Custom Coldwater Acrylic Build Thread
AquaticEngineer replied to AquaticEngineer's topic in Tank Threads
Kelp, I had thought about it, but the tank will be very dimly lit since all the animals I will be keeping are non-photosynthetic. I'm going to be light it with 2 high output LED spot lights, it should have some killer shadowing -
Custom Coldwater Acrylic Build Thread

Thats' exactly what I was thinking!! It would be light weight, its an inert material, I can put it in in sections if I need to, I can place a couple of them over my returns for the closed loop and drill some holes for exit points and eliminate any material building up inside of the tube, it will be an awesome place for development of small filter feeding creatures..... This will be awesome!!! -
Custom Coldwater Acrylic Build Thread

So I think I may have found my tank for my indoor display!! I'm going to check it out this weekend, it is a 48" x 24" x 48" tank, yeah thats right, 4 ft tall Its made out of 1.25 thick acrylic, I guess it needs some buffing but no biggy. I think the look I want for this tank is that of pylons like you'd find supporting a dock. Since it is so tall I could grow the anemones and such 360 degrees around the pylons. Couple questions for you all, Any suggestions on what to use for dock pylons? Think I could use real wood pylons? Should I make them out of fiberglass? Cast them in ceramic like pottery? Anyone know of a place that sells fake logs? -
SAAAAWEEET I will let you know when I have money for it, you wouldn't interested in a lobster tank in trade would you ? I just got my samples of the material I will be insulating the tank with today, I'm going to get the test tanks ready and make sure this stuff does what it claims. Supposedly a 1/4 of this material applied to any surface can prevent condensation and insulates better than 6 inches of foam.

I know these dont pop up very often but I wanted to get the word out. If anyone has, knows of, or comes across any acrylic tanks that are made with 3/4" or thicker acrylic please let me know. I know I could get one custom built brand new, but with baby number #2 just born I don't think its in the cards, so I'm looking for something used for a decent price that I can put some elbow grease into. To narrow it down a little, the ideal tank I am looking for would be no longer than 72" and no deeper than 26". Height does not matter, and have at least 3/4" or thicker acrylic on at least the front panel if not all sides. My neighbor up the street from me has the exact tank I need, but I dont think I can talk him out of it, lol. Please email me with what you have and what you want for it. I do possibly have an extra Marineland ML24BW 110 gallon lobster tank in excellent working condition for trade if interested.

After seeing this post I started poking around online and I found this: http://www.effled.com/50w-high-power-white-led-with-heat-sink-fan-p-114.html I have a request for a price quote in to them for a pair. All you would have to do is wire up the power sources for the light and the fan. Looks like its pretty much the retro fit version of the 50w cannons they put over the legoland tanks.

I'm testing out an idea for insulating coldwater tanks and I need 2 identical test cubes made out of 3/8 inch acrylic. Dont need to be big, but they need to be identical so I can perform the testing in the exact same conditions at the same time. I'm sure an acrylic shop can make em for me, but I thought maybe someone had some scrap 3/8 laying around they could cut and some free time on their hands to put these together? Maybe chat about fish tanks and have a few beers? I'm buying, you name the beer

Funny that you mention it, I was debating on contacting you about that 50 gallon you had for sale and doing this exact idea. Got vetoed by the (wife) (sad)

Lighting for 10 gallon... 70w MH pendant or 96w CFL?

When I had my dual 70w HQI retro setup I was buying bulbs for like $16 a pair shipped from ebay. The only spendy part a DIY retro 70w hqi setup is the ballast which is only like $40. -
Do seahorses and all NPS Corals and gorgonians. Build yourself a little auto feeder in a mini fridge and house it under the tank in the stand. Then you dont have to worry about hand feeding your seahorse and corals by hand 5 times a day. Just go buy a few bottles of Reef Nutrition foods and your good And you wont have to upgrade your light at all since all the corals would be non-photosynthetic. Do a google search for " Azoox " and it will bring up a lot of good info and some dedicated forums.

Petco Plant tank for sale on CL
AquaticEngineer replied to AquaticEngineer's topic in Classified Threads
I thought long and hard about this one, but I finally decided that even though it was super cool, it wasnt exactly what I wanted. Also the acrylic was only 3/8 thick so it wouldnt work for a coldwater tank -
Been browsing CL and found a cool tank for sale I'm sure you have all seen before. http://corvallis.craigslist.org/for/2193018829.html He's asking $500 I think, but I'm sure you could make an offer Its one of the staggered waterfall plant tanks they use at petsmart and petco. Made by Marineland for retailers. If I had some extra money for it I'd love to get it, but I'm all tied up in coldwater tanks at the moment.
