole in the top of the elbow and run a small piece of airline preferably with a valve to tune the overflow. All are very cheap parts and will get that overflow working properly and quiet it down. The biggest issue that's making the noise is that the drain is pulling a siphon essentially then breaking the siphon once it's allowed to pull air in the front of the bulkhead when it's pulled the water down too fast. The 9.5 is too much pump and does need to be throttled back some, but start with the above first and keep an eye on the water level for a good 30 min to make sure it doesn't creep up on you as well! Otherwise you might end up with a wet floor and a REALLY pissed off family!
  13. Mike, I seem to have lost your number, shoot me a pm with it. I gotta make a trip up and come see this beast!
  14. Glad you chimed in Steve! Eventually I'll be picking your brain for coldwater advice once I'm ready to start a coldwater cube. I was picking up another tank from James the other day and he mentioned that you were coming in later that day to talk tanks... Figured you had some bigger plans now that your back. 400 gallons of coldwater should be pretty sweet!
  15. I've haven't had to add or replace any in my system in well over six months... still going strong and they haven't started to desolve or break down. How big is your sump??? A 240 with a decent amount of rock is going to drop to like 200gal Your sump holds 100 gallons of water? Anyways, they've worked quite well for me... Much better experience than I had with vodka.
  16. http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_viewitem.aspx?idproduct=XB1113&child=XB1113&utm_source=mdcsegooglebase2&utm_medium=cse&utm_campaign=mdcsegooglebase2&utm_content=XB1113 Quite a few places online are starting to cary them now. Try doing a search on RC as well, there are a lot of people that helped do the testing on them. I believe the thread is in the sps forum somewhere but it's been a while since I checked it and I think I unsubscribed. Nice thing is that they desolve over time and you just have to add more, they seem to be lasting a long time for me though. Just make sure you don't overfill your reactor because the bacterial will cause the pellets to stop moving and eventually clog. Also make sure you run a pump with some decent power like a mj1200 to keep the pellets moving in the reactor.
  17. Eventually I'll be doing a small coldwater setup, maybe Steve Weast will chime in, I'm sure he know's all the collection information... He's the man when it comes to coldwater setups. I don't see them missing 20# either... but the state might disagree!
  18. Well the first thing that comes to mind is that all the life on that live rock is going to die and become one big phosphate mess... The living organisms that are living on the rock at 50 some odd degrees is going to do nothing but die in a 75-78 degree environment. I could go over a list of other reasons it won't do well but this is the first issue... If you were building a coldwater tank than you'd be stoked to get some nice local rock with coraline on it but that's not the case...
  19. If you have any Cyano I would strongly recommend not dosing vodka! I started running vodka and mb7 on my big cube and ended up with a HUGE Cyano outbreak that came out of nowhere. It was a total mess. The vodka will also help fuel the Cyano since it's also a bacteria. I run the NP Biopellets and have had great success with them! Simple to use, no dosing no bacterial outbreaks in the tank and best of all NO CYANO! Actually the introduction of the pellets is what got rid of the cyano. A lot of people have had really good success with vodka but my personal experience was not so great. I'm now running the pellets in all of my tanks.
  20. Don't judge external pumps by any of the Gen-X pumps, they're a powerful pump but obnoxious as all hell! Look into Reeflo pumps, you won't be disappointed! Even their largest pumps are [language filter] near silent. To be honest I think my Reeflo Snapper is quieter than my Eheim Internal return pump and it's definitely quieter than my skimmer! Like others have said, a mousepad and not hard plumbing the pump will help but not that much. I use my old pcx40 from years ago in my water mixing tank, that's about all it's good for IMO.
  21. Well, all we can do is give your our best advise, what you choose to do is up to you. Conditioned tap water will remove chlorine from your tap and "buff" the water but your still not removing other desolved solids from your water. You need to be running water from an RO. YES people have done it with tap water and had success BUT everyones individual tds readings are going to be different depending on where you live and the waters origin. Conditioned tap water would be suitable if you were running a FOWLR but no way for a reef. What are your waters perams? There really needs to be a sticky around here for people asking advice on problems with their tanks to post the results of a current water test, their water source etc. when asking for help. It just makes it A LOT easier to give good advise. How big if your tank? What are you running for a skimmer? Cyano can be a real pain to get rid of... Do a full water test and post the results along with some info on your system, this will give people a better idea of how to help you address the problem. Cyano will die back without light, you need to stay consistent for five days without light though, if you need to close any blinds that shoot direct sunlight into the tank as well.
  22. Like most have said, cut your feedings back syphon out as much as you can. If you've got it on rocks use a powerhead to blow it off. You can use a fine fish net to remove it from the water column after you blow it off of the rocks. After you've done that turn all of your lights out completely for five days while doing water changes. Having your lights out for five days won't harm your corals. You obviously have a nutrient problem that you need to address, if you don't find the source of the problem the cyano will just return and you'll be spinning your wheels. There are plenty of ways to deal with tank issues without chemicals. Personally I refuse to put chemicals in any of my tanks.
  23. One Day Glass Peninsula Glass Company 6005 NE 121st Ave Vancouver, WA 98682 (800) 468-4323 (360) 892-2029 These guys have a waterjet. How little are you trying to cut off?
  24. There's a buyer up in Seattle that wants the tank but he's out of the country at the moment... He hasn't given me a deposit on the tank or anything so technically it's still for sale. If you want to come by and take a look at it shoot me a pm with your number and we can arrange a time for you to come over and take a look at it.
