  1. I believe those tanks were coming from SeaStar and Aquarium Obsessed, both companies were from Canada and are also now out of business. Closest reputable custom glass builder I know of now a days is Lee Mar down in CA.
  2. Interesting Dave! Last thing I had heard is that it had been done but that it was extremely difficult and you could pretty much count the survival rate on one hand if lucky.
  3. My cleaners spawn all the time... It's too bad that it's been nearly impossible for anyone to raise them. Great coral food though!
  4. CNN is saying most people in Tokyo are fine, mostly cracked windows and walls. No real casualties there though except in an old factory where there was a fire. Most of the fires and flooding are confined to the N - NE coast. They just upped the quake to a 8.9!
  5. In the end you'll be happy you spent the extra money, James builds the best and for something that size you want the best. I appreciate the insurance that I could hit any of my tanks with a sledge hammer and the worst I have to think about is how I'd buff out the scratches. And if you want an awesome stand Scott is your man! His stands are top notch!
  6. Should of refreshed before I posted... Got stuck on CNN
  7. They're saying the tsunami will potentially hit Hawaii just after 3:00am There are warnings for Indo, the Marshall Islands and most places... This is going to get a lot worse for all of these people.
  8. I'm still a noob when it comes to breeding but with daves help I've managed to have a successful second batch of my true percs that are now about five months old now and a couple of them at starting to start their second stripes. My first batch I lost due to removing the eggs too early, and then having to leave on business and wasn't able to attend to the eggs and the few that did hatch. My best advice is let the first couple clutches of eggs hatch into the tank and get everything in order if your going to do it, as long as nothing major changes in the tank they'll keep laying for you so you've got plenty of time to get prepared and educate yourself as much as possible. I've read in many books that the first couple clutches can be infertile so your better off letting the first couple go. Also this will give you time to know exactly how long it'll take for them to hatch, this way you can mark your calendar and know the exact day you need to pull them from the parents for the evening of hatching. You really want to leave the eggs with the parents as long as you possibly can. Good luck, read as much as you can and take notes. Making sure you have enough food and the time to feed them multiple times per day is a must. It's not rocket science and it's a really fun learning experience. Just make sure you plan ahead and be prepared, you won't have much if any success if you try to rush it.
  9. I wouldn't call them quiet, they aren't screaming loud but you can definitely hear them running, too loud for my taste... no where near the Reeflo pumps. If you want quiet then send it back and get the Snapper. I love my Snappers, my skimmer makes more noise than my snapper. The Reeflo pumps are as close to silent as you can get.
  10. http://www.envisionacrylics.com/contact.html Give him some time to get back to you, he can take a little while depending on how busy he gets. It's just him and his wife that work at the shop. Best thing you can do is draw out your ideas and sit down and talk with him or email him what you have in mind. Even if I lived all the way across the country I'd still have James build my tanks. You'll get a completely custom tank tailored to exactly what you want while knowing you've got the Rolls Royce of fish tanks. And keep your wife away from the magnet cleaner... Mine won't go near the tank cause she knows better!
  11. I can't comment on Rick's build quality, although I believe he's a hobbyist working with glass and not a professional tank builder. For the size your talking about I would only consider a professional tank builder with some tank engineering experience. Like I said I've only seen photos of one of the first tank he's built and have no idea how his skills have progressed. Other than that there really isn't any options around here, Joel who used to own Waves was building glass tanks but I believe he quit building tanks when he closed his shop. You might try the Seattle area, I believe I remember hearing that someone up there was building custom glass tanks. This was a while ago though. Have you considered acrylic? I know a lot of people dislike acrylic tanks because of how easy they scratch, although if your looking at Starfire (low iron glass) it scratches fairly easy compared to normal glass. I personally wouldn't consider building a glass reef tank without Starfire because of how much regular glass kills the optical quality. As far as visual clarity you can't do better than acrylic. Acrylic does scratch easier than Starfire, but acrylic is repairable and can be polished without even draining the tank or removing livestock. If you scratch glass you just have to live with it. Eventually a glass tank will break down, its just the nature of silicone and has the potential form leaks over time. An acrylic tank will last forever if properly built. To me the choice is simple, we're blessed to have one of the worlds top acrylic tank fabricators right here in the NW. I'd give James a call over at Envision Acrylics. James has built multiple tanks for me as well as plenty of other members around here. His prices are very fair and the quality can't be matched. He'll get you setup with a beautiful over built tank that'll last a lifetime.
  12. I'll take it... PM me your number and we can arrange a time to pick it up. Chris
  13. I have one that's beautiful and gets fed like a hog... and it still get's bored and goes after corals. I've always been one to keep large angels in my reef and had very good success. The blue face is staying but the tank is going back to all sps. Sorry for the thread hijack! A pair of regals! I always had great luck with my Regals once I got them eating normal food, and I never really had any coral damage from them. Still one of my all time favorite fish.
  14. Mike you don't want a blue face for your tank... trust me! Well unless you feel like watching all of your soft stuff disappear!
  15. If your client is as upscale as you make them sound then they are going to want the best, Ruben is out of the question since his work is crap. Sorry but I won't sugar cote this one. James is your guy, there's a reason he has so many high end clients... For gods sake there are people in Japan that have Envision tanks! He's built multiple tanks for me and he'll stand behind his work 100% I wouldn't even consider having anyone else build an acrylic tank. It's simple, tell your clients your are working with a world class acrylic fabricator to build their tank. If they want the best they'll understand. As far as cold water goes... Steve is the man.
  16. Leave the tank fallow (fish less) for 6 weeks while continuing weekly water changes. Purchase a quarantine tank, unless your planning on having bigger fish a 10G will work fine. Quarantine tanks are your best friend and in the end they'll save you a lot of money and heartache.
  17. Honestly for what you'll get out of the tank it's probably not worth all the time and effort to "try" and fix it. Weld on "might" work but I wouldn't trust it. Bonding pvc can be a difficult process and if not done correctly by someone with some real bonding experience it will eventually result in failure. Maybe in 5 minutes maybe in 5 years. It's up to you, but I'm a firm believer in karma and I personally wouldn't feel good about selling anyone a tank that was fixed that way. The only ways to properly fix it is to buy the complete replacement top trim that includes a new center brace, I'd say try contacting Top Fin or Aqueon. Or cut out the center brace and install a glass one. I wouldn't use anything smaller than 2" in width and .25" thick glass. Personally I'd put the tank in the classifieds for $20 and let someone else do the repair, then not your fault if the tank fails and 55 gallons of saltwater is on their floor and all their livestock is dead.
  18. I've got one of each 500ml bottles, I'm not dosing this anymore now that I've switched the tanks over to bio pellets and the nutrient levels are stable. I opened both bottles about a month ago and did two doses of 5ml of each. So essentially both bottles are brand new. Both still have the price tags on them from Upscales for $20 each. $20 for both bottles.
  19. The best thing about an Envision tank is it'll last you forever and you won't find a higher quality acrylic tank out there. If you factor in the labor for a tank completely custom made however you'd like it the price is actually extremely cheap. Plus if you want to upgrade at a later time your Envision tank will hold it's value. Hell people form all over the world have tanks built by James because his tanks are just that good. I've bought a few tanks from James, I actually have a 30x30x18 cube with the paper on it sitting in my dining room. One of these day's I'll get the clowns new home setup!
  20. James just built a 30x30x18 for us, to be honest I think the quality of the marineland tanks are lacking the details dept. they just look mass produced "cause they are" Getting a tank from James you'll get the exact tank you want clear down to every specific detail and you get the best quality acrylic tank out there... I've owned a few tanks form Envision and they're top notch!
  21. Those are some interesting figures... where did they come from? I'd be interested to see those backed up with some substance. Not trying to pick a fight, just would like to see a reputable source that can back those numbers up.
  22. Sorry Mick but everything about this screams terrible idea... your going to find yourself flushing that $12 down the toilet.
  23. I've used Pep's before and they do work, they also can go after things like Zoa's and other stuff after the aptasia's all gone. Super glue and couple small pieces of frag epoxy works the best. Aptaisa X also worked really well for me. I'd just avoid putting any animal in there that you don't want to keep. Most things that eat aptasia are hit or miss and then usually turn into a total PITA to remove and will eventually bother corals and other inverts when they run out of food.
  24. Hawaiian Zebra hermits seem to work really good... another solution is to crank up your mag for a few weeks. That should kill most of it without having to add any fish that you'll later want to remove if you building a reef. Raccoon's can be pretty evil little bastards!
