Collecting your own livestock in Oregon.
AquaticEngineer replied to AquaticEngineer's topic in D.I.Y
I think evap would be a problem, my lobster tank has lids on it and I have not had to add a drop of water due to evaporation in 6 months. -

Yeah it is totally legal to collect invertebrates there but only as long as its not done between May 1st and August 31st which is breeding season for local birds, and that only applies to Three Arch Rocks not Maxwell Point. It lists it all out on the ODFW Marine Regs, they are kinda like my bible now, lol From Page 104 under Special Regulations for This Zone: As for PH buffering, I dont have anything that lays down any calcium skeleton yet for corals. I do have several starfish and hermits, but I have about 60lbs or base rock that I used in the false bottom lower filtration area, and I feed my starfish snails so there is at any given time at least a 1/2 lb of empty snail shells in the tank. -

Yeah most of the rock on our coastline is solid granite, thats why the coldwater tanks cant really rely on bacterial waste breakdown like tropical reefs. There just isnt the same surface area available. -

So you were able to find brittle stars, and shrimp there??!! Those are two of the critters I am after for sure, Thanks for the tip I'm also hoping to find more medium sized rocks that have clams bored into them, the clams create some awesome holes in the rock and they are the coolest pieces I have in my tank by far. Turns the rock into almost a swiss cheese look after erosion has done its fair share, -

Let me know, I got that white one still for sale. There is a guy from Rainier who wants to come and check it out this week, and another guy in Seattle that is trying to talk me in to driving it up to him. I'll take lots of pictures when I'm there and of what we find -
Found some great photos of the place I'm going collecting this month using google maps and thought I'd share. I'll be looking for more anemones and different fish as well as other inverts like some more porcelain crabs. I may take home some urchins and starfish if I find some I haven't seen before. What I'm really hoping for is to find cup corals or other things that are usually only found below the tidal zone since there will be a -1.7 tide when I'm there. These pictures are of an area called Maxwell Point in Oceanside, OR. Just off shore are the large rock islands that make up the Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge.

110 Gal Marineland Commercial System, coldwater setup.
AquaticEngineer replied to AquaticEngineer's topic in Tank Threads
Very dimly lit tank, it only has a couple of waterproof LED setups angled from each end towards the middle and one of them went out the other day :( Nothing in the tank is photosynthetic so lighting is just for when I want to see whats in there -

Thought I would give you guys a picture update of my tank, all the starfish and the gorgonians in here I have had since November of last year. Most of the anemones and the Corynactis I've had since July of last year. Here's a couple pics of my orange Ochre Star eating snails from the market. Picture to show you the size of the Bat Stars and Ochre Stars, I got big hands too. My abalone with my finger in the shot for size reference. My slowly growing strawberry fields Gorgonians Anemones -

Just so everyone knows, it was used on a tank for about 3 months, so it has plenty of life left in it -

I thought I would mention this also in case anyone has the ability to plumb one of these lobster tanks into their existing system, but this tank would make for the most bad *** sump ever on a reef I'm essentially going to be running both of the lobster tanks I'm keeping as sumps for my display tank inside and using the dual chillers, dual filters, dual skimmers, and 220 gallons of water to my advantage in the garage. But for all you tropical reef keepers that worry about the temps of running halides over your tanks during the summer, imagine if you had 110 gallons of water sitting at a stable temperature in your garage with a 1/2 horse chiller hooked into it plumbed into your tank

My wife laughed when I asked her about buying the first tank, 6 tanks later she's not laughing anymore.....lol. If anyone is serioulsy wanting to get this tank and get it stocked, let me know, I'm taking a trip to Barview/Garibaldi on April 20th and there will be a -1.7 tide that morning. If anyone wants to tag along and split on gas hit me up

I'd only pay that if it was made of 1.25" acrylic.
