  1. An important thing to keep in mind is where non photosynthetic organisms get their nutrients. Simply put, if an organism in your aquarium isn't getting nutrients from dinoflagellates (the term which is now being used to describe what we all call "zooxanthellae") then they are getting nutrients from the water column. So even if there is a spot without light, it won't be a very hospitable place for NPS life without nutrients and flow. Make sure the cryptic tank has plenty of flow and that you have enough nutrients (what we call waste) to support life in the cryptic zone. Theoretically, if there is enough flow and all of the right factors for your cryptic tank... and there STILL isn't any visible growth (assuming you know it has been seeded with the proper biodiversity) then that is GOOD! Because that means your system doesn't produce enough waste to support your cryptic zone. On a side(and less important) note, the reason that the scientific field is moving to calling "zooxanthellae" "dinoflagellates" is because the term "zooxanthellae" was coined by scientists when they weren't aware what type of organisms were holding symbiotic relationships in sponges and corals... so they applied the blanket term "zooxanthellae." Now that we have correctly identified the true identity of the symbionts... "zooxanthellae" is just an outdated term. That being said, its popular enough that people know what your saying. So forgive my anal retentiveness
  2. It is great that Kenny gave you a smoking deal on those lights! I look foreword to seeing the tank this December! AND YIKES!! how embarassing... looks like Mr. Connolly forgot the proper spelling of "unused" (whistle)
  3. I would expect no less from you Mike! Thats why MVP is the best!
  4. Hydrozoans are cnidarians, just like Anthozoans(corals+anemones). However, hydrozoans have both a medusa and a polyp stage, whereas cnidarians only live as polyps. What makes me think that these critters are anemones, would be the fact that they look morphologically similar to other small species of anemones. As for whether or not they are majanos, don't forget that "majano" is a loosely associated term with pest anemones, and there are endless variants. Fun fact: Portuguese man o' wars are colonial hydrozoans... NOT jellyfish
  5. divers institute is a commercial diving school. If you plan on doing commercial diving, that is not a bad choice. I would sugest talking to Dave Ishmael at Under Water Works in Tigard. However, if you plan to open a recreational dive shop in Hawaii, then you need to go through another organization. Currently, PADI (put another dollar in) is the largest recreational diving organization. To get titles in recreational scuba diving is a peice of cake compared to any real college you could go to. It is an organization and activity geared toward tourists, I honestly don't think you can get failed out. The divemaster program, (the first level of professional diving) takes about six months to a year. If you wish to open a scuba school, you continue up to course director. All of the training is going to be make to go around another job or career, so weekends and evenings. Don't make the mistake of thinking that PADI will teach you much about dive shops, or business. If you work at a dive shop, and get trained by them, then you will likely become involved in their business, and it will be from having a close relationship with a dive shop that will give you experience in the dive industry. Around here, Nicole Pratt at seven seas scuba is the only course director. They're a great shop, and the sort of place that if you train with them to move to the ranks of instructor, you will learn all about how and what to do in a shop... that is if they like you... because there isnt a place in the padi cirriculum that involves practical business in dive shops.
  6. I need this gone! 275 takes it if gone by today!
  7. Bumping this up! New price is 375, no LED unit Included. I have some halide lighting if you need it though
  8. Hey guys, I need to sell this tank! gotta pay for college. The tank was loaned to TFT for a while until the school got a bigger, better tank(clap) Now I just need to pay for textbooks(scary) 600$ (really 623.25$) is the cost of all my textbooks for this semester. So if you find yourself willing to get this good deal on a tank AND also give a student a little help, it would be very appreciated! New price is 375. LED unit not included! Here is the craigslist link: http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/for/3171769535.html Thank you, Marshall 9715334150
  9. Bump! I really need to get this sold! Call me, lets work out a deal! 9715334150 Marshall
  10. Well, I gotta go to college, and it isn't payin' for itself! So up for sale is my aquarium. Its a 180. It has more than I care to explain in just this message. But its more or less everything you could possibly need for a fine setup. If you are truly interested in the setup, give me a call at 971 533 4150. You may look at my build thread for details I am asking 700. Its an extremely good deal! UPDATE: HERE IS WHAT YOU GET: The tank will come with all livestock, Meaning tons of mushrooms, zoas, palys, a large colony of blastos, a giant chalice, a hollywood stunner chalice, and much much more. Also, about 250# of live rock. as for fish, there is a blue tang, a vlamingii tang, and a few clowns Additionally, you get a 20 gallon refugium (joined to the 25 gallon sump). In the sump is a heater and a large skimmer( reef octopus, good to 200 galons I think) Then of course, you get two 250 watt metal halides (I could consider throwing in a 400w as well if you would like) and reflectors, bulbs, ballasts Than, you get the tank, stand, hood on top of that. and also, a tons of freebie chemicals etc. So really, its a DARN good deal. Please give me a call, I need to get rid of this thing ASAP, and I would rather sell to you than to craigslist guys 971 5334150 Marshall
  11. I can understand why they might have fired him. Many universities will tolerate beliefs that do not fall into line with their own, Northwestern University even has a professor who publishes holocaust denial materials. However; considering that OSU wishes to be an authority on the subject of global warming, I can understand why they would want him out. Just as Brandeis University perhaps wouldn't tolerate an active holocaust denier.

    Do it man! DO IT!!!!
  13. I strongly suggest a Reef Dynamics. They are of solid built, and the owner of the company is extremely kind and helpful. SWC on the other hand imports skimmers... and has a very questionable record.
  14. I'll take the skimmer Thanks! PM sent
